Report: Antoine Winfield won’t make Seahawks’ 53-man roster

AP

Antoine Winfield’s stay in Seattle will apparently be a short one.

Winfield, the cornerback who signed a free-agent contract with the Seahawks in April, won’t make the Seahawks’ 53-man roster, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS.

According to the report, there’s a chance the Seahawks could trade Winfield to one of the other teams that were interested in signing him this offseason (including Washington and Minnesota), but if a trade can’t get done, Winfield will be released.

Winfield is a three-time Pro Bowler who was a starter for the Vikings last season, but he’s also 36 years old, which is over the hill by the standards of NFL cornerbacks, and he was due to make $3 million this season. The Seahawks have apparently decided to go younger and cheaper for their secondary depth.

  1. If he is traded/picked up by MN its a resounding vote of no confidence in Robinson who got torched on 6 of 7 passes during one drive against SF. At least this way Winfield will play for $3 million instead of $7.2 million. Not sure if Winfield would have taken a $4.2 million pay cut to stay in MN, but he will now.

  2. Harvin and Winfield not playing week one. Vikings management looks brilliant. Check out Patterson who we got with that draft pick. You’ll understand better then why we got the better end of that trade and you got a talented headache.

you realize that Seattle has more depth at corner than any other team in the league right? Winfield not making the team is no indication of how good he is.

strangely enough, this makes me even more confident in how good the Legion of Boom is.

Legion on Boom…what a joke. You are all a group if pathetic turds. You know you’re a loser when you give yourself a name like that.

  5. @n001363….your brilliant Vikings management should have drafted a quarterback. Good luck with noodle arm.

  6. The Seahawks should be glad they are good at drafting (and the waiver wire)since their free agents signing record is horrendous.

  7. Patriots would be in the market for a solid CB opposite Talib, with the legal issues of Dennard hanging over his head. C’mon to New England and take a ride to the Super Bowl.

  8. I agree with bpeterson, Seattle is just plain loaded in the secondary. Winfield made some nice plays in the pre-season that show he’s still the same guy who had 100 tackles and 3 int’s last year.

Love the NFL, how teams like SF and Seattle can get a good coach, build through the draft and become a marquee franchise in a matter of a few years. NFL just needs to stop turning the league into the national touch football league.

  9. Winfield jumped to Seattle because he was too proud to take a pay cut from Minnesota. I would love to have him back but I’m worried he’s still too proud to come back. Spielman may be a magician with the way he fleeced the Seahawks, but he really blew it the way he handled releasing Winfield.

Yeah, nothing like sucking for a decade so you’re picking at the top of the draft continually. See if your sad sack NFC West teams can actually maintain a high caliber team instead of being a flash in the pan.

And then you look at the QB situation and inconsistency of the OC and realize it just evens its self out.

Possibly. But you still have Christian Ponder as QB, you’ll be lucky to have a winning season (let alone the playoffs and the SEAHAWKS will have a winning season and WILL be in the playoffs.

    Schneider > Spielman.

  13. Winfield had a decent preseason but Thurmond is playing great and is healthy for the first time. The Seahawks should be able to trade Winfield and there is definitely a place for him in the league.

When are people going to realize that there’s as much luck in drafting a franchise QB as there is identifying talent?

  15. I was really shocked seeing him in pre-season. He’s either all worn out or thought he could live on reputation because he didn’t hustle at all. He was beat on a couple plays and just generally sucked. The Seahawks have several guys who looked better and that’s what counts here. Last year or the last ten years mean nothing with Coach Carroll.

    =================

You spent the #12 pick in the draft on him. That is not “luck”. Tom Brady was luck. Your front office clearly misjudged the talent of Christian Ponder. When you spend that high of a pick on a QB, you are saying that he is YOUR GUY.

    Fail.

  17. Seattle is just that good. We have to let go key NFL quality people go but that’s what you get with a GM that actually knows what he is doing. You can Hate Seattle, Hate Pete but John Schnieder is a genius! Pete is a great NFL/Football coach turns out! laughing at your response already! Proof is in….
I think we should raise the rosters up to 90 players. That wouldn’t be fair for the rest of the league. Especially the Jets!!

  18. When reading some of these trolling Viking fan’s comments sometimes you just gotta laugh at their low football IQ, and stupidity. @NOO1363- I’m sorry, but how does the Vikings brass look “BRILLANT” when you offered Winfield twice as much money as we did? You lucked out because HE CHOSE to sign with us for less money because he wanted to play for an actual SB contender. As for Harvin, you spent the 22nd pick on him just a few years ago, and got the 25th pick, and some late rounders back in return for a guy who has done nothing but show his talent, and produce. Do the math, kid. Yeah, he is injured, but that happens in the NFL. I’m sure Patterson will miss games in his career. Not to mention, Patterson had like 85 yards, and 0 TD’s in the preseason, and he SKS at running a route tree. Good luck with that. Speaking of brilliant… How much did your front office pay John Carlson again? LOL!!! RICKYSPIELMAN- How was Winfield “TOO PROUD” to take a pay cut, when he took an even bigger pay cut chosing to sign with us? BTW, Spielman losing a proven playmaker in Harvin for a draft pick 3 spots worse than what you spent on him is considered him “FLEECING” the Hawks? HAHAHA! @JRAZZ- Yeah, what a bunch of terds, huh??? The best, and deepest secondary in the entire NFL, LOL. Too bad teams now study our defense, and draft big, physical CB’s all of a sudden, due to how much success the Hawks have had. Our 5th, and 6th CB’s are probably better than what you have starting for your team. Jeleous much? @7PONDER- You consider couting departments being able to identify talent at the QB position, luck? I guess I would too if my team LUCKED-OUT using a top 15 pick on a horrible QB, LMFAO!

  19. Tobis81, why would I be jealous of a perennial losing franchise that has never won anything significant in their entire pathetic history?

Not only that, you weren’t even division champs, let alone conference champions yet you run your mouths like you won the Super Bowl.

You’re a bitter turd who flaps his gums like the rest of the chumps in your fan base. You’re a bottom feeder and not even on the Rams level. Get lost scrub.

  20. Pete,Carroll is one of the biggest cheaters in the NFL. He sucked with the jets and pats, and was sent back to college. He broke soooo many rules at USC that they were banned for years from bowl games. He left that program in shambles, as he snuck out in the middle of the night and moved to seattle. His rah rah style will get old to the vets, and they will ignore him soon.

  21. The media are the ones talking up the Hawks this year, just like they did with your 49ers last year. You know, when you all “LOST” the SB. What??? It’s ok for them to talk you guys up, but not us because you won a few SB’s almost a quarter of a century ago? HAHA, please… Get a new line chump.

BTW, how am I the bitter one when you’re the pathetic loser TROLLING around on a Hawk’s article making yourself look like a moron? Yeah, that’s what I thought, smart guy, LOL… And did you really just call me a scrub? What are you some sort of TLC buff? LMFAO!!! Let me know if you want me to make you look like an idiot again, it’s always a pleasure.
