Asomugha tries and fails to buy jersey No. 24 for $24,000

Nnamdi Asomugha has made tens of millions of dollars in his NFL career. Anthony Dixon has made about $1 million. So when Asomugha arrived in San Francisco and wanted the No. 24 jersey Dixon already wore for the 49ers, Asomugha figured he could buy Dixon off.

But it didn’t work.

Dixon told that he and Asomugha discussed the matter, and Asomugha thought $24,000 would be a fair price for No. 24. Dixon, however, decided that wasn’t enough.

“We tried to go $24K for 24, but I told him, ‘No, I’m going to keep my 24,'” Dixon said.

But Asomugha may still up his offer. And Dixon told Asomugha, “I’m not ready to sell it, yet,” with the “yet” implying (as fans of the movie High Fidelity know) that Dixon may eventually be willing to sell the number.

So Asomugha may still end up with No. 24 on his jersey when the 49ers open the season on the Sunday. He’ll just have to spend more than $24,000.

Unless Dixon gets a lot more money, he’s an idiot and should have snatched up the 24k.

  2. vincentbojackson says: Sep 4, 2013 9:24 PM

$24,000 is probably just how much Asomugha had on him at the time.

  3. billbrasky72 says: Sep 4, 2013 9:38 PM

Asomugha tries and fails all the time. Why should this be different?

  4. captainwisdom8888 says: Sep 4, 2013 9:39 PM

If Nnamdi were half the player he has been hyped up to be over his career, than Dixon would almost certainly be honored to give up the number to him. Asomugha is a complete sham though, and everyone said he was the best CB in football while in Oakland because “opposing QBs never throw to his side.” That turned out to be a complete joke…

  5. qwerty007qwerty007 says: Sep 4, 2013 9:40 PM

I wear 24, but I wanna get paid like I’m wearing Wayne Gretzky.

    – Anthony Dixon

  6. neagle64 says: Sep 4, 2013 9:41 PM

Dixon should hold out for more, Asomugha is being paid $1.35M in base salary to play for the 49ers and $4M for not playing for the Eagles

  7. DaveKShape says: Sep 4, 2013 9:42 PM

Asomugha has better things to worry about… you know, like proving he is more than a journeyman 1-year contract guy at this point in his career.

It’s just a damn number just give it to him take the money. Such easy money! A lot of ppl don’t even make 24k in a year. And he can get that from just giving up a number

  11. frankgarrett says: Sep 4, 2013 9:51 PM

How bout 24k for kids who need food

  12. dirtybird28 says: Sep 4, 2013 10:05 PM

He’s a fringe player, take the cash!

  13. bleedpurplenblack says: Sep 4, 2013 10:08 PM

I hope Dixon steals all he can from Asomugha. It’s only fair… Asomugha stole way more than that from Philly.

  14. tebowforprez says: Sep 4, 2013 10:09 PM

Dixon said dont try to make an AsOfMugha

  15. gochargersgo says: Sep 4, 2013 10:15 PM

Uhh take the money and run pal. Youre a backup running back.

  16. themagicman1223 says: Sep 4, 2013 10:23 PM

Because numbers have so much meaning.

  17. youcantmakemepickausername says: Sep 4, 2013 10:28 PM

And upon hearing this, super-obsessed San Francisco sports fan looking like Robert DeNiro drives his really funky van to go kill Dixon so his hero can wear the number.

  18. markus3603 says: Sep 4, 2013 10:33 PM

Asomugha Hasnt done well with that number recently, so Give him 28 or 22 or something

  19. aldog83 says: Sep 4, 2013 10:40 PM

    He should buy 21.

    He sucked as 24.

But he will suck regardless of the number!

(He still has a smoking hot wife and millions in the bank.)

Forget about the number and try not to get burned.

  20. aldog83 says: Sep 4, 2013 10:43 PM

If you want to make even more news…………..

Take the 24 that Dixon refused and donate it to one of the children’s charities you were so instrumental with in Oakland.

(When your career was more relevant than who you married or what number your trying to buy.)

You would continue to be a hero for those kids.

Regardless of your play on the field.

  21. aaroncurryisbust says: Sep 4, 2013 10:59 PM

Dixon and the Whiners are so classless try could be a Marxist utopia.

  22. forty9asty says: Sep 4, 2013 10:59 PM

I hope Dixon keeps his number 24. The guy has been on the bubble for a few years now, but always seems to make the play when called upon and forces the coaches not to cut him. The guy has heart and a love for the game and this team. Asomugha was once considered the best at his position, but undeniably has lost a step or two. Dixon should tell him that if he contributes to this team by getting… I dunno, say 6 picks this year, then next year he will “sell” him the number

  23. thegreatgabbert says: Sep 4, 2013 10:59 PM

Nnamdi was offered jerseys by several defensive linemen under the same arrangement. #94, #96, #98, and #99, to be specific. Had to pass on them due to uniform regulations.

  24. db3300 says: Sep 4, 2013 11:05 PM

Can someone remind me what Nnamdi has accomplished in the last 3 years (some might say ever) to afford him the right to have the number he wants? 30+ year old CBs are littered along the NFL as it is. I would keep the number and let the scrub wallow in it.

  25. nitro276 says: Sep 4, 2013 11:09 PM

Aso made his name with the Raiders wearing 21. Wearing 24 with the Eagles, Aso was beyond horrible. He should offer Frank Gore $21,000 for 21.

  26. mikeinsanfran says: Sep 4, 2013 11:16 PM

I guess asking Gore for #21 (His Raider number for 8 years) was out of the question.

  28. Eli on Injured Reserve says: Sep 4, 2013 11:38 PM

Why should Asomugha worry about what number he wears when he’ll never see the field? Washed up has-been.

    Dixon is a true competitor.

Year in and year out he plays with an intensity of a starting RB but has been limited to Special Teams and 4th quarter short yardage situations. He never complains and always competes, I am glad he wears the Red and Gold with pride.

    GO NINERS!!!!!

  31. newagerocker says: Sep 4, 2013 11:43 PM

Maybe a new # would do him some good.

  32. granadafan says: Sep 4, 2013 11:54 PM

Three years from now when Dixon is broke, he’s going to regret not taking the 24K.

  33. moss49thteam says: Sep 4, 2013 11:55 PM

This exemplifies just how out of proportion the NFL actually is to the common every day Joe.

If you told me that you would pay me an extra 24 grand to wear a suit everyday to work I would have to jump at the offer.

The kid at the local fast food burger joint has to wear a tie for minimal wage. Tell that kid you will give him 24 grand to add a suit coat and I will guarantee you the answer would be yes.

I am willing to bet that you could ask 100 of the players that got cut this week to wear 6.9 and they would all respond with…. so I made the team?

  34. edelmanfanclub says: Sep 4, 2013 11:57 PM

Some of these guys have sentimental attachments to numbers, I don’t find it weird but 24000 is a lot to turn down, maybe he think he can squeeze some more out of him. Shoot for the moon Dixon.

Asomugha, after your stint with the Eagles, you’re not going to the Hall of Fame anyway. Save your money.

  37. warnocker says: Sep 5, 2013 12:12 AM

Dixon used to Run through everyone in the SEC, sucks the 9ers aren’t using him more

  38. treesloth16 says: Sep 5, 2013 12:17 AM

High Fidelity, ah one of my favorite movies…. John Cusack was so young, and this movie was a springboard for Jack Black’s career.

  39. bennyb82 says: Sep 5, 2013 12:25 AM

“24K for home and 24k for the away jersey and I will think about. Plus, you will be depositing it in my bank of choice. I am very comfortable in this jersey. Probably as you are too. Should my play on the field begin to deteriorate due to the exchange (based on previous stat averages) please read the following carefully. I am adding a clause that states that for every int or fumble recovery you earn, I earn 1000 dollars as long as u continue to play with that jersey. If you decide to change numbers again, the jersey will go to the open market and you will not get to sell it.”

  40. staffordsyear says: Sep 5, 2013 12:31 AM

What does Asomugha shop at the dollar store too?.. cheap arse.

  41. cipha17 says: Sep 5, 2013 12:45 AM

  49. bullsonparade2399 says: Sep 5, 2013 7:27 AM

Dixon should sell the jersey and get some of that money that Asomugha stole from the Eagles!

  50. therealtrenches says: Sep 5, 2013 7:34 AM

I suppose this means he will be eating his lunches in the car again, huh?

NA should worry more about adapting his game to his deteriorating skill set.

  51. uncletuna says: Sep 5, 2013 7:52 AM

Dixon should hold out for 100K and a steak dinner…

  52. jayniner says: Sep 5, 2013 1:50 PM

You would think with Asomugha’s past, he wouldn’t want to be associated with the #24 and get a fresh start with a new number…

  53. raiderapologist says: Sep 5, 2013 10:05 PM

Tracy Porter is pissed. He didn’t even get $24 from Chuck Woodson for his number.
