Media member Bart Scott rips media “jerks” in Jets’ locker room

Bart Scott thinks there are a lot of bad people in the Jets’ locker room. And he’s not talking about his former teammates or coaches.

Scott, who played for the Jets the last four seasons and retired this year, said on WFAN this morning that the reporters who cover the Jets are a destructive force, and the best thing to do is avoid them.

“In that locker room, there’s a bunch of jerks in there,” Scott said. “There’s a lot of people that go about business the wrong way. I didn’t want to deal with that. I thought, let’s not deal with them. You can’t not deal with them and talk to other media because they’ll put up a complaint against you. So the best thing was just to go against everybody, and the good kind of get bottled in with the bad.”

Scott is now a member of the media himself, having joined the Sunday pregame show on the CBS Sports Network. If Scott is an honest and straightforward analyst, there will be times when he criticizes active players. Who may then view Scott as a jerk.

  1. That really sucks. Understand you need a story but you’re in NYC. How many people are there? How many stories can you get?

I’m a bills fan and don’t like hearing about this classless garbage

How do some reporters sleep at night.

    Skip Bayless.

  2. Not sure how this is a story 3 days before Kickoff, but…I’m glad guys who went to the dark side are still willing to be honest about the state of media today. For every decent reporter there are two goofballs wasting everyone’s time.

  3. “You can’t not deal with them and talk to other media because they’ll put up a complaint against you.”

Sounds like he probably has a legitimate complaint against the New York media. But I’m not sure what good one should ever expect from a New Yorker to begin with. Rude. Obnoxious. You name it. Not a laudable bunch.

  4. Bart Scott’s explanation of his media policy is barely intelligible. His commentary on CBS must be fascinating.

  5. He’s right. The NY media is the worst, because their editors need them to be. Manish Mehta was a great beat writer. Now he’s New Yorks Skip Bayless.

  6. Scott is now a member of the media himself, having joined the Sunday pregame show on the CBS Sports Network. If Scott is an honest and straightforward analyst, there will be times when he criticizes active players. Who may then view Scott as a jerk.

    Can’t wait.

  7. “If Scott is an honest and straightforward analyst, there will be times when he criticizes active players”

    Can’t wait!

  8. He’s correct but Rex still has the belief that the media is his friend and keeps giving them material. He needs to learn from the likes of Reid, Belichick, Coughlin, Tomlin, and so on, guys that give just enough in press conferences and no more. It may be boring but it keeps them at bay.

  9. Bart Scott is so right!

After all, it was the media who made Rex Ryan an arrogant, incompentent buffoon. The media made Mark Sanchez a turnover machine who got a terrible contract extension. The media was also responsible for Revis’s holdouts, Braylon Edwards DUI, Scott reacting poorly to fans, or Cromartie’s idiot reaction to Reggie Bush after a Jets loss.

After all, the Jets are such a perfect team, they can’t look in the mirror and see that they’re the problem, right?!

  10. The media doe not like to be held to account for bad reporting, news manipulations and the jerks who call themselves reporters. How dare Bart speak up against the mob he is part of?

  11. Bart is dead on on this one.
I actually don’t blame Rex for his latest blow up.
it kills me that the media makes a big deal over who’s the starting QB and they ask over and over again and he answered when the time is right. I know they are doing their jobs, but they need a life… it’s a freaking kids game played by grown ass men making millions.. who really cares!
classic example of the NYC media and I live here!

    good for Bart!

  12. I kind of agree with him. The Media are jerks. They tend to strong arm the players into meeting with them.
But then again I do enjoy it. I love it when The Media guys is like “Why you made bro? You agreed to meet with me.” Failing to put out that if they didn’t meet with them then they were going to keep putting in greivences with their team (that requires players to meet a certain amount of times with the media) and then turn around and write whatever they want about the player whether true or false.

  13. Boomer Esiason said the same thing on Boomer and Carton last week.

Hopefully these comments lead to the NYDN taking note that they are embarrassing themselves by employing Manish Mehta.

Sports journalism is supposed to be, on the whole, objective factual reporting.

Mehta hasn’t pumped our an objective article or twitter post in years.
Every question he asks the players and every article he writes is anti-jets, anti-rex, anti-izdik.

New York Daily News, fire this JERK!

  14. He’s not referring to the generic “media” of national outlets like NBC, Fox or CBS (which he is part of).

He’s referring to the entrenched local beat writers (pretty much the Post and Daily News writers) like Mehta, Hubbock, Costello, Serby etc who do their very best to insert themselves into the stories about the Jets and cause kerfuffles with the players that they can write and tweet about ad nauseum.

He’s definitely not wrong here. Until the Jets get better as an organization, the local knives will always be out unfortunately.

  15. Its funny how the “media” becomes jerks when the team sucks terribly. Yeah, when you’re a terrible team the stories are going to be negative.

  16. Rex is a genius. He got his starter hurt in the 4th quarter of the 4th preseason game and he got all of you to believe Manish Mehta is the problem. HAHAHAHA!

    WAR Mehta

  17. I think Bart actually has a point here – it’s fine to criticize Rex and the players all you want, but they go out of their way to criticize him. I mean, he went to watch his son in a college game and it was a front page headline. And what about reporters and photographers tailing him on vacation and snapping photos of him and his wife?

You would never see this kind of thing in smaller markets, and I understand that it comes with the territory, but at some point decency needs to prevail.

Totally agree with the worst reporter out there and on ESPN—Skip Bayless. Oh they just hired another loser political analyst to do sports–Ober-something. That’s why we watch only games on ESPN. Best NFL reporting is Pro Football Talk. Hope they don’t change the format- spot on reporting of NFL news in one hour.

  19. This is the first time I have heard that Bart Scott is joining the CBS pregame crew. Terrible. NFL Network is the only pregame show I will be able to tolerate now.

  20. Transfer Mehta to New England…

After two press conferences with Bill he’d be calling the “suicide hotline”…

  21. That’s not fair – Bart Scott is already a jerk. We don’t need to wait for him to criticize a player’s performance.

But hey – the media in NYC is a circus.

  22. Manish Mehta is so notoriously bad even Chris Christie said something about how much of a hack he is (the NYDN replied with a 4th grade-esque attack on the back page, of course) I don’t know a single fan who wants this guy to keep his job a minute longer.

Jets fans are subjected to this type of garbage reporting and articles near constantly, with only a few notable exceptions, half of them fan blogs. Not to mention when we do get good reporters covering the team, the inevitably get assigned to the Giants beat. See; Jenny Vrentas, Connor Orr, ect.

  23. While the headline in this article is certainly true, two things:

    1. The media are hardly the only thing that stinks around the New York Jets. The coaches, management, and ownership are clueless blowhards, inept, and crooked, respectively. If the media members are negative all the time, they certainly have a reason to be.

    2. Bart Scott has no credibility and he has a long history of blowing his top with the media. When he publicly and aggressively tried to orchestrate a media boycott (which he hilariously called a “mutiny”), it went absolutely nowhere. What he can’t grasp is that when a paper portrayed his team as clowns, his mouth was a big reason why.

  24. Manish Mehta always sites his “sources”. If you read enough of his garbage you’ll find that his sources are about as real as Manti Teo’s girlfriend. The NYDN should be embarrassed.

  25. It’s about time someone had a big enough set to say something about these people,Rex is Rex but these guys make him out to be a buffoon and treat him like garbage .
He can’t say anything without it being twisted like we’re going to the super bowl ,name a coach that doesn’t say it..you can’t!
Coughlin said it last week so did Shanahan and nothings said ,Coughlin leaves a “player” in game he breaks a leg and nothing ,Rex does it and he’s an idiot and should be fired…….It’s disgusting and needs to be stopped

  26. I’m reminded of my favorite bible verse. If I may paraphrase, “why are you worried about the speck in my eye when you have a tree in your eye”. Take a look in the mirror there big guy.

  27. They are such jerks that they forced Rex Ryan to get a tattoo of Mark Sanchez and his wife on his arm! I won’t argue the fact that the media can be a pain, because they are. Nonetheless, Rex Ryan needs to rise above that and lead this team with class and character. He’s not just the head coach, he’s the leader of this team! Again, leaders rise above all the garbage and set the good example for their team. Rex Ryan is a big time failure at that!

    You’ll see!

  29. Sorry, but Bart Scott is right.

Manesh Mehta is one of them, and the other one is Rich Cimini.

Nothing wrong with being tough and aggressive with the questions, but these 2 guys try to make news by being belligerent punks.

  30. Boston’s local media are the same.
Wonder if every fan base has this problem. I am guessing with the likes of skippy being national….

  31. I’m a Pats fan, but I agree that some of the NY media def have an anti-Jets bias.

Belicheck gets hammered for the way he deals with the media, and maybe rightfully sometimes.

However, you never see or read a lot of the crap that appears about the Jets, not just the Pats, but a lot of other organizations are the same way, they keep their players and staff from fueling anti-team rhetoric.

  32. You know what’s funny? The name Manish Mehta appears 11 times in this comment thread, never in a positive light..

but how many people had heard of this guy 12 months ago?

    sleaze sells.

  33. What? If he is honest and straight forward he may be viewed as a jerk. Ha..problem is these reporters are not honest, they have an agenda to be a destructive force.

Bright future for Scott. We need more honest and straightforward media professionals.
