Cowboys, Brian Waters finally get together

Miami Dolphins v New England Patriots Getty Images

For months, there’s been speculation that the Cowboys would sign veteran guard Brian Waters. It’s finally happening.

Brad Sham, the longtime radio voice of the Cowboys, reported on Twitter that the Cowboys and Waters have agreed to a deal.

Despite a report in mid-August that the Cowboys’ pursuit of Waters was dead, we’ve been reporting that Waters would play in the right situation. Apparently Jerry Jones has offered enough money to make Dallas the right situation.

Waters played for the Chiefs for 11 seasons and then started all 16 games for the Patriots in 2011 before sitting out in 2012. Waters has a reputation for being a smart and savvy veteran, so if he has stayed in shape he should be able to make an immediate contribution in Dallas.

Lol the cowgirls are making a lot of moves for team that should be ready for the regular season.

  3. lanman11 says: Sep 3, 2013 7:16 PM

The way this guy walked on the Pats tells me a lot about him. No Super Bowl for him….

  4. gixrider says: Sep 3, 2013 7:17 PM

Had nothing to do with money. He’s a hundred years old, he didn’t want to go through camp. lol!

  5. lonskils says: Sep 3, 2013 7:17 PM

Woot! Now pass your physical so we don’t have to see Doug Free at Right Guard.

  6. strokinmyego says: Sep 3, 2013 7:21 PM

Waters was really really good for the Patriots in 2011 but any NFL player who is away from the game for almost two years is more likely than not going to struggle.

  7. Dennis Allen's Outgoing Persona says: Sep 3, 2013 7:23 PM

Brian Waters played the majority of his career for the Kansas City Chiefs who used to be the Dallas Texans.. Illumaniti

Quality addition. Consummate team leader and teammate

  9. patriots123456 says: Sep 3, 2013 7:24 PM

    Waters is the real deal…

He played great for the Patriots, if he stayed in shape I think the Cowboys will be very happy with him…

  10. leftygun says: Sep 3, 2013 7:29 PM

Jones in panic mode. Waters fleecing him.

  11. divan22 says: Sep 3, 2013 7:31 PM

Boy, as a Cowboys fan, I can’t tell you how much it pleases me to see all the hate from fans of inferior teams.

You’re fooling nobody: “hate” = jealousy.

Jealous of our Lombardis. Jealous of our stature as America’s Team. Jealous of the fact that your team is an insignificant piece of lint in comparison.

So hate on, losers. And be sure to dislike the heck outta this post!

  12. itsmammoth says: Sep 3, 2013 7:31 PM

Good move! Glad he’s apart of the squad, and I hope he does well!

    Go Cowboys! :D

  13. Eli on Injured Reserve says: Sep 3, 2013 7:31 PM

So if he has stayed in shape he should be able to make an immediate contribution in Dallas? Heck, even if he came in an ambulance and lined up with a walker, he would make an immediate contribution.

  14. cowboys1022 says: Sep 3, 2013 7:35 PM

Felix jones is what you call desperate

  15. splitspider7 says: Sep 3, 2013 7:35 PM

it’s not desperate, it’s called trying to make your team better. they wanted him a while back. i think people are just getting a bit scared that my boys are building something resembling a decent o-line. watch out!

  16. jimnaizeeum says: Sep 3, 2013 7:40 PM

Wonder why he sat out last year…did no teams pursue him?

  17. seanleemvp says: Sep 3, 2013 7:41 PM

    For everyone laughing know this

In 2011, PFF graded Brian Waters as the 4th-best OG in the league. He ranked No. 1 among guards as a pass blocker.

This Guy has been a beast his entrie career and there’s no sign hes lost anything because when he last played he was still a pro bowler. Laugh at Mackenzy Bernadeu all you want but no B.W.

  18. fryeways says: Sep 3, 2013 7:43 PM

I’m the furthest thing from a Cowboys fan but you guys should be rejoicing that there’s finally a legit pro guard in your line. Waters was tremendous for the Patriots two years back.

  19. jayhawk6 says: Sep 3, 2013 7:46 PM

Brian Waters is a beast, who acts as his own agent and keeps his own counsel. After a few years, the Chiefs excused him from much of training camp because he ultimately proved he would be ready by training on his own.

Carl Peterson’s signing him from somebody’s practice squad, where he was listed as a tight end, rates as one of Peterson’s shrewdest moves.

  20. beerbudsnbevo says: Sep 3, 2013 7:46 PM

Lol the cowgirls are making a lot of moves for team that should be ready for the regular season.

    ***************

Yeah cause none of the other 31 teams are making moves right now.

    Sheesh

  21. mrsryansfamoustoejam says: Sep 3, 2013 8:06 PM

The dude basically quit on the Chiefs and the Patriots. He’s been sitting for nearly two years, probably pounding chicken wings. No way he’s in playing shape.

The idiocy of Jerry Jones is infinite. In his recently publicized, world class, cognitively-heightened state, Jerry’s brain pan electrical fritatta must have realized that Romo can’t play catch with Dez when he’s laying on his back.

  22. phloorioisanarcissist says: Sep 3, 2013 8:06 PM

Divan22,I hate the cowboys for the same reason I hate the seahawks. All the annoying trash talking fans. Not only that but they are overrated EVERY year, because of their large bandwagon fan base. Everyone other than cowboy fans would agree with at least that. Jerry Kid Jones is also one of the most annoying owners in football. So yeah, I have good reason to not like them. Keep on being classy Divan22.

  23. doe22us says: Sep 3, 2013 8:07 PM

This shows that if you are talented you are talented.

  24. drgreenstreak says: Sep 3, 2013 8:08 PM

If Water’s is in shape, the Cowboys will have a running game as well as one of the smartest O-lines in the NFL. This is good for Romo as it would be for any QB taking more pressure per snap than required to make good throwing decisions.
I always thought Waters would wait for the regular season.

  25. phloorioisanarcissist says: Sep 3, 2013 8:15 PM

Oh yeah, Divan22, the cow ladies are going to be 8-8 at best this year. The only losers on here is ones like you with no life that sit in front of their CPU and eat Cheetos all day and dream of the organization they support with all their hard earned cash of winning a SB. You have no life, so you live it with a team you decided to cheer for one day, and it just became a “thing”. Either that or you’re obsessive. Or both.

  26. divious24 says: Sep 3, 2013 8:16 PM

I swear the hate on this site reminds me of a woman magazine if the article isn’t about your team then just stay away from responding act like MEN n stop gossiping

  30. roylp says: Sep 3, 2013 8:43 PM

    Jerry = Senile

  31. roylp says: Sep 3, 2013 8:45 PM

Yeah cause none of the other 31 teams are making moves right now.

HM well yeah I guess your right. There are a lot of teams making moves. Well except for the good ones.

  32. bushwoodcc says: Sep 3, 2013 8:51 PM

In his last season played he missed the Pats camp and came in and picked up the line schemes with no issues.

As long as he stayed in shape during the time he stayed away he should be able to step right in and give the Cowboys quality O-line play.

  33. gibson34 says: Sep 3, 2013 8:58 PM

our oline is now in better shape than last year which was a weakness. defensively 1st team allowed hardly any points this season and looked awesome. Get the running game going with that oline and our offensive weapons and we should put 30 plus up a game. 14-2 and SB this year.

    Hate on losers…..

    HOW BOUT THOSE COWBOYS!!!!

  34. orivar says: Sep 3, 2013 9:20 PM

He skipped camp is all. Some people get automatic passes, some hold out, some have hip injuries, and others delay signing.

    No surprise here.

  35. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Sep 3, 2013 10:01 PM

Heck of a player in the day no doubt but I’m just not feeling this addition. Too often Jerry breaks the bank on old guys with little left in the tank.

    Another example I fear…

    ===================================

I’m on here everyday and see almost no trash talking from Dallas fans. And I live 10 minutes from Valley Ranch. Not much the trash talking going on for about 10 years now. It went up a little after Romo came on the scene, but now we’re kind of numb to it all. Just hope they stop sucking someday.

  37. ytsejamer1 says: Sep 3, 2013 10:34 PM

The Cowboys got a good player here…that man came to NE and showed Logan Mankins how guards are supposed to play. He was BY FAR, the best guard on our team in 2011. He took over a lot of the responsibilities that typically would be handled and run by the center…handling the silent snap count and tapping the center on the leg. He really played outstanding that year.

I was ticked he didn’t return the following season…and as a fan, didn’t care for him wanting a pay raise while not putting in ANY of the work that is required of all his teammates.

  38. jaguar0413 says: Sep 3, 2013 11:04 PM

As good of a player as Brian Waters was, I think it speaks volumes about the Cowboys that he is expected to come in and start after sitting out an entire NFL season. But hey, this is the team that gave Doug Free $17 mill guaranteed to be a platoon tackle.

    Welcome to Jerry’s world.

  39. krustylaugh says: Sep 4, 2013 12:08 AM

People cam hate on the Cowboys all they want but Waters played very well for New England and could be a Hall of Famer. the Cowboys interior line was putrid last season. Assuming hes healthy there is no reason to believe he isn’t a major upgrade. Great move by the Cowboys and this is coming from a Bills fan

  40. kendogsinger says: Sep 4, 2013 3:21 AM

Not a bad deal, sit on your duff for almost two years and no training camp and pick up 1.5 mil guar with bonus for playing time could be 3 mil. So who’s the dummy here, certainly not Waters ha!

  41. lagg1 says: Sep 4, 2013 4:36 AM

Good move by Dallas! Winters maybe 36 years old but he can still play and he wants a shot at a ring.

  42. bbigbluewreckingcrew says: Sep 4, 2013 6:45 AM

I hear Jerry has a call in to Barry Sanders as well…I hear for the right amount of $ , he’s got a lot left in the tank.

Lol… Cowboys are a joke. Way to go Jerry , a few more stunning moves like this and you’ll be up for GM of the year.

  43. junebugt212 says: Sep 4, 2013 2:31 PM

Leary, Frederick, and Waters should be an immediate upgrade from what we had last season. Looking forward to what this group does together. Go Cowboys!

  44. trollaikman8 says: Sep 4, 2013 6:58 PM

Not sure how much they paid for Waters but if it’s just the $3.5M that they reclaimed from Doug Free, then it’s worthwhile experiment.
The biggest thing is how many weeks before he’s ready to play.
