After Thursday’s preseason finale, Raiders coach Dennis Allen said he knows the name of his starting quarterback. But Allen declined to share it with the media.
On Monday, Allen declined again.
“I’m sure all of you have your questions on who the starting quarterback is going to be and what we’re going to do there,” Allen said, via Scott Bair of CSNBayArea.com. “I’m really not going to get into that for competitive reasons. We’ve got a plan. Unless we start out in the wildcat, we’re going to have a quarterback out there on the first snap of game, so we’ll just leave it at that.”
That’s Allen’s prerogative, but it’s unrealistic. Once practice commences on Wednesday in advance of the season opener against the Colts, either Matt Flynn or Terrelle Pryor will get the bulk of the practice reps with the first team. And one of the 53 players (and/or eight members of the practice squad) will blab.
Maybe Flynn and Pryor will split the reps, which would be a possible clue that Allen plans to use them both.
Regardless, we’ll all know more on Wednesday -- whether Allen wants us to or not.
UPDATE 10:47 p.m. ET: Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Pryor will start.
