Report: Sanchez won’t be able to go this week

AP

In recent days, the sea change in New York has been noticeable, as reports have emerged that paint quarterback Geno Smith as the favorite of the Jets’ coaching staff.

But it appears that whatever the long-term implications of a quarterback change might be there, the short-term questions are moot.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, incumbent Mark Sanchez will miss this week’s opener against the Buccaneers because of his shoulder injury.

That opens the door for Smith to start (which he may have done anyway).

That opens the door for questions about the future if he plays well (which he could).

That opens the door for questions about the future if he doesn’t (which he also could).

But for the moment, the health questions will keep the Jets coaching staff from having to make the hard call.

  1. And of course everyone is taking the word of the jets that Sanchez can’t play this week.

There is a possibility that the injury has healed well enough that Sanchez could’ve played if the Jets wanted him to start but that his injury, like the author has said, keeps the Jets from having to take any heat for starting Geno. It gives them cover no matter what happens.

If Geno bombs, which is very likely, Sanchez may, all of a sudden, make great strides in his recovery.

  2. Manish Mehta, do us all a favor and just move out of NYC forever. Take Lupica too I honestly have no idea how both of you have created careers for yourselves.

Wait, yes I do, you work for the Daily News thats how!

  3. “Well, coach….I’m afraid I have some good news and some bad news.

“The good news is, Sanchez can’t go this week.

“The bad news is, Geno can.”

  4. Does anyone besides his mother and hairdresser really give a damn what Sanchez does? He sucks as a qb and is not even as relevant as Tebow…who at least won a Heisman and 2 college championships. I can’t wait to see this clown with rollers in his hair and wearing a flowered bathrobe. Now that the real season is here, let’s stop talking about this guy and his coach. We’ve wasted enough paper!

  5. i’m probably the minority here but i’m acutally rooting for sanchez. i think all the talent is there. the jets just aren’t getting him any help. the guy did go to 2 straight AFC championship games. and before you say the defense carried them… i literally watched him outplay peyton in 2010 and then come in the next week and looked like brady against NE when the jets destroyed them. that team just destroyed his confidence with tebow and now geno. i bet he’d be a pro bowler in MIN.

  6. Let’s not lose sight of the fact that Ryan’s boneheaded decision to play Sanchez with the scrubs DID wind up affecting the team, for at least one week, by forcing them to play an unready rookie at QB.

Why are the hapless Jets on this site everyday?
They are terrible and a circus event

You answered your own question Bro

  8. One look at geno and you know he’s gonna be terrible and overmatched. After the bucs crush them this week, Sanchez will be the starter for the rest of the season.

  9. I thought the Jags and Raiders were the laughing stock of the league but the Jets have made a convincing case the last 2 seasons.

Jets can’t win with the Dirty Sanchez.

Ryan Fitzpatrick looks like Brady against the Pats’ secondary. Wouldn’t put too much stock in that.

  11. Really? Some Jets fans think this is a smokescreen? Remember, you guys picked up Brady Quinn yesterday. Count how many QB’s are on your roster, Jets fans, and compare it to other teams. You have at least one more than EVERY other team. Means Sanchez WILL NOT be available at a MINIMUM week 1.

  12. Next year at this time, Jets fans will be excited to see their new head coach and Clowney starting his first game in the NFL as a Jet.

There’s something for Jets fans to hold on to during this season to get them through.

  13. Would this decision have anything to do with the Jets facing the Buccaneers and Darrelle Revis Week 1?

The national headlines would explode if Revis caught more Sanchez’ passes than Stephen Hill.

  14. I still don’t understand why the Jets get more Press than thier co-tenants, the NYG’s. This Jet team is an utter disgrace and being a New Yorker I am so sick and tired of reading about this teams little Soap Operas.

Here’s the thing though, any LOGICAL football fan will tell you that Sanchez has that talent, which he does. The problem with Sanchez is that he still makes rookie mistakes and it’s true that he doesn’t have the help, which makes it worse that he’s still making rookie mistakes. I’ve seen Sanchez make some throws that can be compared with the rest of them, then I’ve seen him follow up with a gamble into triple coverage that of course ended up intercepted.

He forces issues that he doesn’t need to force or throws it all on the table and goes YOLO! Sanchez is talented, Sanchez shows he deserves to be a NFL QB based on his skill set, but all that is negated as Sanchez makes dumb plays that are easily avoided.

  16. ‘Now listen to me Geno, this is the J Z here, if you toss more than two interceptions in the first quarter you make dam sure you go down lame with a bad ankle, bad something’ ‘You got that boy?” Otherwise your career could be over before it starts.

  17. The Brady Quinn signing makes no sense at all to me. Sanchez and Smith seem to be 1a and 1b and Simms had a great preseason. Where does Quinn fit into the mix?

They can forget Clowney. No way his reps let him play there. They’ll play the Eli card and force Clowney to another team. Can’t blame them.

  19. Has any other team in recent history went with 4 QBs on their roster? Lots of teams just have two. And not like Brady Quinn (or similar) wouldn’t have been available to sign as a free agent if he was needed. The Jets are just so terribly run.

  20. Got to feel bad for the guy to some degree. Had a lot of potential before he joined the circus. He needs a new start for sure if he has ANY shot of salvaging his career.

  21. Everyone is missing the machiavellian genius of Rex Ryan. How he purposely played Sanchez with the scrubs increasing the chance of injury so he could avoid the QB decision at all, which has now defaulted to Geno for a trial run & save’s face with Sanchez keeping options open to use him in a couple of weeks if Geno flops.

  22. Brilliant move by Rex. A win win in a losing situation.

Mehta Manure most have also broke that story with his source: his own tweets.
