Antoine Winfield said he was ready to retire.

Not everyone believes him.

While coach Leslie Frazier sent the former cornerback a congratulatory text, no official approach has been made from the team. But that’s not stopping Vikings safety Jamarca Sanford from lobbying.

“I will most definitely call him and try and talk him out of retirement,” Sanford said, via the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “I’m pretty sure Coach Frazier isn’t going to call him or nobody at the top [of the organization] is going to call him. But I’m for sure going to reach out to him and see what he’s thinking.”

Sanford said he has no doubt a healthy Winfield could still play at a high level, after 14 years in the NFL.

“As long as you’ve got a healthy 26 [Winfield’s number], you’ve got something there,” Sanford said. “Things didn’t work out in Seattle for him. He would fit back right in here with no problem.”

Of course, Winfield was dealing with a sore knee in Seahawks camp this summer, so that part of the equation can’t be considered a given for the 36-year-old.
