Asomugha tries and fails to buy jersey No. 24 for $24,000

Nnamdi Asomugha has made tens of millions of dollars in his NFL career. Anthony Dixon has made about $1 million. So when Asomugha arrived in San Francisco and wanted the No. 24 jersey Dixon already wore for the 49ers, Asomugha figured he could buy Dixon off.

But it didn’t work.

Dixon told CSNBayArea.com that he and Asomugha discussed the matter, and Asomugha thought $24,000 would be a fair price for No. 24. Dixon, however, decided that wasn’t enough.

“We tried to go $24K for 24, but I told him, ‘No, I’m going to keep my 24,’” Dixon said.

But Asomugha may still up his offer. And Dixon told Asomugha, “I’m not ready to sell it, yet,” with the “yet” implying (as fans of the movie High Fidelity know) that Dixon may eventually be willing to sell the number.

So Asomugha may still end up with No. 24 on his jersey when the 49ers open the season on the Sunday. He’ll just have to spend more than $24,000.
