Jets cut Greg McElroy

Greg McElroy, who briefly excited Jets fans last year when he replaced a benched Mark Sanchez and threw a touchdown pass to beat the Cardinals, won’t be replacing Sanchez in any games this year.

McElroy has been released, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports.

Although McElroy played in Sanchez’s place in that Cardinals game and started one other game last season, he was never given an opportunity to compete with Sanchez and Geno Smith for the starting quarterback job this season. Instead, McElroy was competing with Matt Simms for the No. 3 quarterback job. Simms played well enough in the preseason to win that competition.

So we know Simms will be the Jets’ third-string quarterback. Now all we need to learn is whether Sanchez or Smith will be the first-string quarterback. Jets coach Rex Ryan says he has no timetable for that decision.

  1. Poor Matt so close to greatness just in the wrong locker room good luck kid you may be the starter before the season is over.

This has more football in his DNA then the other two do head to toe

  2. The writing was on the wall….3rd stringer injured throughout camp= waiver wire. just doesn’t have the size, strength to make it in the NFL. Congrats to Matt Simms!

  3. BigBlue- Worry about your own sorry ass team. Giants will miss playoffs for 4th out of 5 years, but they’ll still tell you about that Super Bowl!

  4. Steelerconsensus- Tell laundry to warm up, Ben will be hurt by week 6 behind the worst O line in football.

  5. Matt Simms was terrific for the Jets this preseason. Best arm in camp.

As for McElroy. Now what is Manish Mehta going to do for inside info. Mehta was stating that the Jets are idiots for cutting him. Greg is a good guy and worthy of a position with a football team because of his smarts but this is not a front line player. Matt earned the job.

With the majority of the league pairing down to just 2 QB’s per active roster. The Jets don’t need 4 even with Sanchez out for a few weeks. This puts Simms in position to be the Jets backup in weeks one and two if Geno gets hurt or struggles mightily.

If the jets the MOST qb desperate team in the league cut you YOUR CAREER IS OVER.

If you think the Jets have a worse QB situation than the Bills then you don’t know a thing about football.

  7. It annoys me as a Jets fan that management thinks they are smarter than everyone. Now that Sanchez is hurt and won’t play in Week One, everyone should believe that Smith was really the better option all along..right! Hard to say that with a straight face after his last start. Transparent clowns

  8. Actually Geno is a much better prospect than Manuel if you watched any college football the past 4 years.

  9. sonyguts-

im not going to lie i watch some college football not as much as the nfl BUT i know enough to know that put any decent qb with the jets coaches/front office and that horrible depleted roster and whoever the qb is worst off.

So you think starting an UDFA as QB for the first game is a better situation? Is that what you are saying? Seriously?

And it’s not like Manuel showed that he is a future franchise QB. He just looked far better than everyone else.

Did you even see him play or are you just parroting the collective wisdom of know-nothing beat reporters?

  11. Yeah I watched Geno he had 2 spectacular WRs who took short passes for long gainers. That helped pad his stats… Did you watch Smiths bowl game performance? I’m obviously biased but I think Manuel is a better prospect.
Not to mention Smith will be throwing to Holmes and Kerly and handing the ball to Chris Ivory. EJ has Spiller Fred and Stevie Chandler and Woods. I’d be willing to bet EJ has a better year then Smith.

    blah blah blah blah….

You got lucky with your QB situation again.

For years , the big highlight was to see the Carmen Miranda parade with Cher as the grand marshal.

    Cool your stilettos.

  13. @ kgun80

You appear to be a huge Bills fan. I admire your loyalty.

    I don’t admire your trashing/trolling.

Especially when Clinton was in the Oval Office when your team was in their last playoffs.

  14. sonyguts I did watch college football the last 4 years and geno is not better than Manuel…..he doesn’t even have the support of his college coach and teammates, and he has looked totally lost this preseason …..unlike Manuel.
