Chris Kluwe says goodbye to the Raiders

Kluwe AP

Chris Kluwe, whose off-field advocacy has made him the NFL’s highest-profile punter, is no longer an NFL punter at all.

Kluwe wrote on Twitter on Sunday that Marquette King had beaten him out for the Raiders’ punting job.

“Thanks to everyone at the Raiders for the opportunity this preseason. It was a blast. Marquette King’s got a bright future with you guys!” Kluwe wrote. “Feel like we both had a pretty strong preseason. No regrets.”

Kluwe has become well known for his outspoken support of gay marriage, and for his appearances on talk shows and his memoir, Beautifully Unique Sparklepoines. There’s been some talk around the NFL that coaches think Kluwe is too focused on his off-field concerns and not focused enough on punting, but in the case of the preseason battle with King, it’s probably a simple matter of Kluwe losing his job to a player who’s younger and whose contract makes him cheaper. In that respect, Kluwe is no different from scores of other unemmployed football players today.

This is the stupidest comment I’ve ever read on PFT and that’s really saying something

I honestly thing Kluwe has a bit of an ego problem. Last year he was proclaiming himself the best punter in Vikings history, despite outkicking his coverage pretty regularly and having a mediocre season overall. Even if his statement that he was the best in Vikings history was true, that’s not the sort of attitude you want out of a player who has had an off year. You want someone who is focused on getting better rather than resting on their laurels.

In his defense, I don’t think he knows what most of those words mean.

Kluwe is just a narcissistic attention-seeker. The NFL kicked him off their stage.

I think the all unemployed list needs an update. Kluwe will find work eventually

  10. andyreidisabeachedwalrus says: Sep 1, 2013 3:52 PM

Good. Time for Kluwe to fade away. Ay least he’ll have more time to promote his book…

  11. natijim235 says: Sep 1, 2013 3:54 PM

too bad – he can move from SF and feel right at home in key west

  12. raiderapologist says: Sep 1, 2013 3:58 PM

The Browns are a bit light on punters at the moment.

  13. bballnut50 says: Sep 1, 2013 4:00 PM

No..not the best punter in Vikings history…thank God this big mouth is gone…

  14. jaymac515 says: Sep 1, 2013 4:06 PM

Kluwe is a class act, but it makes a ton of sense to go with King – after all, the Raiders will be punting a freaking lot this season, so a young and fresh leg will be valuable…

He probably IS the best punter in Vikings history! That makes him honest, not egotistic

…and if Peterson proclaimed himself the best RB in Viking history no one would bat an eye…

…its all relative to the position.

  16. commonsensedude says: Sep 1, 2013 4:16 PM

I don’t agree with his politics but wish him well and hope he gets another shot.

(Trying to show more class than the Tebow haters, who seem genetically compelled to bash him at every single opportunity.)

  17. tariencole says: Sep 1, 2013 4:16 PM

    wringworm,

Greg Coleman was better than him any day. Kluwe was never better than NFL average.

  18. gibbyfan says: Sep 1, 2013 4:21 PM

hope Tebow and Kluew both wind up on the same team…….they can add their phlosophical debates as color for the season

  19. open1337 says: Sep 1, 2013 4:46 PM

    Good luck. CONGRATS KING!

  20. purplengold says: Sep 1, 2013 4:47 PM

What happened to his band in Minneapolis? New bass player? Or back to the studio with Chris?

I have a dream. I dream of a day where people keep there personal opinions to themselves and stop trying to convert others. Whether religious, political, or otherwise. Let us have FOOTBALL!

  22. prmpft says: Sep 1, 2013 5:01 PM

hopefully it is goodbye to ALL of us.

  23. mclovin07 says: Sep 1, 2013 5:20 PM

Let’s hope we never hear from this dude again…

  24. elliottcovert says: Sep 1, 2013 5:20 PM

    @wringworm

My point was about his attitude rather than his ranking among Vikings all time punters. I stressed that even if his statements are true, they display an unhealthy attitude for a professional athlete. As a coach, you want players who will focus on improving their craft going forward rather than resting on their historical status. His place in the history books doesn’t mean anything for this or future seasons.

I also want to answer your point regarding AD. AD is undeniably the best running back in Vikings history, while Kluwe’s status is debatable. AD, furthermore, isn’t resting on his accomplishments thus far, and all season long he has been talking about accomplishing bigger and better (sometimes impossible) things going forward. That’s an attitude a coach can work with. So I think that comparison is weak.

  25. scottieplongballs says: Sep 1, 2013 5:27 PM

If someone sneezed he would kick it off the side of his foot. He became a joke and no team wanted an “idiot kicker” to take attention from the team focus. If he doesn’t see that, then thats on him.

  26. goawayeverybody says: Sep 1, 2013 5:44 PM

I have a dream as well. It is where people who share their opinions aren’t automatically assumed to be trying to “convert” anyone. They’re just sharing opinions they are passionate about, whether it be Tebow or Kluwe or anyone.

  27. zeddicuszorander says: Sep 1, 2013 5:50 PM

    I agree with the clown.

  28. burtreynoldstoupee says: Sep 1, 2013 6:01 PM

For the record, Greg Coleman was easily the best punter in Viking history – no contest. He’s a member of the 40th anniversary team and his nickname was “Coffin Corner” because no one before or since consistently nailed punts inside the 10 like he did. Aside from that, defenses had to always guard against his ability to take off and run with the ball because of his speed. Kluwe fits somewhere with Newsome, Berger, Clabo, Bob Lee, but IS probably rated as having the largest ego of any Viking punter in history.

  29. duff23 says: Sep 1, 2013 6:06 PM

I hope Oakland can handle the media storm that the Vikes endured

  30. nflpoker says: Sep 1, 2013 7:51 PM

I guess the Vikings made the right decision getting rid of him. If you get cut by the Raiders, then that doesn’t reflect very well on you, does it?

  31. boogiedownmusic says: Sep 1, 2013 9:05 PM

Start McGloin ! May be the best QB on the team. The kid has a stronger arm than Flynn and is just as mobile as Pryor. Why not ? We aren’t going to the playoffs anyways.

  32. squared80 says: Sep 1, 2013 10:53 PM

I like Kluwe, but this is just further proof that the Vikings were right to cut him. He was making a lot of money for an average to below average kicker.

  35. cantstanzi25 says: Sep 2, 2013 4:12 AM

Kluwe is a cool guy .theres to many haters who do nothing but bash good people..so what if you disagree with him about his topics or that hes the best punter in vikings history..i dont follow the vikings but i know Coleman was very average as a punter..so if that was the best b4 Kluwe got there then yea Kluwe was the best punter there and its not even close

  36. djred34 says: Sep 2, 2013 10:46 AM

Marquette king bout to do work! He has a strong leg and should be around for a while with the Raiders

  37. thenordicthunder says: Sep 2, 2013 2:56 PM

Good. If his “foot” was as big as his mouth he’d actually be a great punter. But he’s just below average, which is why the Vikes punted his sorry ass to the curb!
