Anthony Spencer’s not too confident about playing

Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer suffered a setback in his recovery from knee surgery recently, but said he remained hopeful that he’d be able to play against the Giants on Sunday night.

More time has passed, however, and Spencer missed practice once again on Friday. He still hasn’t practiced since the surgery and his optimism has dropped as a result.

“I mean there is a possibility,” Spencer said, via Rainer Sabin of the Dallas Morning News. “But I really haven’t done too much this week so I don’t feel very confident. We’ll see.”

No one’s expecting to see Spencer on the field, which will leave the Cowboys with a makeshift group of players on the defensive line to kick off the season. Coach Jason Garrett was asked about how they’ll make it work and fell back on a variation of going to war with the army you have instead of the army you want.

“You just kind of work with the guys we have,” Garrett said, via Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “We’re excited about the group we have. You’d like to have them together for longer, but that’s the nature of this league. You’ve just got to make do with what you have and go forward. Excited to see those guys play and take advantage of their opportunity.”

Preseason’s the time to see guys down the depth char take advantage of their opportunities and it’s over so we’re not quite buying the excitement level that Garrett professes for the likes of George Selvie and Nick Hayden as starting defensive linemen.
