Packers sign Seneca Wallace to back up Aaron Rodgers

AP

When the Packers cut B.J. Coleman, the only backup quarterback on their 53-man roster, we wondered who Aaron Rodgers’ backup would be. It didn’t take long to find out the answer: Seneca Wallace.

Wallace signed with the Packers today, Ed Werder of ESPN reports.

As the Packers prepare for their Week One meeting with the 49ers, they now have two quarterbacks who can run the 49ers’ offense to help their defense prepare: Both Wallace and Scott Tolzien, who’s on the Packers’ practice squad, were with the 49ers until last week.

Wallace left the 49ers under strange circumstances, with an initial report that he was retiring quickly refuted by Wallace himself. Wallace said that he believes the only reason the 49ers signed him was that they wanted to use his presence as leverage to squeeze backup quarterback Colt McCoy into accepting a pay cut.

If Wallace has any hard feelings toward the 49ers for that, he can get his revenge by giving the Packers all the intelligence he can provide before Sunday’s game.

  1. And what happens if/when Aaron gets knocked out of the game? Senneca will only be able to run a few plays this week if needed. In Ted We Trust? I’m going to question this. Wonder if we can get Flynn from Oakland…

  2. Thought they’d keep VY, hoped they wouldn’t keep graham/Coleman. Might take him awhile to learn the offense, but I hope he can give us some good intel for Sunday.

  3. LOL@ signing Seneca Wallace. if Packers really wanted interl, Tolzein signing made more sense. He was been there for 2 years and understand the offense like a coach.

Not sure why if he is even better than Vince Young!!

  4. Ted drafted him when he was in Seattle and he’ll probably have some familiarity with Packers’ O language because he played for Holmgren. Fun fact: Seneca Wallace’s career PR is about the same as what all 3 non-GB NFCN QBs delivered last season.

  5. Sweaty Teddy needs to lay off the sauce when making some of his decisions….Seneca Wallace is a joke and a parasite!

  6. VERY poor planning… Why get rid of EVERY backup player the week before your first regular season game (Coleman, Harrel, Young) ? I don’t understand why they wouldn’t hang on to at least one of those guys just in case Rodgers get hurt.

  7. Stating the obvious:

Packer fans need to pray regularly. With Rodgers behind that porous offensive line, and two 49er rejects backing him up, well . . . .

  8. Cue the biqueen fans comments saying how the Packers are going to suck… But in all seriousness why cut Vince Young and BJ Coleman who know the offense and sign Seneca Wallace who knows absolutely nothing about the Packers playbook, at least Vince Young had 3 weeks in the offense…scratching my head on this one. Lets hope Seneca is carrying a grudge against the 49ers and can help the Packers D prepare for week 1

  9. I like it for 2 reasons,
1st, lets get all the info possible for week 1 @ SF.
2nd, If Aaron had to come out of a game, I want a QB that offers a duel threat of pass and run.

  10. Wallace was with the Niners for like five minutes. What kind of intel can he provide? “The carpeting in the team’s training center is red.”?

  11. ….what a bunch o’ BS…….the packers are resorting to crap that minnesota pulls…..ridiculous…..just play hard-nose, smash-mouth packer football….and don’t worry about some other team’s methods……

  12. Haha, loving all this commentary OVER A BACKUP QUARTERBACK! HAHA.

Meanwhile the team a couple hundred miles to the West has a starting quarterback that plays like a backup.

Still dwunk? That hard nose,smash-mouth ball you dream about is the Vikings game. We beat up the 49ers last year…too bad your Packers don’t have the men to pull that off, you’re soft…

Nice comment bro. Biqueen? At least there’s more to do there than hibernate all year waiting for the Packers and shooting stop signs.

  15. So-o-o-o-o you cut all backup QBs who have a clue as to what the GB offense is all about and bring in a loser to backup Rogers???? Teddy bear Thompson better hope Rogers doesn’t get hurt or he’ll be the first one to be strung up and flogged.
This makes no sense, especially when you cut Vince Young with at least three weeks worth of knowledge for another has been with no weeks of offensive knowledge.

  16. Wallace > Ponder.

    Not close.

Also, Viking fans worried about the Packers going 0-1 should realize that the Vikes are probably going to be 1-3 going into the bye, and 4-8 after the bye.

Why? Because they overachieved last year.

  17. Shaun Hill & Kellen Moore (Detroit). Josh McCown (Bears). Matt Cassel & McLeod Bethel-Thompson (Vikings)…..Not any better than Seneca Wallace & Scott Tolzien… I have no problem with Packers back-up QB’s.. They are back-ups, they are there to do a serviceable job when needed….. Cutler & Stafford are really good QB’s and would start for 80% of the teams, while Ponder would start for 5%. He’s more of a back-up than a starter.

  18. This was merly a plot to get inside information from him to try and take down the mighty 49ers…period! They’ll dump him after the game…watch! lmao #usinghimlikahoe

  19. Seneca Wallace felt “used” that he was signed by the 49ers to leverage McCoy to take a smaller deal, and now he signs with the Packers, who, among other factors, most likely wants to “use” him for his knowledge of the 49ers’ playbook. Anyone else see the hypocrisy here?

  20. The Pack can obviously win with Rodgers. If Aaron goes own, they could have won with Vince Young and Graham Harrell. Coleman was marginal at best but settling for Seneca Wallace is a total mystery. It is obvious that Thompson and McCarthy saw something that Seattle and San Fran couldn’t discover. Maybe its because Wallace works cheap ~ ~ $820-thousand is not a cap breaker, is it? Cheeseheads had better keep Rodgers in their prayers for clearly if he goes, its gonna be a long fall, y’all.

  21. Enough with the “If Rodgers went down the Packers are screwed” ya no sh**, the same can be said for probably more than half the teams in the NFL.

  22. It seems pretty clear that VY had trouble with the offense…hence the GM’s comments they should have gotten him into the system sooner….whether Wallace lasts past the Niners game remains ot be seen, but I have seen much worse play from QB position than Seneca Wallace provides….

    Your logic is lacking “logic”…

Packers, Bears and Lions can win with their starting QB… Neither team can win with their backup. They don’t have a running game, and only the bears have a good d…

The Vikings have been playing the last two years with a backup starting. And they won last year with a backup as their starting qb. Take the Vikings “starter” out, and they might even be better!

  24. All you need to know about Senaca Wallace is that he was beaten out by a rookie Tulane QB in New Orleans.
In week one, Joe Camel will destroy the Green Bay Packers.

  25. hdburcham says: Sep 2, 2013 11:39 AM

Tim Tebow should have went there before Wallace!!! At least he’s won a playoff game and played well under pressure when it counted!!
    ————————————————————-

So is that why he is in nomans land right now? No pressure in the preseason to perform?

Tebow crumbled with or without pressure. 2 coaches in this league that have a proven track record of making a qb… belichick, and McCarthy.. Tebow had a chance in new England, and had some time with brady, and he still couldn’t land a job there. He is forever going to be a motivational speaker for the rest of his life. Football is over for him.

Ha Ha Ha.. Us cheeseheads keeping Rodgers in our prayers?? ( being Sarcastic)… Y’all keep believing that, while us CHEESEHEADS know that if any star player for any team goes down, including QB, will have a long fall…
Brady goes down in NE? doesn’t look good. Manning goes down in Denver? doesn’t look good. Brees in NO. Pederson in MN. Flacco in Balt. Big Ben in Pitts. Manning in NY. Cutler in Chicago…. We can keep going on!! Every fan is prayer there star player doesn’t go down..

Really? Ok, you keep believing that. While all the rest of us will watch the Vikings go 7-9.. With a back-up QB

  28. Aaron Rodgers took 51 sacks last year and yet Graham Harrell only threw 4 passes as the backup. Also, Rodgers’ two concussions were not caused by sacks. One happened against the Lions on a QB scramble. The other came against the Redskins on an illegal helmet-to-helmet hit that wasn’t called. Rodgers is not “likely” to get hurt this year.

I agree. It sounds to me like the 9er fans are scared to death and willing to jump on anything to try to convince themselves they’ve got a chance this weekend. As for the viking fan comments, they’re too delusional to be scared. They’ve been predicting a championship for how many years now?

I also agree on that whole “Packer fans better hope that Rodgers doesn’t go down…” crap. Can you morons think of anything more stupid to say? We’ve always hoped that Rodgers doesn’t go down. When you have a great player like that (and the one before him), you always want them playing. I can’t imagine a time when you would ever hope that your starting QB DOES go down.

  30. truth is Thompson made a mistake and a mess of things with the backup qb situation….he admitted so. McCarthy has to take some blame as well and he is supposed to be some kind of “QB Whisperer”.

the firm of Harrell, Coleman & Young are absolutely horrible and if Rodgers did go down, would have NO chance at competing.

not sure Wallace is the answer, but may be a stop gap until some of these other teams holding 3 and 4 qb’s start dumping.

    In Ted We Trust!!!!!!!

  31. Louhudson has it correct. Any one who knows V Youngs history will realize that S. Wallace will learn more of the Packers playbook in one weak than Young would learn in a season. That was one of his problems with the Titans. In his first season the ran a very limited playbook and he was good until the defenses recognized that fact. He is not the sharpest tool in the shedd when it comes to memorizing playbooks. It actually takes him more than a season.

  32. I wonder if Viking fans realize that their version of Aaron Rodgers is AP? If AP goes down the Vikes are not going to win many games without him just like GB would not win many games with Seneca Wallace. As for the 49er fans, I seriously doubt Wallace was brought in for intellegence on the 49ers playbook because that is Tolziens job but he is probably going to give them read option looks in preperation for Kaep and RGIII

  33. All VY did in the pre-season was dump the ball to the outlet receiver. He averaged about 6-7 yards a completion. Yet most of the idiots on this board thought he was going to make the team. The guy is fighting for his football life and He never bothered to learn the playbook. That says a lot about his character.

  34. Week 2 is coming very fast packer fans. I bet all you Clowns wish you team was like the Redskins when it comes to back up QBs. The Redskins can put any QB after RGIII and still Dominate all 31 teams in this league. So Ha Ha and LOL and LMAO to all you Losers out there.!!!!!!!!

  35. The hypocrisy is strong this year. Packer trolls on Vikes stories saying they are waiting for the Packers to make cuts to sign their trash and here we have the Packers doing that with other teams and Pack fans calling it brilliant.

  36. Pack should have gone after Quinn. He was one of the only backups that looked good in the preseason, and only reason Seattle moved on was Jackson.

Odd Pack would go with Wallace if Young was up to speed in the offense. If we are comparing “past” talent, Young was much better than Wallace ever was – yet, Wallace was more consistent at being average. I don’t think any team ever “planned” for Wallace to be a starter.

  37. afcdomination says: Sep 2, 2013 3:18 PM

so the packers are quoted saying if they had given vince young more time……

and then they cut vince and sign Seneca Wallace?

    confused.

    ——————-

let me help you out…..if the Packers would have picked him up in April, he may have had time to catch on to the offense.

the key word is MAY….I don’t really think his football IQ is nearly high enough even if he started in April.

  38. I’m sure a lot of you SF fans are very overconfident in your teams’ chances against the Packers, but I can assure you the team fears Green Bay and their weapons.

Packers are loaded on offense once again and their defense is greatly improved.

Niners are slightly favored and rightly so…they have a very stout defense, but are limited on offense with their injuries. This will be a battle….I have the Packers winning 27-24

  39. first tolzien, now seneca wallace ? lol packers are scared after last years playoff embarrassment.

    49ers will win week1 34-20

We know what the pukes are: VULNERABLE!!!!

A bad Oline just won’t get Erin hurt, it could mame him. Who will be pissed then and wanting TT’s head on a platter for this MAJOR oversight????
    Dude is toast…….

If you think 51 sacks was bad last year, this year, you will be pushing 70…….

  47. Lacey’s a bust, the O-Line is down, the defense is old and Rodgers got his contract, sad times in smallville. Time for the NFL to relocate the Packers to a real metropolitan city that has a large football fan base like LA

  48. And…….the only reason the Packers signed him was to get the info he had on the 49ers! Poor Wallace is getting used left and right! He should have just retired! lol BTW he isn’t a good QB!
