During training camp, the 49ers took a look at a lot of different quarterbacks but they wound up keeping a guy who they took in the seventh round of April’s draft over veterans Seneca Wallace and Scott Tolzien.
B.J. Daniels made the 53-man roster that the 49ers will take into the rest of Labor Day weekend, joining Colt McCoy on the depth chart behind Colin Kaepernick. He’s joined on the 53-man roster by Jon Baldwin, the wide receiver who disappointed in Kansas City after being a first-round pick in 2011 and who the 49ers acquired in a trade for their own disappointing 2012 first-round pick A.J. Jenkins.
The 49ers made that news public when they confirmed that Wallace and a slew of wide receivers -- Austin Collie, Lavelle Hawkins, Chad Hall, Chuck Jacobs and Kassim Osgood -- were among the players cut by the 49ers on Saturday. They cut 21 players in all, including longtime long snapper Brian Jennings, with tight end DeMarcus Dobbs going on the reserve/suspended list.
Several of the players cut by the 49ers were reported by other outlets over the course of the afternoon, and the additional seven cuts are tight end MarQueis Gray, running back Jewel Hampton, linebacker Joe Holland, cornerback Darryl Morris, guard Patrick Omameh, nose tackle Mike Purcell and tackle Kenny Wiggins.
