Raiders place Jared Veldheer on short-term injured reserve

The Raiders have placed left tackle Jared Veldheer on short-term injured reserve, the club said Saturday.

Veldheer suffered a triceps tear in August. To replace him on the roster, the Raiders promoted first-year offensive tackle Matt McCants from the practice squad.

Veldheer’s placement on injured reserve is not a surprise, considering his injury and the Raiders’ depth concerns at tackle entering the season opener at Indianapolis on Sunday. Rookie Menelik Watson, who was expected to start at left tackle in Week One, is out with a knee injury. Veteran right tackle Khalif Barnes will move to the left side, with Tony Pashos getting the call at right tackle. McCants, a sixth-round pick of the Giants in 2012, could be the top option off the bench at tackle on Sunday.

Veldheer is eligible to return to the playing field in Week Nine, when Oakland hosts Philadelphia on November 3.

Don’t like the Raiders, but hate seeing them lose such a big part of their team. Well, at least they will have the #1 pick next year, and when they pick the OT from Texas A&M that will give them two top-level tackles next year when Veldheer comes back.

    Still no QB though…

no doubt veldheer will be missed these weeks. Just hoping the rehab goes great, and he comes back stronger than ever.

    GO RAIDERS!

if they have the # pick next year I can assure they will not take jake matthews with it. Depending how qb’s play this year it will go Clowney, Bridgewater, or Lee

@dalcow Why would they take something that’s not a need right now? Not to mention Mathews shouldn’t be in the conversation for the #1 pick. It’s either Clowney or a QB.

Why does this team even exist. The team and its fans just need to disappear.

As long as the Raiders resign Veldheer they won’t be looking for another high round draft pick at tackle. With Watson in fold they should be fine. I just hope Veldheer can come back and stay healthy.
