Andrew Whitworth not practicing early on Friday

Cincinnati Bengals Andrew Whitworth and Domata Peko celebrate touchdown against Pittsburgh Steelers in NFL football game in Pittsburgh Reuters

Bengals left tackle Andrew Whitworth, who sat out practice on Wednesday and Thursday with a knee injury, was not participating in on-field team activities in the portion of practice open to media on Friday, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com.

According to Hobson, Whitworth was present, but working on the side of the field, and he was not wearing his jersey.

Whitworth, 31, has not missed a game since 2008. Anthony Collins will start in his place if he is unable to play in Sunday’s regular-season opener against Chicago.

A sixth-year pro from Kansas, Collins has started 18 regular-season games for Cincinnati since 2008.

“He’s had a really good camp,” Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton said of Collins on Wednesday, according to the club. “He’s a player that’s been around for a while and understands everything we’re doing. So I’m really comfortable with A.C. out there.”

UPDATE 4:00 p.m. EST: Whitworth is listed as doubtful on the club’s Friday injury report.

For the Bears fans that may be smiling hold your giggles in 08 he played on the left against Harrison and others and did wonderfully. In 09 he played on the right for 8 games when we swept the AFC North. His feet are quicker than Whitworth but Whit may be more technically sound. Dude has a mean streak is physical and this is NOT a rookie stepping in. Peppers had better not think this will be easy or the fanbase could be severely disappointed. Collins can start on on 20+ teams right now! Here is another chance to show the league…WHO DEY!

Collins is a better backup than people might think. As a rookie, he was the one who filled in for those games Whitworth missed in ’08, holding at bay guys like Dwight Freeney. But facing Julius Peppers will be a tough ‘welcome back’ party.

“He’s had a really good camp, his arm is way stronger than mine, everyone’s is” quarterback Andy Dalton said.

No matter how confident Bengal fans are of Anthony Collins keep in mind he’s been a backup for a reason. Now this backup will get introduced to Julius Peppers. Sorry but this guy has no chance.

Puzzling why no teams, especially the Steelers, snatched this guy up in FA.
He has done a good job when given the chance and now he is a mature vet anxious to show what he can do.

Our friend frozenjoe criticizes Andy Dalton and yet, were Dalton on Joe’s team, he would clearly be the best QB they’ve had in about a decade. But hey, it’s not every franchise that can turn a first and a second into a fifth.

How’d those high-priced ‘big-armed’ QB’s like JaMarcus Russell and Carson Palmer work out for ya recently ‘Joe’ ?
