Rex Ryan: Jets have no timetable for picking a starting quarterback

Rex Ryan, Mark Sanchez AP

The Jets still haven’t chosen their Week One starting quarterback, and coach Rex Ryan doesn’t know when they will.

Ryan said today that there’s no schedule for picking either Mark Sanchez or Geno Smith, other than that the Jets will choose a quarterback when they think they’re ready to choose a quarterback.

“When we feel good about it we’ll make that decision and we’ll see. But certainly we haven’t put a timetable on it, as far as naming a starting quarterback, but when we feel good about the decision as an organization, then we’ll make that decision,” Ryan said.

It’s safe to say Ryan’s choice will come some time before the Jets kick off their season against the Buccaneers at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 8, but other than that there’s no way to know when the decision will be made.

However, if Sanchez (whom Ryan is still describing as “day to day”) needs more than another week to recover from his injured shoulder, that will make Smith the starter by default. Ryan may not have a day in mind when he’ll pick the starter, but if Sanchez isn’t healthy enough to go next Sunday, that will make Ryan’s decision for him.

They won’t have an answer to this question after Week 17 either. What a joke of a franchise.

If the jets want to EVEN think about going in the right direction they have to get rid of this clown ryan hes a good def. coordinator at best. Not a head coach the power goes to his head and also get rid of the GQ model sanchez and take the cap hit this franchise is a true circus they have surpassed the raiders as the worst franchise in the nfl for sure..

They should trade Sanchez,Geno, and who ever the back ups for a ham sandwhich and just run the wildcat all season long

I wouldn’t rule out a Matt Simms spot start. No, it isn’t just the preseason talking.

Take Tampa Bay, give the points, and you will be very wealthy.

  11. kingpel says: Aug 30, 2013 4:46 PM

And it appears the Jets are going to handle this QB situation as bad as humanly possible heading into the season. These guys can’t stay out of their own way.

  12. jc327 says: Aug 30, 2013 4:47 PM

This just in: the Jets will not have a starting Quarterback at all. They are fully switching to the single wing.

Not sure who’s gonna run that one either. Hmmm. Back to the drawing board…

  13. sandblastermoron says: Aug 30, 2013 4:55 PM

no sence rushing into things…not like the season starts anytime soon…..

What does Las Vegas have as the odds for the jets hosting the Super Bowl ?
    Might be worth a dollar.
Crazier things have been known to happen.

I would not worry about a time line either if all my choices were hot garbage wrapped in a uniform.

  17. 8man says: Aug 30, 2013 5:22 PM

It’s simply because they don’t know who should start. They just don’t know.

And if you were them, you wouldn’t know either.

  18. cttrojan says: Aug 30, 2013 5:42 PM

“we haven’t put a timetable on it, as far as naming a starting quarterback”

Of course yet, that would imply logic, organization and a sense of purpose.

  23. prmpft says: Aug 30, 2013 6:18 PM

  25. dlk47823 says: Aug 30, 2013 6:38 PM

The Jets know who the starting QB is, there’s no benefit to announcing it now. Only the trolls and the media NEED to know. They’re making TB game plan for them both. Its called being smart.
This team has a good defense and will be much better than you think. Also has a much improved Offensive line and pass rush as the Giants and Eagles found out.
    KEEP HATIN’!

Go ahead and take TB and GIVE points on the road. That’s smart, I think Tampa had 1 road win last year. Josh Freeman, now there’s a winning bet on the road.

I see the word “fl”….is there a team there?

By not naming Geno it totally confirms my suspicions: Geno can’t read defenses to save his life. He makes more passes to dbacks in practice then receivers and obviously will be a work in progress and not a starter.

  33. lagg1 says: Aug 30, 2013 7:46 PM

What does it matter that Ryan will not name a starter. The Jets are a mess. I never saw a team go backwards so quickly after two conference championship game appearances in the last 5 years. I am so glad that Ozzie Newsome and co selected John Harbaugh over Ryan.

  34. tradog36 says: Aug 30, 2013 9:01 PM

The Big Top Circus continues in New York. The Jets franchise is a total joke. I feel sympathy for there season ticket holders. It must be tough being a fan for this team. The “butt fumble”. Need I say more.

It doesn’t matter how bad the JESTs are on paper, somehow they always step up to play the Patriots. For all of his bluster and the silliness that haunts this franchise, Ryan will find a way to inspire them. It’ll be a game.

  36. getweird4u says: Aug 30, 2013 9:29 PM

Poor Jets fans , I really do feel for you. You need to clean house and Geno is not the answer either.

  37. Brinke says: Aug 30, 2013 9:33 PM

    read that sentence out loud.

“When we feel good about it we’ll make that decision and we’ll see. But certainly we haven’t put a timetable on it, as far as naming a starting quarterback, but when we feel good about the decision as an organization, then we’ll make that decision,” Ryan said.

Does any of that make sense? is this what they call ‘circular logic?’

  38. meandjuliojonesdownbytheschoolyard says: Aug 30, 2013 10:05 PM

As a Bucs fan I can’t decide who I want to start more, Sanchez or Smith? I have a feeling either way it might not be pretty for them.

  39. frostymugobeer says: Aug 30, 2013 11:25 PM

    Does it matter ?
they’re gonna suck either way so who really cares?

of coarse they could make a blockbuster trade for another teams back up qb….but I don’t think there is a player on the jets team any team would want at this point.

  40. rcali says: Aug 30, 2013 11:39 PM

That dude Matt Simms must be shaking his head. I’m guessing he doesn’t have great feet in the pocket.

  41. dlk47823 says: Aug 31, 2013 4:06 AM

Wow, the original butt fumble, that’s a good one…from now on, if you’re going to dog another team, tell us who your team is. you would think everyone’s team won the bowl last year, but we know 31 did not.

  42. dlk47823 says: Aug 31, 2013 4:09 AM

lagg1- You want to see a team go backwards quickly? The Ravens will take that mighty fall as well as any team has….Starts with an ass whipping in Denver this week.

  43. dlk47823 says: Aug 31, 2013 4:11 AM

The steeler consensus is that it’s going to be a long time until Pitt wins anything again. This is a bad offensive football team.

  44. dlk47823 says: Aug 31, 2013 4:14 AM

Guarantee Henry? just like the 2011 playoff game in NE vs the Mighty 14-2 Pats? They took a beat down from the Jets that day. Don’t guarantee anything when you’re not in the game Henry
You could grab me a beer, though..

  45. therealraider says: Aug 31, 2013 4:38 AM

The Fact that Mark Sanchez feels comfortable wearing a “head band” should be “off-putting” to any half-ass, semi-masculine fan of football.. Did I slip that one past the PC police?
