Ray Lewis declined invitation to attend tonight’s game

As the Ravens prepare for their first ever regular-season game without linebacker Ray Lewis on the team, one teammate wasn’t quite ready to proceed without Lewis around.

Sal Paolantonio of ESPN reports that Ravens running back Ray Rice invited Lewis to attend the game and join the team on the sidelines, but that Lewis declined.

Per Paolantonio, Lewis passed because of his post-football focus on his family.

Lewis will still be making an appearance, to the likely chagrin of Broncos fans.  Earlier this week, the NFL announced that 32 former NFL players — one per team — will appear in a video counting down to kickoff.

The video, we’re told, consists of each player counting off one of the 32 seconds before kickoff.  For the Ravens, the player is Ray Lewis.  For the Broncos, it’s Shannon Sharpe.

Doing the honors with the “one” to end the countdown is, we’re told, not Shannon Sharpe but Ray Lewis.

And they won’t be booing, they’ll be chanting LEWWWWWWWWis.

  1. In possibly related news the NFL has announced that the endzones will be painted “Baltimore” and “Ravens”, there will be a Ravens logo on the middle of the field and Baltimore season ticket holders will be allowed to claim seats to the game before Broncos ticket holders.

  2. for all you Ray Lewis haters, that erstwhile murderer George Zimmerman has been ticketed for speeding twice.

  3. It would be more of a story if the game was in Baltimore and he declined. Perhaps he will attend next week? Super Bowl winners usually raise a flag at their stadium in their first home game of the season which is supposed to be Week 1.

I can’t stand this guy and what he “stands” for.
He knows what he did and will pay one day, now
for the love of the game and it’s fans, never and I mean never mention his name again. Ever!

  5. The NFL should do something like the olympics and put a football at the away team’s stadium and have people run with it all the way to the stadium of the first game. They could raise money for charity and help promote active an active lifestyle.

  6. Haters gonna hate while the ravens were able to celebrate so being a steeler fan I saw we’ll done. Murderers row went right thru Denver last year and all they could do is take a knee…. Ouch

  7. If the Broncos organization doesn’t care for the way the Super Bowl champion Ravens are being promoted in Denver, maybe they should keep a closer eye on Jacoby Jones this season.

  8. Even Ray Lewis knows he doesn’t want to be ringside to witness the beginning of the end for the Ravens…

I’m betting it’ll be sometime in the third quarter before Flacco finally comes to grips with the reality of what exactly happened in the off-season…

  9. At 1st I was hoping he would go but I am glad he declined. It is time for us to get past the “Ray Lewis’ Ravens” stage, because he is retired. Somebody else needs to lead the team, most likely Suggs & Flacco. And even though I’ll miss his pre-game speeches,it’s time for us to move on. Bye Bye Ray, see you on ESPN(even though I wont watch it).

  10. Ravens = Stolen Cleveland Football Team

Ravens fans will themselves into believing that this fact is false. Maybe it is because of the irony involved with Baltimore having a franchise stolen from them a decade earlier. Ozzie Newsome was a player and front office guy for the Cleveland Browns. Art Modell was the owner of the Cleveland Browns. The Ravens’ draft picks in the first draft under the Ravens name were earned from the record that the Cleveland Browns achieved the year before. If you spraypaint a pumpkin purple, it is still a pumpkin.

The “one” should have gone to the home team.

Funny how the NFL doesn’t understand that, but loves to talk the experience for fans in the stadium

    WRONG!
Not a fan of either team, but the Ravens are the champs…and they got burned out of their home field for the opening game. giving them the last second is no big deal.

  12. I am surprised that this ass clown can pass up this opportunity to be in the spotlight in person! Of course we will be treated to him as a commentator since his “last ride” will never end!

  13. He will attend week 3 at the Bank against the Texans when the Greatest of All Time get’s inducted into the 2012 world champion’s Ring of Honor.

Ray’s smart enough to know it’s time to move on, he’s done EVERYTHING he can for the Ravens!

So are the Jets, Jaguars, Texans, Browns 2.0, Lions and Saints. I do not see any of them proclaiming a dynasty.

  15. He wasn’t invited to the game. NFL was afraid that he’d run out at the end of every play and pile on.

who is counting for the Jags or Panthers.

Hmm…Mark Brunell and Jake Delhomme? Brunell took the Jags to the AFC Championship early on in this true expansion team’s birth and Jake Delhomme took the Panthers to the Super Bowl, another true expansion team.

He lied to police, that’s ALL he did. The two guys that stood trial for murder were both found guilty by means of self defense. Do a little research before you just spout off hatred…

  18. Ray is now a journalist-if he wants credibility and long term employment in that field he has to behave in as neutral a manner as possible. It’s called being professional.

HAHAHA! Two bad you’ve only been to two.

Call me when you’ve earned five championships.

    HTTR!

  21. Look at all the attention Ray Lewis gets when he does absolutely NOTHING! Maybe if he came to the game, you jealous Steelers’ fans would have something to blow out of your pieholes, but he’s not even coming. Face it, he doesn’t care about you. It’s over. Your fawning all over him is embarassing.

  22. The two guys that stood trial for murder were both found guilty by means of self defense. Do a little research before you just spout off hatred…

Do some research yourself. The two guys that Ray turned on were acquitted.

  23. I love reading the comments more then the article. They are amusing to me. Especially when its about the Ravens. Everyone wants to call Ray Lewis a murderer and the team will be lost without him. He was just one out of 53 players on the roster and he got injured a lot his last few years. I also see comments on how Flacco sucks blah blah. Flacco tied Joe Montana’s playoff record for most TD passes and least INTs in a playoff run and he did it without Jerry Rice. Boldin was and still is a mediocore WR thats why he was cut from the team. Ravens been to the playoffs 5 straight years and the dynasty is just starting.

  24. I will never, ever forget how he said God told him to put his hands on that kick returner during the Super Bowl…and then that guy runs it back for a TD. How egomaniacal. He’s crazy.

Ah cfeely there is a little matter of a white suit that is still missing. I know in Baltimore lying is acceptable, but the rest of the country expects more from their heroes . Just fade away Ray just fade away like your white suit.

  26. I find all the hatred for Ray Lewis hilarious. Its what we are as a society though, when you’re on top people want to knock you down. Its all good though. The mindless jokes are the same every year. Anyone with half a brain knows he didn’t kill anyone which makes those that make the statement comedic in their idiocy. So keep em coming and the rest of us will keep laughing…at you not with you.

  27. I think everyone just needs to “Limit yourself with the number of women you see. And strap up!”

    Ray Lewis = MORON!

I disagree. The reason this is the first game is because the Ravens are the defending champions. The Broncos happen to be their first opponent and it isn’t a Ravens home game simply because of a schedule conflict with the Orioles.

  30. For all you guys who had Ray Lewis because he wasn’t proven guilty for a murder, you’ll be able to turn your attention to Hernandez in a year or two. No way he gets convinced without murder weapon.

Yeah, and all OJ did wsa run from the police, all Zimmerman did was “defend himself” after starting a fight, and all Casey Anthony did was go to a party while her daughter was murdered. No one believes them except for some very stupid/ highly gullible jurors.

The fact that you have the words raven and unitas in your name highlights the fact that Ravens fans are so hypocritical. Face it……the Browns were stolen away from Cleveland and taken to Baltimore from where the Colts were stolen and taken to Indianapolis.

  33. “Per Paolantonio, Lewis passed because of his post-football focus on his family.”

Which of his 6 kids in 4 families is he focusing on?

I’ll bet his was just “doing the work of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

    Pathetic P.O.S. of a man.

  34. Only thing I’ve learned is that if you’re famous, do not ever get accused of anything because it doesn’t matter if you did or didn’t do it.

Public opinion is going to ride it regardless.

but it equals out in their favor that they are usually found not guilty whether they did it or not also.

I’m sure they will take that tradeoff.

If it were Ray Lewis taxi driver he would have been under the jail.

  36. I get all the Ravens & Ray Lewis hatred…it’s part of being a fan & it’s all good.

BUT, any of you who believe that Ray Lewis stabbed someone – or that he was even accused of stabbing anyone – is simply exposing themselves as ignorant sheep. He was accused of murder, not of stabbing anyone…and if you don’t know the difference, go and look it up. Otherwise, you are simply repeating what you heard, not what you know…and that makes you ignorant sheep. Seriously, take 10 minutes, go online & learn the truth…or maybe you should just shut the up!!! It really is sad how easily people are misled by the media, rumors, and their own desire to believe what they want to believe, as opposed to the truth…

Not a Ravens or Browns fan, but I feel for both cities’ fans for getting screwed by their respective NFL teams. However, the Baltimore fans really got it from the NFL when the promise of the next expansion team that was supposed to go to their city went elsewhere.

Yeah, very jealous,! I remember our first two SB wins, they happened back to back, not ten years removed from one another. Last place? Doubtful. Probably a stretch to even make a playoff run this year for the Steelers. However, it is going to be fun watching the Ravens fall off the perch along the way this year. Hey, if you’re a real Baltimore fan, you can still root for Indy, ya know, hedge your bets!

  41. He was smart not to go, it was brutal enough to watch it on TV, the absolute trouncing that Baltimore took. Manning is incredible at 37, made the ravens look like school kids in a dirt lot. I hope they are better than that, because that was just plain embarrassing. If that is who the Ravens are, it is going to be a long year.
