Browns go from no kicker to one Cundiff

Billy Cundiff AP

After picking a 53-man roster, the Browns finally decided to add a kicker.

According to Alex Marvez of FOX Sports, the Browns have added veteran Billy Cundiff after a workout today.

The Browns also worked out former Packers camper Giorgio Tavecchio, and were going to have Dan Carpenter try out before he signed with the Bills.

Cundiff spent time with the Redskins and 49ers (as their playoff incentive/insurance for David Akers) last year, and was in camp with the Jets this summer.

I sure miss Phil Dawson. Hope I don’t miss him more, later on…

Cundiff kicked for the Browns when Dawson was hurt, and he’s a former pro bowler. If he’s still got it, then this is a solid choice.

As a life long fan of the Browns I for some reason sense some type of management ineptness over this kicker thing 5 days before the season begins. Never should have let Dawson walk imo.

How could you sign Billy Cundiff? Now that he got signed, he is the worst kicker on an NFL roster. 58.3% last year, that is horrendous!!!!

  5. skinswillsurprise says: Sep 3, 2013 4:39 PM

Hide your remotes when you watch the games Browns fans!! When he was the Skins kicker, I smashed at least three of them! HTTR!!

What??!! The browns with a typical “browns” move. This guy is washed up.

In the Baltimore/Washington area when somebody screws up they call it a “cundiff”..as in
“I really cundiffed my drive on the 12th hole directly into the pond”

  7. darienal says: Sep 3, 2013 4:47 PM

So now… when are they going to add a kicker?

  8. rufustfireflyjr says: Sep 3, 2013 4:48 PM

    1 Cundiff = 0 kickers

  9. ermiller79 says: Sep 3, 2013 4:54 PM

Yeah, this is a pretty bad choice, but I can’t imagine that he’ll be the kicker for too long into the season. They obviously weren’t in love with Graham or Bogatay, either of which would probably also be able to make as make as many kicks as Cundiff at this point. However, after cutting them they still need someone they know can at least handle the gameday duties to some extent for at least this week. I’d look for them bring someone else in as soon as the rest of the league shakes out. Why not give Harvard “Kickalicious” Rugland a shot (or Crosby for that matter if Green Bay signs Rugland)? There are bound to be other options floating out there in the coming weeks as well.

Where is Barth Gimble when you need him?

  11. ermiller79 says: Sep 3, 2013 5:03 PM

And where’s Olindo Mare? Since when is a 40 yr old kicker that can probably still kick (better than Cundiff) too old for the NFL?

  12. steelcurtainn says: Sep 3, 2013 5:07 PM

Can’t wait to see him hit the game winner against the ravens!!!!!

    Hey, I did say “if.”

    (C’mon old guy, have it.)

You know, I get it. Havard Rugland is a newb. But he showed all of football he can kick the long ball. 49 ,50 yards in one game alone. With a little coaching I can see this kid breaking the 63 yard record. What could it hurt to bring him in one more time, he def. Looks better after working with akers. I hope someone gets this guy.

Nice Match. Crappy kicker for a crappy team

  16. getyourownname says: Sep 3, 2013 5:14 PM

    As I predicted.

Not terrible, but just don’t expect him not to shank a few.

  17. freebird2011 says: Sep 3, 2013 5:17 PM

Bogotay looked great against the Lions in preseason. Indeed, he actually boomed a kickoff through the uprights. Thus, it was a bit surprising when he didn’t make the squad unless it was an injury situation.

It may work out. If it doesn’t, the FO will be looking for a new kicker when Cundiff is lynched by a mob of impatient fans.

And Bogatay ended up on IR – rather makes me think Chud has taken lesson from Bellichek school of misinformation (but with more personality).

as a browns fan …if the kicker is a huge part of our season then we’ll be 4 and 12… i hope we hear very little from cundiff this year and he is there just to kick extra points…some browns fans are making such a big deal about dawson because we’ve had nothing else in ctown….so lets talk richardson and weeden.

  22. rg3enoughsaid says: Sep 3, 2013 5:38 PM

If I thought the browns would be in position to need a 20yd FG to send them to the playoffs, Id say watch out Cleveland fans, but, you dont have to worry about it…

  23. dumbpollack says: Sep 3, 2013 5:42 PM

All this because the Browns refused to give the best kicker in franchise history 2 million? Oh by the way we are under the cap by a lot!! Thanks, Joe.

  24. mrfrostyj says: Sep 3, 2013 5:48 PM

poor Browns fans. They’ve been bottom feeders so long they get confused so let me explain. The new ownership actually invested in the teams offense and defense which meant paying a kicker mvp money (Dawson) became a non option.

You only need a guy who can kick a ball 60 yards if you don’t plan on having an offense. In other words Phil Dawson was not Cleveland’s mvp and a pro bowler because he was good. He was all that because the team sucked.

As a Browns fan, I see a lot of close games this year. Dawson is the best foul weather kicker in the league, and I really hope we don’t miss him.

  26. baltimoresnativeson says: Sep 3, 2013 5:57 PM

Man there must be a serious shortage of kickers in this league.

  27. ridingwithnohandlebars says: Sep 3, 2013 6:09 PM

Don’t know if it is physical or mental, but it does not seem like he has recovered from the calf injury he had near the end of the 2011 season.

Justin Medlock was 90% for 2 1/2 years in CFL… punts too …4/4 in Soldier Field last year with Panthers for 10 games and just hit a 47 and 37 yard FG’s for Raiders last game on 1 day notice…27 years old..and didn’t even get brought in for a workout.. kicked in Canada…cold windy..like a certain field by a lake… guess none of that says bring him in for a look

Cundiff is just keeping the seat warm until Kick-A-Lishous gets here.
