Weather delays start of NFL season

In the grand scheme of things, 15 minutes is no big deal.

But if you woke up the kids on Christmas morning, had them run down to the tree, see all the presents arranged, and then told them, “Now sit patiently for 15 minutes before you open any,” well, that would be downright cruel.

Sometimes Mother Nature is downright cruel: Because of lightning in Denver, kickoff of tonight’s Ravens-Broncos game has been delayed by 15 minutes.

So, football fans, the offseason is ending 15 minutes later than expected. But considering the half-hour delay because of the power outage during the Super Bowl, the offseason actually started 30 minutes later than expected. Which means the offseason was still 15 minutes shorter than expected.

Are you ready for some football?

UPDATE 8:55 p.m. ET: Now the delay is more than 15 minutes. No definitive timetable has been given.

UPDATE TWO 9:06 p.m. ET: OK, we’re really about to start. Are you finally ready for some football?

“Are you ready for some football?”

    “Not sure.”

  4. seahawksteven777 says: Sep 5, 2013 8:48 PM

Stupid, boring Baseball is too blame for this. They just can’t get it through their heads that Football is number 1.

  5. wearethesteelers says: Sep 5, 2013 8:48 PM

This is ridiculous. Do you know the likelihood of someone getting struck with lightning? Let’s go!

  6. aaroncurryisbust says: Sep 5, 2013 8:49 PM

What’s a little lightning? Roger Goodell’s sissifying the league.

  7. tolan04 says: Sep 5, 2013 8:49 PM

A delay favors no one. Lets play football oh yeah I forgot its the no fun league.

  8. blackandbluedivision says: Sep 5, 2013 8:51 PM

This is what happens when you mix Football and Ryan Seacrest.

  9. nemesder says: Sep 5, 2013 8:51 PM

    Blue balls…

  11. youallrfools says: Sep 5, 2013 8:51 PM

ummmmm. I’m not a meteorologist but can read a radar and look at the sky… Not seeing any “severe lightening storm.” Something else is delaying this.

  12. grandpoopah says: Sep 5, 2013 8:51 PM

Please fire Goodell. This is insane.

  13. egomaniac247 says: Sep 5, 2013 8:53 PM

Maybe a harbinger of the Superbowl to be played in New Jersey in February?

  14. wearethesteelers says: Sep 5, 2013 8:53 PM

We would’ve played through a hurricane 30 years ago.

  15. montanapredator says: Sep 5, 2013 8:53 PM

So leave the fans in the stands to get fried but keep the players and coaching staff safe in the bunkers?? this is insane. Play in the rain, snow and dead of night. NFL New York decides this?? Play the game and put a flagpole on Goddell in the stands.

  16. 80sbroncofan says: Sep 5, 2013 8:53 PM

Did anyone even show up for the orioles game?

  17. thepftpoet says: Sep 5, 2013 8:54 PM

The National Sissy League needs to start the game…a little rain is not going to hurt anyone

  18. captainwisdom8888 says: Sep 5, 2013 8:54 PM

Mother Nature is clearly not a fan of these teams. I bet that sick and twisted girl is a Jets fan…

  19. yanksbills says: Sep 5, 2013 8:54 PM

    15 minutes?

  20. strokinmyego says: Sep 5, 2013 8:55 PM

This is the almighty one showing his displeasure of not having his favorite football player in the NFL.

  21. bennyb82 says: Sep 5, 2013 8:56 PM

If there is so much concern about lightning, why are analysts on the field and thousands and thousands in the stands…

  22. Kolo Jezdec says: Sep 5, 2013 8:56 PM

Ray Lewis thinks this storm is suspicious…

  23. it's all bs says: Sep 5, 2013 8:56 PM

it’s a conspiracy right Ray Ray???

Season starts with lightning delay and will end with snow delay.

  28. taintedsaints2009 says: Sep 5, 2013 8:58 PM

should have been in baltimore…you know, because the superbowl champion opens the season at home.

it’s like goodell is delusional and believes the broncos won the superbowl anyways.

  29. steelcurtainn says: Sep 5, 2013 8:58 PM

This isn’t looking good for the ravens.

  30. indywilson40 says: Sep 5, 2013 8:58 PM

Go Coats!!! Win the Super Bow !!!! Chuckstrong!!!!

  31. thereisfootballwestofjersey says: Sep 5, 2013 8:59 PM

Ryan Seacrest totally jinxed the deal. What kind of NFL employee thinks it would be a good idea to have Ryan Seacrest announce the start of the season? Epic FAIL

  32. blackandbluedivision says: Sep 5, 2013 8:59 PM

rumor has it Tim Tebow as seen outside the stadium Tebowing to get the last word.

  33. jimthebuilder27 says: Sep 5, 2013 8:59 PM

Our society is so soft! Its not all Roger Goodell’s fault guys!

Heck they cancel school when its below zero now. I remember waiting for the bus in that weather!

  34. crownofthehelmet says: Sep 5, 2013 8:59 PM

I think this all ties together – Lewis declining invite, deer antler spray raid, delay of another Ravens game. Conspiracy, right Ray?

  35. patfic15 says: Sep 5, 2013 9:01 PM

    The pussification of Murica continues.

  36. herrcules13 says: Sep 5, 2013 9:02 PM

Drew Brees would like an explanation.

  37. themagicman1223 says: Sep 5, 2013 9:02 PM

Baseball…. Asport where the rich will always have the upper hand. No parity amongst the league and the star players always sign with the big clubs. Did I mention the draft is in the middle of the season? The mlb is terrible.

  38. ampatsisahypocrite says: Sep 5, 2013 9:02 PM

They did it to the Ravens AGAIN! Why clearly the NFL is trying to disrupt the new unstoppable Joe Flacco offense with a convenient storm front! Don’t laugh, there’s some pretty powerful weather-controlling machinery up there in Alaska or Oregon or wherever, and clearly they’re not afraid to use it!

    Right, Ray Lewis?

  39. infectorman says: Sep 5, 2013 9:02 PM

    Keef Urban = pure Bubblegum

  40. hooterdawg says: Sep 5, 2013 9:03 PM

Ray Lewis will be tweeting that the game was delayed by the NFL as a conspiracy against the Ravens.

  41. footballnut2011 says: Sep 5, 2013 9:04 PM

I smell a 3 hour snow delay at the superbowl this year. The NFL is a joke.

  42. whyamiacowboysfanagain says: Sep 5, 2013 9:05 PM

Postponed the start of the Opening Night due to potential thunder? WTF? Big time hits basically eliminated from the game. $10,000 fines for non dress code compliance worn during pre-game?Phanton pass interference calls. Outrageous PSL prices? A Commissioner who clears $30 mil annually? What happened to this 1nce great game?

  43. hartleechung says: Sep 5, 2013 9:06 PM

The real question is “What’s up with Dan Patrick’s hair????”.

  46. bleedgreen says: Sep 5, 2013 9:09 PM

Ray Lewis what are your thoughts ?

  48. peytonwantsaflag says: Sep 5, 2013 9:10 PM

I don’t get it, they’ll schedule a Super Bowl in NY in February but delay this for a little weather. (And if the lightening is so dangerous for the players why are the people still in the stands?)

  49. salsashark2004 says: Sep 5, 2013 9:10 PM

The O’s game is actually quite well attended.

  50. nomoreseasontix says: Sep 5, 2013 9:13 PM

They’re worried about lightning, yet Dan Patrick and Co. are on the sideline?
    Holding umbrellas?
Wouldn’t the lightning strike a light tower or something first?

  51. kibblesnvick says: Sep 5, 2013 9:14 PM

    More like 45 mins.

  52. nolajoe says: Sep 5, 2013 9:18 PM

Wait until you see the weather in the Meadowlands in February. Sheer genius!

  53. ricardocabeza says: Sep 5, 2013 9:32 PM

What a riot! Goodell’s overhyped season opening torpedoed by something the long arm of
Roger cannot control. Big $$ can’t buy everything. Remember when the game came on, they kicked the ball and we had a football game. Enough blowhard extravaganza, it is a game.

  54. jeffperk says: Sep 5, 2013 9:37 PM

No weather delay in Baltimore. Have to wonder about Denver, 1st the whining about the Flacvco posters & then a delay for some showers. Any meteorologist could tell the storms were to the west & moving north. Denver is not a tough city!
