Redskins get to 53, keep four quarterbacks

RedskinsQB AP

With question of whether Robert Griffin III has been cleared clearly unclear and Kirk Cousins dealing with a sprained foot, the Redskins have decided — for now — to keep four quarterbacks on the roster.

The Redskins have reduced to 53 players, and both Pat White and Rex Grossman have survived.

It doesn’t mean they’ll be on the roster for Week One, or even by tomorrow.  It only means that, as of right now, they both have jobs.

Those who don’t have jobs with the Redskins include the players who have been waived:  defensive lineman Chigbo Anunoby, receiver Dezmon Briscoe (waived-injured), linebacker Marvin Burdette, linebacker Will Compton, running back Tristan Davis (who had been on the exempt/left squad list), receiver Skye Dawson, safety DeJon Gomes, defensive end Dominique Hamilton, running back Jawan Jamison, receiver Lance Lewis, center Kevin Matthews, cornerback Chase Minnifield, tackle Xavier Nixon, tight end Emmanuel Ogbuehi, linebacker Vic So’oto, offensive lineman Tevita Stevens, and receiver Nick Williams.

Gomes had been a fifth-round pick in 2011.  Jamison was a seventh-round selection in 2013.

The Redskins also terminated three vested veterans:  defensive tackle Ron Brace, tackle Tony Pashos, and running back Keiland Williams (with an injury settlement).

what a stupd waste of roster space. Even though its a given IR3 goes down, there’s always back up qbs wanting employment.

And in the NFL, if you are counting on your backup to start, you are done anyway.

Four qb’s. They must feel real good about RG.

It makes sense to me that read-option in this league would change the approach to depth chart management. Thinking must be something like “If we keep 4 we should have 2 healthy at the end of the year.”

Really gonna cut chase minnifield over pat white? Really?!!!!

Pat white is trade bait. If he was waived he would have been signed already by someone who wants a read-option qb. Why not try to get something for him.

I’m sure they feel fine about RG3. Pat White had a decent preseason and they probably kept White so that they could trade him.

Smart decision.. The last thing you want is the eagles picking up white or grossman before they play us to start the season.. After that, the skins will only carry 3, bank on it.

garbage franchise, surprise surprise they dont know what they’re doing. 5-11 miss the playoffs, shanahan gets canned and kyle shananhan gets a coaching gig………….in the CFL

  9. mugsymagpie says: Aug 31, 2013 7:13 PM

Logicalvoicesays: they will all start and the Redskins are the smartest team.

    “… 5-11 ‘miss’ the playoffs…”
    ———————————————————————
The only division a team can have a losing record and still make the playoffs is NFC West.

I’m betting they trade Pat White to the Dolphins for a 2nd round pick.

You have 2 roster spots that are going to be taken back by Rob Jackson & Jarvis Jenkins in a few weeks… Keep Pat White, so no other team can use him for the playbook/gameplan prior to week 1… Then let him go. I don’t think he last more than 4 weeks.

  19. watermelon1 says: Sep 1, 2013 4:21 AM

Sad people thinking those lat few roster spots were really going to make a difference in the grand scheme of things right now.

Anyone they cut on those last few choices will most likely be available later in the year if they need to make changes.

And better talent will probably be available from cuts from other teams.

Personally I think the Redskins kept White around so the Eagles couldn’t bring him in for week one scouting

  21. baddegg says: Sep 1, 2013 7:00 AM

And…and….they never should have drafted Cousins 4th when they had RGIII…see I know so much more about football than Shanahan!

  22. bmore44 says: Sep 1, 2013 9:20 AM

    LOL

  23. kev86 says: Sep 1, 2013 10:27 AM

Keeping 4 qbs is dumb. Three is a reach.

  24. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Sep 3, 2013 4:29 AM

No way they keep 4 QBs for long.
