Rams cut suspended linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar

Jo-Lonn Dunbar AP

When the NFL announced that Rams linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar would be suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the league policy on performance-enhancing substances, coach Jeff Fisher ripped Dunbar for being “selfish” and hurting the team.

Apparently Fisher wasn’t messing around: The Rams released Dunbar today, according to Howard Balzer of KSDK.

Dunbar started all 16 games last season and was expected to be a starter this season before his PED suspension, so the news that he’s been released comes as a surprise. But Fisher has emphasized that he wants to build his team his way, and it’s clear that Fisher isn’t a big fan of Dunbar’s right now.

Suspended players don’t get paid and don’t count toward the 53-man roster, so it would have been easy for the Rams to keep him at least through his suspension, and cut him after the suspension only if they’re satisfied with how their defense performs without him. But Fisher apparently decided that he simply doesn’t want to coach a selfish player who did something that hurt the team.

This is a little bit of a shock. Jo-Lonn Dunbar played very well for the Rams last year.

I’ll always be thankful to Jo-Lonn for finally putting Alexis Smith out of his misery, allowing the Kaeprnick era to begin!

There has to be some behind the scenes compounding factor(s) to this release. Fish has a history of willingness to take far more problematic figures on his team compared to a guy that gets a 4-gamer for a banned substance and is considered the vocal, emotional leader of the Rams defense.

Shocked by this move and that he has now decided to make some sort of moral/ethical stand, but surely sends shockwaves through a very young Rams locker room that has several players with a few red flags including Chris Givens, Jenoris Jenkins, Isiah Pead, and Alec Ogletree among others.

Probably figured the guy wouldn’t be any good without his drugs.

And if he keeps running, the Jimmy Durante era won’t last long.

Those 4 and the others have now been served notice. Kudos to Fisher for not putting up with it.
I live 7 miles from the “Razor” (about 4 miles from a former TE’s residence) so I know what could possibly happen when the children don’t know right from wrong.
Good luck to Fisher and the Rams’ fans this season. Fish has made some real good improvements so far.

This from a fan of a team that has set a record for suspended players for PED use.At least two of the players on the Rams that used a banned substance is no longer with the team. Can you say the same for the Seahawks?By the way, your moniker suits you well. What a cretin!!

Because they need 5 more suspensions to even TIE with the Seahawks. Stop trying to pass off your stink on another team. You nearly have 3x more infractions on the Rams, and lead the league with 8 suspensions since 2010.

Not shocking at all… introducing Alec Ogletree. He will make you say Jo… who?

  24. mlander12 says: Sep 4, 2013 12:45 AM

So far this year the Seahawks have a grand total of 1 PED Suspension, just like the Bronces, 49ers, Cardinals and Ravens. The Rams lead the league with 3 followed by the Redskins, Vikings, Giants and Colts with 2 each.

  25. godofwine330 says: Sep 4, 2013 9:00 AM

That’s kinda foul. They could have kept him through his suspension. Does the suspension not go down when you are unemployed?

  26. stabbymike says: Sep 4, 2013 10:33 AM

i think the move had more to do with will witherspoon and strong play by ray ray armstrong. just my theory. still a surprising release though.
