Cam Newton realizes desire to be a captain

In May, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton said that he wanted to be a team captain.

Coach Ron Rivera announced Thursday that Newton got what he wanted when he announced the names of the team’s six captains. Newton’s name was on the list and Rivera said he likes the way Newton is developing.

“I’m excited about who he’s becoming,” Rivera said, via David Newton of ESPN.com. “Last year, you could see he was growing. Cam is still growing, but he’s also a little more mature, a little more comfortable, a little more savvy. He’s learned a lot of things, and he can do those things that can help us, that can give us an opportunity to win football games.”

While there have been questions and criticisms about his leadership, the biggest obstacle to Newton becoming captain seemed to be the presence of tackle Jordan Gross and wide receiver Steve Smith. Newton was able to move into the role without displacing either one, however, because Rivera changed the way the team picked its captains this year. Instead of having five captains, Rivera went with the league-maximum of six, and named the team’s six leading vote-getters regardless of position rather than having two from the offense, two from the defense and one from special teams.

Center Ryan Kalil, linebacker Thomas Davis and linebacker Luke Kuechly are the other captains.

  1. sucrightoff: If you’re going to bash our guy, at least get the facts straight. The touchdown in question made the score 20-7, with about 20 minutes left in the game, and it was an attempt (albeit a failed attempt) to get his team going. Just because that’s as close as they ever got in the game doesn’t change the situation AT THE TIME. And unlike your Sucs, we haven’t lost any games by 30 in the last 2 years.

  2. I hope this guy figures it out. He’s got the ability and he’s durable unlike other mobile QBS like Vick and RG3. Something about him rubs me the wrong way…mabye its the whole Auburn scam thing. I think he’s a beast but that doesnt always equate to talent/wins.

  3. Cam Newton? A captain? But but but NOOOOOO! Haven’t you seen him wearing towels on his head on ESPN! HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE!?!?!?!?!

DOES HE NOT KNOW TOWELS ARE FOR DRYING YOUR BODY? HOW CAN HE BE A CAPTAIN WHEN HE WEARS THEM ON HIS HEAD?!?!

    Lol. Suck it Espn.

    A) We have a Super Bowl, you do not.
    B) We do not have consecutive 2-8 starts, you do
    C) You schedule indicates a 2-8 start might be the best case scenario for the Panthers this year
    D) You’re a Panthers fan. Your greatest moment is your kicker kicking the ball out of bounds to hand New England a ring. Settle down.

  5. 66 touchdowns in two years.
Next 3 are going to be hung on the Seahawks.

Not a seahawks fan but try 40 TDS in two years. 29 picks too.

    _ _ _ _

Think he was going for passing plus rushing TD’s:

    40 Passing TD’s
    22 Rushing TD’s
    62 Total TD’s

  7. Dennis Allen: those 22 rushing touchdowns actually did happen, and were worth six points each.
Bucsrightoff: when Trent Dilfer and Shaun King are your qb options, of course you’re going to run a lot. Lets wait and see what Shula can do with some real talent.

  8. About the towel……..anybody ever hear of a fellow by the name of Michael Jordan? No one ever referred to him as sulking when he did it! And, as for Cam “begging” to be Captain, he was asked by a reporter if he wanted to be Captain. It’s sort of like being asked, “Would you like to be a millionaire?”. He would have had to be a fool to have said “No”. People, please! Stop making yourself look foolish because you don’t like a guy!

  9. he’s statistically had one of the best opening two years of any qb. He’s a good player and with the attention on him from the public, he should be made a captain so the team can tranfer that attention to him to pressure him to improve and lead
