The Jets offense has been the target of many a barb heading into this season, but they haven’t been the worst offense on the field at MetLife Stadium in the first quarter.
The Buccaneers offense has been a carnival of errors, culminating in a safety when quarterback Josh Freeman kicked the ball out of the back of the end zone following a mistimed snap by center Jeremy Zuttah. The snap seemed to come as a surprise to Freeman, who was penalized for kicking the ball away from Jets linebacker Antwan Barnes.
Barnes also has a sack and the Bucs were flagged for three penalties on their first series, including two delay of game calls coming out of a timeout called because of a problem with Freeman’s helmet.
The Jets offense got a first down on their first play when Geno Smith hit Jeremy Kerley for 26 yards. They then went with the Wildcat on second and third downs after a Smith scramble, one of which was an incompletion by Kerley, which was a surprise given Smith’s sharp first throw.
The Jets lead 2-0 halfway through the first quarter.
