Saints to put Jonathan Vilma on short-term IR

Jonathan Vilma AP

The Saints had the worst defense in NFL history last year.

And it’s hard to argue it’s getting better with each passing day.

The latest blow comes with the news linebacker Jonathan Vilma will go on the injured reserve/designated for return list, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Losing Vilma for half the year because of knee problems will force the Saints to plug David Hawthorne into the starting lineup next to Curtis Lofton, stretching thin a group that wasn’t deep to begin with.

The Saints have already lost outside linebacker Will Smith and defensive end Kenyon Coleman for the year, with outside linebacker Victor Butler a longshot to return from the PUP list.

While Vilma might not have been a perfect fit in a 3-4 defense, he was a solid vet, and a loss they can ill afford for any amount of time.

Ramon Humber played great in preseason and Hawthorne may be better than Vilma at this stage of his career…But he is a team leader and smart veteran that’s tuff to lose…

The old stud Vilma is banged up and didn’t have speed anymore. This isn’t the end of the world.

6 weeks is not half the year.

The story seems to be the saints had a horrific defense last and some of those players are gone so they might be worse.

If anyone watched them closely they would realize players like vilma and will smith (harper also) are the reasons why they were slow and bad.

The young players are better now…

Not bad to lose somebody like Vilma and still have Hawthorne/Lofton/Humber as your ILB rotation. I daresay there isn’t a deeper group of inside linebackers in football.

It’ll give him to study opposing players’ injuries, so he can focus his cheap-shots.

This team is gonna be the surprise of 2013…….. Because of how bad they suck! They weren’t bad last year because Payton was in time out. They were bad because their defense and o-line were bad. Those 2 things have not changed!

I’m happy that I’m not the only one that doesn’t think Vilma is that good anymore.
