Jets sign Brady Quinn, cut Graham Harrell

The Jets are adding another quarterback to the mix.

Brady Quinn, who was cut by the Seahawks on Monday, will sign with the Jets today. Quinn has previously played for the Browns, Broncos and Chiefs. The Jets have also announced that they are releasing backup quarterback Graham Harrell, who lasted less than a week with the team.

The Jets still haven’t named their starting quarterback after a lengthy competition between Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez, but the shoulder injury suffered by Sanchez in the preseason likely makes Smith the favorite to start for the Jets when they open the season on Sunday.

(Side note: Isn’t it fun that we’re now talking about real, live NFL games that will be happening on Sunday?)

The Jets already had a crowded quarterback situation, and they’ve praised the work of backup quarterback Matt Simms. But they apparently thought they needed even more help at the position, and Quinn has found a new home.

Maybe the plan is to start a different quarterback every week for 16 weeks…

Or maybe Sanchez is seriously hurt…

    Poor Brady Quinn!

The Jets have just signed Ray Finkle and are looking forward to playing the Super Bowl in their home stadium in Feb. At least they never cease to entertain us…

Very dumb move, get a qb who cant win anywhere.

Vince Young can at least win.

Vince Young is even more accurate than BQ who is not accurate.

Really goes to prove that Green Bay didn’t have any plan for a backup QB. Is it a money issue in GB or bad management? The smart money says management.

  11. ttommytom says: Sep 2, 2013 1:02 PM

Sanchez must be going to IR. Something has to give.

No way Simms to the practice squad as he impressed enough to get picked up.

If the Jets release Simms, then I will laugh at their utter incompetence…

“Hey, that guy who couldn’t make the 2-14 Chiefs is available…”

It was either this thought process, or “Hey, that guy that couldn’t hold a starting job in Denver over the guy we got rid of this offseason is available.” Either way, welcome to the circus, Brady. Means Sanchez will not be available this week and Jets want to carry 3 QB’s versus the Bucs.

  21. bordner says: Sep 2, 2013 1:20 PM

I’m surprised Harrell was signed in the first place. Quinn isn’t very good, but definitely an upgrade over Harrell.

  34. dlk47823 says: Sep 2, 2013 1:47 PM

He’s the 4th QB on the roster, an emergency signing until Sanchez is healthy. Glad to see all you fans of other teams continue to be so interested…..You just can’t get enough of those Jets, can you?

  35. harry1941 says: Sep 2, 2013 1:49 PM

If you que up Yakkity Saks it makes the Jets more bearable. The only question now is will it be the Raiders or the Jets with the first pick of the 2014 draft.

  42. mrlaloosh says: Sep 2, 2013 2:14 PM

I hear the Jets asked 64 year old Archie Manning to try out. Dan Marino? How about JOE NAMATH!

  43. cball77 says: Sep 2, 2013 2:28 PM

Not saying Quinn is a good NFL QB, but he actually had a decent pre-season in Seattle. I think he’s actually the best QB on the Jets roster which is kind of sad.

  44. mclovin07 says: Sep 2, 2013 2:39 PM

As bad as Ponder is, watching the Jet’s saga at QB make’s me feel not quite as awful as I do….key word: “not quite”….but close.

  46. brenenostler says: Sep 2, 2013 2:45 PM

Brady Quinn is trapped. The only chance he’s had is on two crappy teams. No he’s not Peyton. He’s not gonna turn a team around, but if he’s given a solid team, he’ll probably take them to the playoffs. But at this point, only crappy teams are gonna give him that chance.

  47. spedman24 says: Sep 2, 2013 2:55 PM

The only team with worse backup QBs than the Jets is the giants…wow. Would love to see Eli get concussed in week 1…bring in the painter or the worst QB in the 2013 NFL DRAFT. By week 4 Sanchez will be out of NY & Matt Simms will be dominating the league, can’t wait.

  48. dubblelznhell says: Sep 2, 2013 3:03 PM

  49. afcdomination says: Sep 2, 2013 3:17 PM

brady Quinn was somehow worse than matt cassel. I actually felt that cassel gave KC more of a chance to win. Quinn helped KC get to 2-14 and do the impossible with that many good players.

sounds like the jets are prepared to tank the season if geno falters. we all know mr headband won’t be turning anything around. Quinn is just another qb to bring in who will screw things up

  50. bleedrangerblue says: Sep 2, 2013 3:24 PM

It’s obvious people. Sanchez is hurt more than they are telling us. And I’m glad…

  51. pacodawg says: Sep 2, 2013 3:42 PM

    Brady Quinn? Really? Cleveland fans

  52. watermelon1 says: Sep 2, 2013 3:43 PM

How can you let Sanchez have as many chances as he has had… And sign people like Brady Quinn….

…but not give Tebow an actual shot?

Sorry, I know many hate heading about Tebow but I think we can all agree he’s better than those other two guys.

  53. tolan04 says: Sep 2, 2013 3:47 PM

  54. metalhead65 says: Sep 2, 2013 4:04 PM

  64. FinFan68 says: Sep 2, 2013 6:48 PM

  67. mlander12 says: Sep 2, 2013 8:39 PM

This is probably the best move the jets have made this year. I watched all of Brady’s preseason in Seattle and he was pretty good and easily could have backed up Wilson, but TJ was just outstanding and he’s well liked in Seattle.

What do teams honestly see in this guy?

Teams see a guy that is an intelligent player. He is able to understand a playbook and play every bit was well getting no practice reps as he would getting all of them. So, when you have a rookie QB, an incumbent QB that is still playing like a rookie, and a developmental guy on the roster, injuries sprinkled throughout, no one playing at the skill positions and an offensive line that is suspect, you want a guy like that.

He might have a pretty low ceiling, but he’s also got a pretty high floor. What are you expecting from your third string QB?
