Rob Gronkowski might be back on the practice field, but the Patriots still needed some tight end cover.

According to Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald, the Patriots are expected to sign former Packers tight end Matthew Mulligan.

If Gronkowski isn’t sufficiently recovered from back surgery to play in the opener, the Patriots will be down to Michael Hoomanawanui and rookie Zach Sudfeld at the position.

Mulligan has also spent time with the Rams, Jets, Titans and Dolphins. While not much of a receiving threat (14 receptions in four seasons, eight of them last year with the Rams), he is a solid blocker, and they could use some depth there.
