Chiefs blow out the Jaguars

Kansas City Chiefs v Jacksonville Jaguars Getty Images

Either the Chiefs are a lot better than last year, or the Jaguars are every bit as bad as last year. Or maybe a little of both.

In a battle of the two teams with the two worst records in the NFL last season, the Chiefs gave their fans plenty of reasons to believe they’re going to turn things around this season, while the Jaguars turned in a terrible effort in a half-empty stadium.

On the Chiefs’ first drive, they went three-and-out and had the subsequent punt blocked for a safety. The Jaguars took an early 2-0 lead.

After that, it was all Chiefs. Quarterback Alex Smith and running back Jamaal Charles didn’t have many highlight-reel plays, but they methodically marched the offense down the field repeatedly. On defense, the Chiefs held the Jaguars’ offense in check all day. Kansas City won 28-2.

Jacksonville quarterback Blaine Gabbert was terrible, raising questions about how much longer the Jaguars can keep him as the starter. Gabbert completed 16 of 35 passes for 121 yards and two interceptions, and he eventually left the game in favor of Chad Henne, and Jacksonville may need to make that move permanently, or else they’re going to be playing for the right to have the first overall pick in next year’s draft.

But the Chiefs, the team with the first overall pick in this year’s draft looked good. It’s way too early to say the Chiefs are contenders, but it’s not too early to say they look a lot better than they did last year.

The Chiefs win the toilet bowl, congratulations to them. SMH.

There’s nothing else to say about Blaine Gabbert, nothing at all.

  2. jakec4 says: Sep 8, 2013 4:13 PM

You writers were crazy in thinking the Raiders would be worse than these jokers.

  3. claymatthewshairplugs says: Sep 8, 2013 4:13 PM

Wow Gabbert is absolutely pathetic as a starting QB. Jags need to bench him, not since Ryan Leaf have I seen someone this bad.

  4. jrebar88 says: Sep 8, 2013 4:16 PM

Chiefs fans need to chill, its the Jags. Your team still sucks. One real offensive drive. Final score wouldve been 14-2 if Jacksonville didnt gift wrap the field position.

  5. arrowhead816 says: Sep 8, 2013 4:18 PM

Go Chiefs!! Justin Houston, Tamba Hali, Poe, & Berry were balling today!!

  6. txraiderfan says: Sep 8, 2013 4:21 PM

For all of you who say “The Raiders are the worst team in the NFL,” I present exhibit one: Blaine Gabbert…

Actually, it sucks. I want to have J Clowney on the Raiders D-line next year, but it looks like he’ll be a Jag.

  7. sgtr0c says: Sep 8, 2013 4:22 PM

Did the Chief’s hire the Hawiian Punch guy as the head coach?

  8. mtheparrothead says: Sep 8, 2013 4:27 PM

Yeah we suck, but please don’t say the stadium was half empty. It only was after the half.

  9. nitro276 says: Sep 8, 2013 4:31 PM

Give it time….the Chiefs have fool’s gold at their head coach position.

  10. Smarterthanyou says: Sep 8, 2013 4:33 PM

    I said during OTA’s
I said again during Training Camp.
I said again suring the preseason
I am saying it again now!

Andy Reid is assembling a dynasty team that will take back the AFC West and dominate the league for the next decade.

Chiefs will be back in the playoffs.

There are still a couple of spots left on the bandwagon, better hurry up

    REMEMBER IN DECEMBER

  11. harrywarden15 says: Sep 8, 2013 4:39 PM

Jags, Tebow is available. Give him a call. At least the stadium would be more than half full.

  12. eviltwin007 says: Sep 8, 2013 4:41 PM

If the Jags win the Clowney sweepstakes, they might want to trade the pick off for multiple picks or pick a new QB instead

  13. kayakattack says: Sep 8, 2013 4:42 PM

Jags have just announced Teddy Bridgewater will be starting QB opening day 2014!

  14. Smarterthanyou says: Sep 8, 2013 4:51 PM

    What was that?????????

Sounds like the FILTHadelphia fans are saying …………….wait for it………………hold on………………..”I wish we had Andy back”

  15. themonkeyman says: Sep 8, 2013 4:56 PM

JaBustus is one of the only other QB’s worse than Gabbert. The Jags would be better off with Sanchez.

  16. xbox4wwe says: Sep 8, 2013 5:01 PM

As a Jags fan. This is going to be a long year. Whats worse is if they are number 1 in the draft I would love Clowney but the Jags need Bridgewater. Hell if need be draft Clowney with the #1 pick and then trade the rest of the draft to move back up and get Bridgewater. Come on April smh

  17. mrlaloosh says: Sep 8, 2013 5:01 PM

Can Goodell just give the whole Jacksonville team and organization a years suspension. My god what an awful team.

  18. dolphins4 says: Sep 8, 2013 5:07 PM

The Eagles fans and media are going to miss Andy Reid.

  19. blackhawks2010 says: Sep 8, 2013 5:08 PM

Chiefs are for real folks. Really.

  20. jbaxt says: Sep 8, 2013 5:10 PM

Clearly KC picked the better of the 2 tackles. Joekel gave up 2 sacks, couldn’t cut Hali on the interception and Charles was averaging 6 yards a carry. Jacksonville was clearly the lesser team but KC is clearly much better than their 2-14 record showed last year. Amazing what a QB, a HC, and a defense will do.

Too bad for the raiders, they have none of the above.

  21. denttlm says: Sep 8, 2013 5:18 PM

Gabbert wasn’t pulled, he left the game inside the 2:00 warning with a deep cut on his hand! As bad as Gabbert was he isn’t the only problem, joeckel looked like a late round pick giving up three sacks and the offensive and defensive lines were abused all day! Chiefs defensive is stacked with talent and they showed it today!

  22. jbaxt says: Sep 8, 2013 5:21 PM

Oh, and Jacksonville should start with -10 points just for having the worst helmets I’ve ever seen. It’s like Rudy’s girlfriend got ahold of them before a Notre Dame game and since they were short on paint they only painted half of them.

  23. jbaxt says: Sep 8, 2013 5:23 PM

Eric Winston wants to comment on how bad Jags fans are for cheering Gabbert’s injury… It’s just he’s not employed and has no microphone to speak in to(karma much). But I still think PFT should make a big deal out of it…

  24. nationalmediacansuckit says: Sep 8, 2013 5:24 PM

See this is why people who read this site based their misinformed opinions on b/c the stadium was not half empty. It was full until after the half when the game was clearly over. Obviously you didn’t watch the game in first half and are just throwing out the usually Jax tired lines to see if it sticks. Ridiculous.

  25. kcflake says: Sep 8, 2013 5:24 PM

Joetoronto the chiefs didn’t win the toilet bowl, they dominated. As a die hard chiefs fan, I am pumped about our team. After suffering through last year, there is np reason for us to chill. I am not saying they will win it all or anything, but we are a much better team than last year. Should be a much more enjoyable season for us chiefs fans. Go chiefs.

  26. raiderapologist says: Sep 8, 2013 5:26 PM

The Chiefs could easily double their win total from last season if they keep this up.

  27. dirtysouthironmen says: Sep 8, 2013 5:37 PM

Sure the Jags sucked bad today, I will admit that. But why do you flat out lie and say it was a half-empty stadium? It was not until mid-3rd/early 4th when it became half empty. One positive take-away, the Jags defense shut them down in the 2nd half.

  28. johninthewest says: Sep 8, 2013 5:45 PM

Did someone say that the Chiefs dominated? ? Those two words will never be used again this season. Chief fans excited of winning the 2013 toilet bowl. Charles will be lucky if he makes it healthy by game 4. He was hurt already in game 1??

  29. jjackwagon says: Sep 8, 2013 5:46 PM

Hey Trollonto, the toilet bowl will be played when the Chiefs go to the Black Stool and I expect the outcome to be close to the same. Or did you not watch your raiders lose today?

  30. jbaxt says: Sep 8, 2013 6:00 PM

Yes, the Jags defense was great in the 2nd half. When the game was over and KC turned it into a vanilla 5th pre-season game. Unfortunately for the Jags, KC left in their starting defense, and kept them scoreless. But in a lone bright spot, the Gabbert pass to Hali was spot on…

I also suppose Jags fans, as well as Joke’el, can stop saying they got the better tackle? Or are you just on the fence with that opinion now?

  31. yourmomsnewfriend says: Sep 8, 2013 6:20 PM

Meaningless game. What’s going to happen when the Chiefs play an actual NFL team?

  32. jredshoes says: Sep 8, 2013 6:27 PM

As a Chiefs fan it was a change to be on the giving end of an opening day blowout for a change. It is pretty obvious the fortunes of the two 2-14 teams are going to be totally different. I’m guessing the Philly haters won’t quit posting about AR until they are beaten in week 3. Kind of like the guys that talk about how bad their ex was after they’ve gotten dumped

  33. pinball123 says: Sep 8, 2013 6:48 PM

It amazes me as I read this comments how people call an NFL football game a “toilet bowl” – those same people should get out of their parents basement and do something challenging with their life rather than demeaning others…it’s pathetic – nobody says you have to think a team is good or bad – but the childishness and immaturity in some of these comments is pretty amazing…maybe you’ll win in one of the 16 fantasy leagues your in? Get a life.

  34. kingme30 says: Sep 8, 2013 7:35 PM

I love all the bitter Eagles fans hating on our new coach. Get over it, he is better without you…and you are not better off without him #worstfansinsports

  35. phloorioisanarcissist says: Sep 8, 2013 7:42 PM

Joe Toronto is the one of the biggest trolls on here. He’s on about every chief article I have bread spatting garbage. Some of you philly fans and raider/charger fans should do something to better yourselves then troll articles online everyday. The chiefs won and looked superb. They looked good in the third preseason game as well against the miners and all preseason. Had they kept their starters in on full fledge attack the second half, it would have been an absolute slaughter. Some people just can’t accept defeat or admit loss or that they’re wrong. Some just need to get a (life).

  36. dt58 says: Sep 8, 2013 7:59 PM

Absolutely pathetic the amount of haters who took the time to come here and comment. Nice to see all you non-Chief fans took the time to watch them play…or you’re just making uniformed comments out of jealousy

  37. cwk22 says: Sep 8, 2013 8:17 PM

What’s Mysteriously missing after Blaine’s bad performance? Excuses by thegreatgabbert. Wait for it, they will be here soon!

  38. pemory says: Sep 8, 2013 8:29 PM

Trust me, I’m no genius, but when Jax drafted Gabbert my reaction was “Who?!??” And three years later I’m still thinking that. How long are they going to act like he’s “The Future?”

  39. dolphins4 says: Sep 8, 2013 8:30 PM

The Phildelphia media and alot of fans wanted Gus Bradley to be head coach of the Eagles.

  40. jville808 says: Sep 8, 2013 8:34 PM

Don’t want to sound like I’m making excuses for the guy, but did anyone saying how terrible Gabbert looked even watch the game? It wasn’t so much that Gabbert had a bad game as it was the Jags O-Line was pretty much non existent in this game. Every time Gabbert took a snap, half the Chiefs defense was in his face. Terrible line play, on both sides of the ball really, for the Jags. They need to tighten up big time.

  41. therillest says: Sep 8, 2013 9:25 PM

    @Jville808

What I saw was a lot of Gabbert looking at the rush (or the phantom rush) and taking sacks or rushing throws. Gabbert was the reason this offense sucked! KC played man under press coverage pretty much the whole game (stopping run and quick stuff) and Gabbert wasn’t poised enough to stand in there, read the defense and beat it with his arm. He cant play…

Most Chiefs fans are thinking playoffs. You’re just hoping they finish better than a team that is carrying over 50 million in dead cap money this year. Didn’t they pretty much have the same defense last year? Oakland has nine new starters on defense, and had to open on the road against a playoff team from last year, not the team you had to split draft picks with. Go milk your goat.

  43. i10east says: Sep 8, 2013 10:37 PM

The stadium wasn’t ‘half empty’. Everbank Field has three areas that people seek from the relentless heat, the East Club, the west Club, and the Bud Light Party Zone.

  44. mrlaloosh says: Sep 9, 2013 12:39 AM

Instead of you morons arguing about whether the stadium
Was or was not half full, take a look at that team! Khan should move them to London by next Sunday. How embarrassing. TWO POINTS!!!! TWO!

  45. jjackwagon says: Sep 9, 2013 10:54 AM

    @ raiderapologist

So you are saying that losing to a playoff team is better than winning? For the sake of your team, I agree, please continue losing.
