Patriots expected to add Matthew Mulligan

Matthew Mulligan AP

Rob Gronkowski might be back on the practice field, but the Patriots still needed some tight end cover.

According to Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald, the Patriots are expected to sign former Packers tight end Matthew Mulligan.

If Gronkowski isn’t sufficiently recovered from back surgery to play in the opener, the Patriots will be down to Michael Hoomanawanui and rookie Zach Sudfeld at the position.

Mulligan has also spent time with the Rams, Jets, Titans and Dolphins. While not much of a receiving threat (14 receptions in four seasons, eight of them last year with the Rams), he is a solid blocker, and they could use some depth there.

Good. The more lousy players they add, the better.

When you swing and miss like they did with Hernandez, sometimes you have to take a Mulligan.

Very nicely punned. You should have done something about biting the bullet or taking a shot for Hernandez, might have capped it off perfectly.

Mulligan played pretty well for the Rams last year. I wasn’t surprised when the Rams didn’t retain him, because they already have Jared Cook and Lance Kendricks, but I was thinking that Mulligan is NFL-caliber, and he would probably end up on someone’s roster (after the Packers.)

With Gronkowski’s back and Hernadez’ woes with johnny law, Pats are taking, wait for it … a Mulligan

Actually it wasn’t a swing and a miss so much as a landing out of bounds. Either way, it was an unplayable lie.

Good one, though. Made me laugh.

Looking for a good blocker to help keep Tom upright after what happened in the lions game.

Why wouldn’t they just keep Fells or Ballard? Both of them have been with the program for a while. I can’t fathom that with the lack of knowledge of the offense that Mulligan is a significant upgrade. I think across the league these teams are moving bodies for the sake of moving bodies.

Local boy coming home. He is from Bangor, Maine. I am a Pack fan from Maine and was hoping they’d keep him.
