Vikings keep Joe Webb, for now

Webb AP

One of the biggest roster questions for the Vikings centered on the status of Joe Webb.  Drafted in 2010 as a receiver and quickly moved to quarterback, the Vikings decided after a disastrous playoff effort in place of injured starter Christian Ponder to move Webb to receiver.

Webb wasn’t a lock to make the 53-man roster.  For now, he has.

Whether he stays there remains to be seen.  With fullback Jerome Felton (three games) and offensive lineman DeMarcus Love (four games) suspended, roster spots will be needed when they return.

The cuts include tight end Colin Anderson, running back Joe Banyard, safety Brandan Bishop, guard Travis Bond, cornerback Brandon Burton, receiver Stephen Burton, defensive tackle Everett Dawkins, safety Darius Eubanks, cornerback Bobby Felder, tight end Chase Ford, tackle Brandon Keith, defensive tackle Anthony McCloud, linebacker Tyrone McKenzie, tackle Kevin Murphy, defensive tackle Spencer Nealy, defensive end D’Aundre Reed, receiver Rodney Smith, receiver Adam Thielen, and defensive end Collins Ukwu.

Bond was a seventh-round pick in 2013, Brandon Burton was a fifth-round pick in 2011, Stephen Burton was a seventh-round pick in 2011, Dawkins was a seventh-round pick in 2013, and Reed was a seventh-round pick in 2011.

Guard Seth Olsen was placed on injured reserve, receiver Greg Childs remains on the PUP list, and defensive tackle Christian Ballard is on the left squad list.

    He’s their best QB.

    He’s a keeper. Period.

Viking fans believed he’d be a good QB. They really don’t understand the NFL over there.

    Webb is better than Ponder.

  5. cherrybop says: Aug 31, 2013 7:34 PM

They converted him to a WR, right? He has talent and is athletic, but he’s definitely not cut out to be a NFL QB. Surprised Tebow hasn’t switched to playing TE as well.

Bond, Felder, Keith, Murphy, and Smith would be great to keep around on the practice squad. Felder is hurt so I don’t see anyone picking him up.

What do the Packers have to do about Webb ?
    OK
Since you started it. How many Super Bowls have the Vikings won in the past say 45 yrs ?
How many of their coaches scalp Super Bowl tickets

Actually, violets are purple. Just like the soon-to-be Super Bowl Champion Minnesota Vikings!

    Or maybe they’ll be 9-7.

Burton put his name on this list when he pull up on that slat and got Ponder intercepted. I called that cut right away.

Oh, boy. But, Ponder sucks. Rodney Smith looked better, hopefulyl he makes it to the practice squad..

That’s a shame about Felder, he showed great effort as a kick returner this preseason.

The Vikings will soon be announcing the addition of fresh-out-of-retirement Antoine Winfield!

Webb was drafted as a WR. His special teams play and athleticism got him to stay on the roster.

I don’t know if he will stay around given the fact 2 more guys will get cut by week 3.

I’m just glad they didn’t cut McCleod Bethel-Thompson in place of Webb at the QB3 spot.

Joe Webb played 3 games in 2011 at QB and showed promise. Great speed, rifle arm. The only playing time he got last year, despite Ponder choking, was against Green Bay and, with Musgrave making no adjustments, predictably had a rough game. In my opinion, he is similar to Kapernick, Wilson, Newton , and RG but with the Vikings being married to Ponder he will never have a chance. All Cassel has shown is that he is a downgrade from Ponder.

yes but sadly as good as he was on special teams he was equally horrible playing (or trying to) defense, beaten many times at cb on running plays

Gotta keep Joe Webb after the way he ripped up the Packers in the playoffs…..

Hopefully they clear waivers and get put on the practice squad. I don’t think Smith clears waivers though.

As a Vikings fan, with our sub par WR’s, I don’t see teams scalping our leftovers…
