Decision on Ed Reed’s availability for opener coming early next week

EdReed

One of the moves the Texans could make to get down to the 53-man limit is placing safety Ed Reed on the reserve PUP list, which would give him six weeks more to recover from his offseason hip surgery.

They don’t appear to be going that route, though. Mark Berman of FOX 26 in Houston reports that Texans coach Gary Kubiak said Friday that he expects Reed will go through drills at practice on Monday and Tuesday as part of the process of making a determination about whether or not he’ll play against the Chargers in Week One.

If Reed’s condition is such that the Texans think he has a chance of playing a week from Monday, it stands to reason that they won’t be making a roster move that guarantees he’ll miss at least five more beyond that. Reed may not be able to go from getting injections in his hip last week to playing in the opener, but if he’ll be able to play in Week Two or Three, the Texans will live without the roster spot until then.

Should Reed not be able to go in the opener, the Texans will go with rookie D.J. Swearinger, Danieal Manning and Shiloh Keo at safety.
