Jim Schwartz says the Lions’ safeties are as good as any in the NFL

Louis Delmas, Glover Quin AP

Lions coach Jim Schwartz loves his safeties.

Schwartz said Friday that Detroit’s starting safeties, Louis Delmas and Glover Quin, can cover receivers, cover tight ends, play the run and basically do anything that any team would ever want its safeties to do.

“If we can keep that pair of safeties on the field, they can be as good as anybody in the NFL,” Schwartz said. “Hard to mismatch us. Harder we can match tight ends. We can matchup wide receivers. Both guys can play in the box. Both guys are good in the deep part of the field. Both of them are good tacklers. Have good range. It’s definitely an advantage for defense to have two safeties like that.”

In Delmas’s case, that part about keeping him on the field is a pretty big “if.” Delmas has been a bit like former Colts safety Bob Sanders: very good when he’s 100 percent, but hurt so often that we rarely see him at 100 percent.

But if the Lions can get 16 games from both Delmas and Quin, Schwartz has ever reason to be 100 percent confident in his safeties.

We’ll see how good they are when they have AP running full steam ahead at em.

  2. lks311 says: Sep 7, 2013 9:47 AM

He’s not wrong, but the fact that Delmas can’t stay on the field makes this a silly statement. They’re not, because he can’t.

Delmas tackling attempts on the MVP have always been so cute and laughable . Glover Quinn got ran over by AD in Houston last year as well. May the sharwtz be with them . MVP nation

It’s just too bad Jim Swartz is an absolute moron of a coach or this team may actually have a chance at winning something.

can’t wait to see the packer offense light up that secondary.

Be it packer fan, viking or bear…consensus is detroit will always be a joke. I’m sure they miss Tampa Bay the most!

“Jennings,Patterson,Wright,Simpson,Carlson and Rudolph…oh, and a little something called AD….good luck with that kitties….”

Oh yeah, and don’t forget, Christian Ponder at quarterback! LoL! Until you get a real qb, you don’t stand a chance tomorrow.

  13. texanfan53 says: Sep 7, 2013 10:40 AM

You missed on thing on Quin….he bites EASY on pump fakes. Go watch the Texans/Pats playoff game and the regular season game. Brady was just toying with him towards the end.

  14. footballguru205 says: Sep 7, 2013 10:45 AM

You guys are out of your minds if you think Minnesota has a shot of beating Detroit. MIN is guaranteed to finish last in their division. Last year they had to have someone run for 2K just to sneak into the playoffs. Lions are much improved this time around. Lions will win easy. Keep bashing the lions like its 1990s and 2000s you fools.

  15. ialwayswantedtobeabanker says: Sep 7, 2013 10:50 AM

Tampa Bay now has some good ones who might beg to differ.

  16. rockbottom37 says: Sep 7, 2013 10:52 AM

Ponder may not have time to even look at the safties downfield

  17. iluvbears says: Sep 7, 2013 11:05 AM

Hey Schwartz! Let’s see how your safeties do trying to stop AP, Kyle Rudolph, Greg Jennings, Jerome Simpson, Jarius Wright, John Carlson & Cordarrelle Patterson tomorrow before making such a bold proclamation.

  18. blunt4rctrauma says: Sep 7, 2013 11:07 AM

Glover Quinn was abused so hard by Aaron Hernandez last year, I heard he changed his name to Odin.

  19. rockbottom37 says: Sep 7, 2013 11:14 AM

Lol…no one is talking about Calvin Johnson going against a rookie DB…that should be illegal.

  20. mnomalley says: Sep 7, 2013 11:19 AM

Minnesota has a RB run for 2000 yards they win 10 games and make the playoffs.
Detroit has a WR almost nearly get 2000 yards they win 4 games.
I think we know who the better team is here.
Detroit is going to try to have Reiff handle Jared Allen tomorrow, ya good luck with that.

Actually it will probably be Chris Cook on him tomorrow and he has done fairly well against him in the past.

  22. rockbottom37 says: Sep 7, 2013 11:22 AM

Formula vs. Vikings is easy …get out to good early lead …takes AP out of the gm and make ponder beat you…we all know that won’t happen

  23. rockbottom37 says: Sep 7, 2013 11:32 AM

Obviously u don’t watch the gms…winfield use to cover Johnson

  24. johnnycash19 says: Sep 7, 2013 11:35 AM

If I were a Viking fan, I think id rather have Tebow than Ponder at QB

  25. rockbottom37 says: Sep 7, 2013 11:39 AM

Vikings fans are dellusional…they don’t understand that AP is the Vikings…let’s see how many purple ppl morons are talking smack at 4:15

  26. mnjoemama says: Sep 7, 2013 11:40 AM

Chris cook lines up against megatron not the x man he’s our nickel . Difference between vikings n lions is …….vikings actually know football and the players at the positions . Chris cook locked down Calvin last year too on way to sweeping yas. MVP nation

  27. rockbottom37 says: Sep 7, 2013 11:50 AM

    On Sunday

  28. myhornispurple says: Sep 7, 2013 11:53 AM

I’m vikings fan but I do think lions have a decent chance. Mainly due to fact that stafford hasn’t had time to get injured…yet.

  29. rockbottom37 says: Sep 7, 2013 11:59 AM

Reiff goes vs. The best DLine …his own in practice everyday and he held his own vs Allen last year when he came in for Backus he should be ok

  30. rockbottom37 says: Sep 7, 2013 12:07 PM

Everybody talking about Reiff like he is some rookie FA or something…he is a first round pick…has anyone even really seen him play yet to even know if he will be better or worse the Backus? Really?

  31. angrylionsfan says: Sep 7, 2013 12:09 PM

I’m placing my bet on Delmas getting injured again and missing time by week 6.

The man definitely improves the Defense when he’s on the field, but that just isn’t often enough.

  32. ninerswilldominatelikebefore says: Sep 7, 2013 1:17 PM

ahahaha schwartz is dilusional..4-12, he gets canned on black monday and back to drawing board lions but hey atleast you have a “””franchise””” qb ahahaha

  33. jochsner4 says: Sep 7, 2013 1:20 PM

@mnjoemama “Chris cook locked down Calvin last year too on way to sweeping yas.”

You do know this includes the second meeting where Calvin put up over 200 yards in one game, right? May have lost the game, but “locked down”? Far from it…

  34. joegann32003 says: Sep 7, 2013 1:22 PM

“good as any” when are people going to realize that is not a compliment? means those guys are as good as the worse guys

  35. staffordsyear says: Sep 7, 2013 1:51 PM

Some big talkers up in here before the game has even started.

  36. rockbottom37 says: Sep 7, 2013 2:06 PM

Don’t worry Vikings fans will disappear from talking smack at 4:15 on Sunday.

  37. rockbottom37 says: Sep 7, 2013 2:11 PM

I do think it will be a close gm though, I think the last six meetings between the teams have been decided by four points or less.

  38. rockbottom37 says: Sep 7, 2013 2:13 PM

As a Lions fan…if I had to bet vs. the spread ( Lions -5.5) I would pk Vikings.

  39. congas1 says: Sep 7, 2013 2:53 PM

vikes are a 1 trick pony fellas they need a QB
& J Allen is getting a little long in the tooth
lota downs lota snaps 6 wins this year next year

Apparently you have not been paying attention.

Chris Cook and Josh Robinson are the Vikings starting CBs. Rhodes, who has been excellent so far, is only the nickel/slot guy. Also, last time CJ matched up with Cook he was held to only 57 yards.

So yeah, maybe get your facts straight next time.

Cook was out with an injury that game. The last time CJ locked up against Cook, he only had 57 yards receiving.
