Quentin Jammer did a lot of things during his 11 years as a cornerback with the Chargers, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some new experiences left for him to try.
One of them is playing in the fourth preseason game of the year, something he never did with San Diego but something he’ll do when the Broncos face the Cardinals on Thursday night. Jammer isn’t just playing the cameo role reserved for key contributors, either. Jammer will be playing to prove to the Broncos that he deserves a job on the 53-man roster.
Jammer signed with Denver in May and the Broncos toyed with moving the veteran cornerback to safety, but the move didn’t work out as Jammer struggled to pick up the new position. Jammer’s now back at corner and Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports that he’s battling Omar Bolden to be the team’s 10th defensive back. It’s a big difference from where he was in San Diego, but Jammer says he’s fine with the change in circumstances.
“I’ve felt like I’m always on the bubble,” Jammer said. “I’m going to go out and work and continue to get better. It’s my second week back at corner. But I felt right at home when I got out there.”
Cutting Jammer wouldn’t cost the Broncos anything other than a $50,000 workout bonus and he’ll make $1.05 million more if they keep him on the roster. If the Broncos are worried about Champ Bailey’s availability for the start of the season, the veteran’s chances of sticking in Denver would seem to improve although his first-ever action in a preseason finale will loom large in a decision under any circumstances.
