Patriots make waiver claims on offensive and defensive lines

A pair of players cut by the Dolphins on their way to 53 players won’t be leaving the AFC East.

Defensive tackle A.J. Francis tweeted that he was claimed off waivers by the Patriots on Sunday. Francis was an undrafted free agent who signed with the Dolphins during the offseason and obviously caught the eye of someone with the Patriots before getting dropped by Miami.

Chris Murray of the Reno Gazette-Journal reports that New England has also claimed guard Chris Barker, who went to the University of Nevada. He joins tight end Zach Sudfeld as former members of the Wolf Pack to land on the Patriots’ 53-man roster.

Barker will be joined in offensive line meetings by center Braxston Cave, who failed to make the Browns as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame and announced on Twitter that he was heading to New England. Cave gives the Patriots a backup for starting center Ryan Wendell other than Dan Connolly, who is slated to start at right guard this season.

Any corresponding moves haven’t been announced, but Shalise Manza Young of the Boston Globe reports offensive lineman Will Svitek, cornerback Marquice Cole and running back Leon Washington were not spotted at Sunday’s practice.

The Pats had two open roster spots(51) after cut downs. Only one player has to go(so far). Connelly plays RG, Mankins plays LG.

The Pats already had two spots open so if three other players are being released then they may be making other moves; not a suprise with Belichick as he makes personnel moves almost every week (to his and his minions credit).
