Ten rookies make Chiefs 53-man roster

Defensive end Austen Lane penned a thoughtful piece about being cut for earlier this summer and he can now write a sequel if he’s so inclined.

Lane was one of the players cut by the Chiefs on Saturday as they made their way to 53 players. Ten of the players who were kept by the Chiefs are rookies and 23 of the players are 24 or younger, signaling the start of what the team hopes will be a more successful era under General Manager John Dorsey and head coach Andy Reid.

The biggest name among those who failed to make the 53-man roster was tight end Tony Moeaki, who announced that he had been waived/injured before the team made the official announcement of their roster moves on Saturday afternoon. Guard Ricky Henry was also waived/injured and the Chiefs waived or released 20 other players.

In addition to Lane, they are: Tackle Steven Baker, wide receiver Josh Bellamy, safety Malcolm Bronson, safety Greg Castillo, cornerback Kennard Cox, defensive lineman Marcus Dixon, offensive lineman Tommie Draheim, linebacker Darin Drakeford, running back Shaun Draughn, wide receiver Frankie Hammond, tight end Demetrius Harris, defensive back Tysyn Hartman, linebacker Orie Lemon, cornerback Semaj Moody, fullback Toben Opurum, tackle Matt Reynolds, wide receiver Rico Richardson, guard Rokevious Watkins and linebacker Ridge Wilson.
