Jim Leonhard taking physical with Bills, expected to sign

Jairus Byrd is dealing with plantar fasciitis, which would leave the Bills short at safety in the event that he’s not able to play in the early weeks of the season.

As a way to deal with that possibility, the Bills are expected to sign veteran Jim Leonhard. Coach Doug Marrone said Monday that Leonhard was taking a physical with the team and that he’ll be added to the roster if he passes.

Leonhard could be in line for a fair amount of playing time even if Byrd is good to go because he has spent time with defensive coordinator Mike Pettine when he was on the Ravens and Jets. Marrone mentioned his familiarity with the system, which will allow Leonhard to hit the ground running after spending training camp trying to make the Saints.

The Bills currently have space on their 53-man roster, so they would not need to cut a player in order to add Leonhard to the mix at safety with Byrd, Da’Norris Searcy, Aaron Williams, Duke Williams and Jonathan Meeks.

Great player while he was in Buffalo, great player for the Jets. I am looking forward to this signing.

Wow! A guy that couldn’t make the worst defense in NFL history. Good idea Maronne.

An average player with the Bills, he was better with the Ravens. Veteran might help a young team

If anyone thinks the Saints have the worst D in NFL history, you haven’t been watching the Saints. Or the Oakland Raiders, really.

This guy is a terrible football player, good luck Buffalo.

Apparently, you haven’t been watching. The Raiders defense ended the 2012 year ranked #18.

I’ve always liked Leonard. Doesn’t have the measurables, but does have the heart and smarts to play and be valuable.

I remember that Jets-pats game where Jim Leonhard being out made all the difference in 45-3. LOL

Why so many negative comments about Leonhard? He plays his heart out on the football field. He did it in Buffalo, Baltimore and in New York, and he’ll do it again for the Bills. Also having Pettine in his corner will only help Leonhard in his time here, which is a big plus for him and the team. Having a few players on the team that already know the Defensive Coordinator’s system has to make learning it much easier all around. Good pickup Marrone!

    A slow, white 5′ 8″ safety?

I liked this guy when he was with the Ravens. Not so much as a Jet.

Happy to hear hes coming home, I hope he stays.
