Panthers cut Jimmy Clausen

The Panthers are going to keep two quarterbacks this year, after getting rid of one who never had a real chance.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Panthers have released Jimmy Clausen, leaving Derek Anderson as the only backup to Cam Newton.

Clausen, the team’s second-rounder in 2010, fell into a ridiculous situation, and was never able to regain his footing. Drafted during the team’s awkward transition from old to young, while coach John Fox was on his way out the door, Clausen was chunked into the deep end, won one of his 10 starts, and then never attempted another pass once Newton was drafted.

He spent the last two years as the team’s inactive third, but new Panthers General Manager Dave Gettleman came from a Giants organization that was always comfortable keeping two, and without having drafted him, was under no obligation to hang onto a project gone wrong.

You’d think somebody would sign him. He’s never been given a real chance.

Notre Dame QB’s have been garbage since Joe Montana. I mean every single one of them. Mirer, Quinn, Clausen – all of them. Overrated college players playing for a supremely overrated college team.

    He stank.

I have to go with fordmandalay on this one. Clausen was not that good of a QB and as time went by, he proved he didn’t really belong in the NFL.

That’s my point. How do you know he sucks if he’s never been given a real chance?

He will be on an NFL roster this year.

ND & USC qb’s hardly ever pan out these days.

  11. sportsguy88 says: Aug 31, 2013 10:16 AM

He has had a chance in practice every single day.

I’m surprised he’s been in the league this long.

What do you mean he’s never had a chance? He’s had a chance every single day in practice!!

I’m surprised he’s lasted this long in the NFL.

Steve Beuerlein was a decent QB.

Clausen is in quite a pickle now.

Probably the last time I get to say that.

The Bills should get him. He is not as bad as advertised.

He’s literally still better than Sam “Badd for Rams” Bradford.

It is difficult to comprehend that Derek Anderson is a better backup QB than Tim Tebow. Of course, it is difficult to believe that Derek Anderson is a better QB than any one of a dozen unemployed guys right now, including Jimmy Clausen.

    Mel Kiper just threw up.

Clausen had a very slow release and wasn’t very mobile which was a bad combination behind the Panthers O line.
