Colin Kaepernick, Anquan Boldin star in 49ers’ season-opening win

i-1 AP

This time around, the Packers held up well against the 49ers’ rushing attack.

However, visiting Green Bay had no answer for San Francisco’s passing game in a 34-28 49ers victory on Sunday at Candlestick Park.

We’ll get to what this means in a second. But first, give the Packers their due.

All things considered, Mike McCarthy’s club didn’t lose much in defeat. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers looked like the blue-chip player he is, throwing for three touchdowns. Wide receiver Jordy Nelson had a wonderful game, catching seven passes for 130 yards and a score. The Packers led in the fourth quarter at San Francisco, and that’s a feat that’s going to take some doing this season.

The Packers can compete with the 49ers, and they could potentially beat them in a one-game playoff if they were in top form.

But let’s talk about San Francisco. The Packers shut down the Niners’ running game. Colin Kaepernick and Frank Gore didn’t run all over Green Bay this time.

It didn’t matter. On Sunday, the Packers couldn’t cope with 49ers’ passing game. Kaepernick shredded Green Bay for 412 yards passing and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Anquan Boldin hauled in 12 passes for 208 yards and a score in a special debut with his new club.

Some will talk about what may have been an officiating mistake in the second quarter, when Clay Matthews and Joe Staley were assessed off-setting penalties after a third-down sideline confrontation. According to Fox’s Mike Pereira, the actual result of the play should have a 4th-and-2 at the Green Bay 6-yard-line instead a replay of 3rd-and-6 from the Green Bay 10. On the next play, Kaepernick found Boldin for a touchdown.

If indeed a mistake were made, it’s an unfortunate one. But mistakes happen.

Here’s what doesn’t often happen: a team having as many ways to win as San Francisco has at its disposal. Shut down the run? Fine — Kaepernick’s passing will save the day. Want to stop the pass? You’ll have to deal with Gore, Kaepernick, Kendall Hunter and Co. And should a team have the skill to slow the 49ers’ offense in all phases  . . . well, there’s the matter of dealing with San Francisco’s defense, which is no slouch.

As season openers go, Packers-49ers was a spectacular one. Oh, the sheer skill on display Sunday.

And oh, the many ways the 49ers can give the opposition trouble these days.

Smith/Koepernick, Lambeau/Candlestick, regular season/playoffs, it really doesn’t matter, because the 49ers OWN Aaron Rodgers and the GB Packers! What is that like 3 or 4 in a row??

That’s gotta hurt the Packers pride, LOL!!! Not to worry, all the fans will make excuses for their loss.

  6. All-American Voltron says: Sep 8, 2013 8:07 PM

The Packers, Troy Aikman, and Joe Buck have been waiting eight months for Colin Koepernick to attempt to run all over them. Instead Colin lights them up for over 400 yards through the air! I love it!

  7. tokyosandblaster says: Sep 8, 2013 8:07 PM

Good win by the niners. As I predicted, the Packers would sell out against the run and the middle of the field would be open all day. I think it’s clear that the Packers have improved, and in a game that could have gone either way, anyone saying the Packers don’t have a shot at the Super Bowl this year is either crazy, stupid, or a purple pansy.

  8. gsiggins says: Sep 8, 2013 8:07 PM

Pretty cool that Clay Matthews was able to get away with throwing punches and having the refs penalize the opposing team.

Rodger is flawless but as a 49ers fan, Kaepernick held up just as well. Amazing chemistry with Boldin and improved rapport with Vernon Davis. I LOVE IT!

Packers not having Morgan Burnett and Casey Hayward arguably their 2 best defensive backs today may have been the difference in the game. The Lacy fumble and Finley drop that turned into an INT were huge plays too.

I think the 49ers are the best team in football right now but if these 2 teams meet again and the 49ers have Crabtree and the Packers have the 2 DBs they were missing today I think Green Bay has a solid shot. Lacy and LT Bakihatari will be seasoned by then too.

This game shows me that the people saying the Packers were in quick decline and a non-playoff team are fools. As long as the Pack has #12 they will be like the Pats and Colts all these years.

Play of the game was kaepernick running for a first down on 3rd down in green bays redzone while 3 blatant holds were taking place. The refs were not calling them on SF all game, and i knew theyd never call it on them after that play.

  23. strokinmyego says: Sep 8, 2013 8:11 PM

Man Ozzie Newsome may be a great GM but how bad does his choice to trade Boldin for a 6th(!!!!!!) round pick look right now?

Granted it’s only week one and tons of things can and will change between now and the playoffs but it looks like the 49ers fleeced one of the greats on this one.

  24. itsmammoth says: Sep 8, 2013 8:12 PM

  25. jhein23 says: Sep 8, 2013 8:12 PM

Contra – you do realize Rodgers was going up against the 49ers D who has like 5 all pro players on it and Colin was going up against the Packers who have Matthews and that’s about it for star power.

Plus compare the 49ers offensive line to the Packers. Give Rodgers the 49ers D and OLine and lets see what happens buddy. I think it would be another 15-1 season for ARodg and 50 tds.

  26. gophersnot says: Sep 8, 2013 8:12 PM

    49ers look pretty damn loaded.

Lets not get crazy. Kaepernick is absolutely great, but if Rodgers had the run game SF does he’d have some open guys too. Look at the throws he makes usually theres a defender all over his target.

As a Rams fan it sucks that a 2nd rounder (CP) and 3rd rounder (Wilson) are both already better than our #1 overall pick (Bradford).

  41. aceinthehole12 says: Sep 8, 2013 8:17 PM

Yeahhh man ! Kap looked great today as did Boldin and VD. Defense was solid..all around great game for both teams. Niners hopefully get back to the Super Bowl and win it this time !

  42. usdcoyotesfan says: Sep 8, 2013 8:17 PM

Matthews dove at Kaepernick before he stepped out of bounds. On top of that, the 49ers got to replay 3rd down when offsetting fouls should have made it 4th down. The Packers would’ve been down 30-28 and kicked a field goal on the final play if it wasn’t for that. Not to mention the missed facemask on Lacy earlier. That resulted in 2nd and long instead of an automatic 1st down. Today’s player of the game? Bill Leavy.

  43. tokyosandblaster says: Sep 8, 2013 8:17 PM

This is why I love Vikings fans. They got flat out destroyed today by a 4-12 team (the score doesn’t do the destruction justice), and yet here they are, trying to make fun of a team for losing by 6 to a team from the Super Bowl.

These kids and their drugs. I tell ya.

  44. mrwalterisgod says: Sep 8, 2013 8:18 PM

The Packers just aren’t that good as a whole football team. Sure, they can win 10 or 11 games because Aaron Rodgers is unfreakingreal, but that defense is slop and that offensive line is…. offensive.

  46. sparky900 says: Sep 8, 2013 8:18 PM

Didn’t really see Kaepernick as better that Rodgers. But as a Packer fan, saw what I expected: a deeper, more talented 49er team against a Packer team with a few stars, but not enough stoppers. Regardless, I thought the Packers might get blown out; they competed, and I am hopeful that there might be a rematch. I’m not sure the Packers’ defense is all that bad; the 49er offense may have many, many easier match-ups.

  47. aokmaster42 says: Sep 8, 2013 8:19 PM

Nice attempt at humor with your 5th grade comment contra74, but your real humor in your post was ‘Kaepernick > Rodgers.’ You’re basing that off a game where the Packers were missing their top two players in their secondary? Based on the 49ers having the best DL and one of the best OL’s in all of football and Rodgers having one of the worst lines in football? Kaepernick is on his way to being big time but he isn’t there yet. Over 1/2 of his yards came on blown assignments in Green Bay’s secondary with guys WIDE open. You may want to study and watch games more closely and not just make outlandish statements based on no fact outside of a final score.

  48. jcbadger34 says: Sep 8, 2013 8:19 PM

Oh look, Vikings fans trying to distract themselves from realizing they just got dominated by the LOLions, and still have that noodle-armed Ponder chick as their QB.

Congratulations 49ers. Kaepernick is an amazing QB. Things I took from this game:

    1) Green Bay safeties need to work on their assignments. Seemed to be a little confusion on the back end all game long

    2) Colin Kaepernick CAN beat you with his arm. But the team IS beatable when his legs are contained.

    3) Green Bay’s offensive line held up pretty well all game against a mean 49ers pass rush.

This game is what football should be…hard fought on both sides. Well played football all around. The next game should be interesting if Green Bay gets the issues worked out in the secondary. That should happen with the return of Burnett

It would have been 4th and 6 yards to go if I remember correctly. Even if it were 4th and 2, the Niners kick the FG there, knowing the game would be tight and every score counts.

And, nothing matters about anything either called or not. Te game is in the books and the 49ers won the game.

I will say this, it was a lot closer than anyone thought it would be. Green Bay is going to be good this year, and if the next time they meet is in the playoffs, the Packer haters better hope that GB doesn’t have the home feild advantage. If that game were in GB today, the Packers would have won by a point or two.

Yeah, it is easy to hit guys who are wide open. At least be realistic about it. The Packers secondary looked slow out there today. They were a step or two behind all game. Why? Because they didn’t get good work in preseason and it is week one.. It showed today. Lets see what happens in a few months. If you are lucky, Kaepernick will make it a whole season without getting hurt. He took some hits today, those will add up over 16 games.

This is why I love Vikings fans. They got flat out destroyed today by a 4-12 team (the score doesn’t do the destruction justice), and yet here they are, trying to make fun of a team for losing by 6 to a team from the Super Bowl.

These kids and their drugs. I tell ya.

    No…

It’s amusing to listen to the Packer fans whine about the refs and whatever else they can muster for excuses. All off season, you, in particular, have been bragging about how great the Packers are, how they will be the dominant force in the NFC North etc… I hate to tell you loud mouth, your team STILL can’t run the ball (even with your SOD Lacey) and the CB’s and safeties still suck.

Brag all you want, continue your inane comments but, at the end of the day, you team LOST again.

After watching the Lions today, beware of them as well because God help you if the Lions beat the Packers. You will never hear the end of it then.

  91. dwarftosser says: Sep 8, 2013 8:39 PM

I’m not sure that Kaep is greater than Rodgers, but he sure looked great today. The 49ers look like the team to beat. Looking forward to watching this rematch in January…

  92. ponderthedumpoffking says: Sep 8, 2013 8:39 PM

Honestly, I feel like Mike McCarthy and Jeremy Ross lost this game today.

McCarthy should have declined the penalty before the brawl, which would have led to a 49ers field goal.

Ross needs to just take a knee unless it’s wide open. The Packers started way behind the 20 twice. Time to try Micah Hyde.

The Packers against the run? Amazing. These Vikings fans are terrified right now. Peterson will get maybe 60 yards per game, and it will rest on Christian Ponder’s arm. Let’s just let that sink in.

The Packers should still end up 12-4, 11-5 at worst. The niners should win the west. These two teams will meet again, and it will be a great game, the winner probably winning the Super Bowl.

As a Packers fan, I didn’t really expect them to win this game. The 49ers are a more complete team at this very early point in the season.

I did, however, expect to see the usual moronic comments from 49er fans on this board. But they deserve to gloat, for now.

What really amazes me is that there are comments here from Viking vans. I would have thought that after losing to the lowly Lions, they would be way too embarrassed to show their faces around here. Apparently that loss has yet to penetrate the thick skulls of Minnesota natives which result from six generations of marrying within the family :-(

Bad calls and missed calls on both sides of the ball, but the 49ers did deserve to win the game. It would have been nice if the Packers could have stolen a win, but the 9ers were just too much.

I really wish the Packers secondary would have played better, but overall, the Pack went toe-to-toe with the best team in the NFC and just came up short.

But I do want to thank all the Vikings fans for showing up. Your team lost to the Lions by double digits and are still talking trash about the Packers. I’ll be laughing about this for weeks.

Green Bay fans complaining about the officiating should look at the tape again – Staley does nothing but grab Matthews’ jersey and yell at him for a dirty cheap shot clearly designed to injure Kaepernick, and Matthews responds by punching him twice in the facemask.

to the Packers fans who want some cheese with their whine, you got beat fair and square. if they played this game 10 times, 6 of them would have gone even worse for you than this one did. to the classy Packers fans who gave credit where it was due, good game and see you in the playoffs.

Kaep can only throw to one person on any play, but a healthy Burnett and Hayward would put a much bigger blanket over the field.

Not saying it would back a drastic difference, but it would be make a difference. As a Packers fan, what I wanted to see was more man-to-man coverage. Seeing the 49er receivers finding gaps in the Packers zone all day long is what made the biggest difference today.

First off congrats on the 49ers on a hard, fought win. Even though my Packers lost, it was a great game nonetheless. Kaepernick exceeded my expectations. Thought he was just another one of the flash in the pan players but he played great today.

As for my Packers, they lost but it is no big deal. It is only the first game of the season. They did show hope in their defense today as well. The run defense was fantastic, holding Frank Gore to 44 yards on 21 carries. However, Matthews’ decision to tackle Kaepernick out of bounds was beyond boneheaded. He should know better than to do that. The pass defense was HORRIBLE. They can’t keep allowing players to rack up 200 yards receiving like Boldin did today. That is unacceptable. The run offense needs to step it up but other than that it was just another day in the office for Rodgers.

The Pack had a year to game plan and make corrections to the embarrassing performances last year against this team and failed to do so. Dom Capers’ contract should not have been renewed for this season, but he promised that he would have an answer to last years’ debacles, but obviously does not. IMO, this was the Packers playoff game for this season. They could win almost all of the rest of their games, but eventually they would likely play this team again in the playoffs and have shown that for some reason that they cannot beat this team.

  134. gdublud says: Sep 8, 2013 9:51 PM

The call on replaying third down was wrong but the karma was right. There was two things that the league will take issue with when it comes to Clay Matthews. The obvious is the “Rock Bottom” he gave Kaepernick, the other issue most folks are missing is that he launched himself at Kaepernick and went for the head. I believe the league will take two actions on Matthews. First fine him $25k to $50k for the headshot and I believe he should be suspended at least 1 game for launching himself. If the league wants to maintain credibility about player safety, especially after the “fair settlement” than they need to send a statement to ALL players regardless of who is affected. I can guarantee you it wouldn’t matter who the defensive player is if that had happened to Tom Brady.

We can just assume this was merely intended to be provocative because any football fan who watched that game would have a very different conclusion. Anquin Boldin and the 49ers offensive line won that game. If the teams switched quarterbacks, Rodgers would have thrown for 7 touchdowns. Kap had time to survey the field and threw off target half the time being saved by the circus catches of Anquin Boldin. Harbaugh crying to the officials that someone may want to tackle his arrogant quarterback was pretty sad for a franchise that prides themselves on toughness.

If you can’t see the difference between that tackle and an actual tackle that started inbounds then you are a myopic moron. He then went on to punch Joe Staley twice. Twice. He’s lucky he didn’t get ejected. fogure out how tge game would have ended without Clay Mathews. He should have had 2 personal fouls called on him. It should have been 1st and goal.

Kaep had the class to go up and give Mathews a hug after the game.

Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome in one year goes from NFL Executive of the year to Worst executive in the NFL for trading a great player who helped you win a Superbowl, traded for a mere 6th round draft pick, a guy who was your best receiver on your roster, and getting rid of the leadership of Ray Lewis and Ed Reed ? Is he crazy ? He should have hired Ray Lewis as a Defensive assistant and kept Ed Reed as at least a locker room leader and full in guy in The Defensive backfield. All horribly bad moves by Newsome, thinking you can get rid of the backbone of your team which was Hall of Fame material and just replace them with anyone or young Rookies?! Come on…he is crazy…if he thinks that….
That’s my observation and I am a Titans fan! We got Bernard Pollard at Safety, handed to us by the Ravens….
You can’t replace greatness with just anyone! ? ! can you?! No!

Boo hoo hoo. “The refs screwed us”

Come on ladies! Clay Matthews smashed our QB out of bounds. He’s lucky Joe Staley didn’t make him into his girlfriend! BTW The final score was more then the 4 point difference a field goal vs a touchdown made. Quit whining because the difference in this game wasn’t a mistake on the Refs behalf. It wa your linebackers and DB’s getting shredded by the Kaptian.

Wow! Let must just say this. That was one HELL of a great football game! What a way to kick off the season – two powerhouse teams trading blows, tight until the end. This game had everything! What amazing performances by A. Boldin and C Kaepernick. What an AMAZING catch by J Nelson on the sideline! Early 4th quarter, I told a buddy that no matter who wins, both teams are leaving it all on the field today. And they sure did. I’m a Packers fan, but I have to admit, the 9ers look more than legit. That defense is something else. And so is the offense! For the Packers, if they don’t make the mistakes they made, they could’ve gotten out of there with the W.
Matthews admits he screwed up on the late hit and I agree, it shouldn’t have been offsetting penalties. McCarthy benched him for much of the next series, too.
I just loved the drama and would love to see these two teams meet again in January. Right now, I have San Francisco as tops in my power rankings. But the Packers should know they can play with these guys now, but they HAVE to fix the secondary.
Most important, FOOTBALL IS BACK! A-men!

Retaliation? Staley just interposed himself between Mathews and Kaepernick. Rabid Mathews beat on Staley after late hitting and horsecollaring Kaepernick out of bounds. Retaliation penalty should never have been called on Staley. Mathews should have received double personal foul and should have been kicked out of the game after beating on Staley. These retaliation penalties ought to be reviewed by the refs. I assume the league will heavily fine Mathews. Staley did nothing wrong.

    Yo dirtyjersey

You’re making it sound like Carolina is some scrub of a team. They were insanely close to being 9-7 last year if it wasn’t for a couple dumb fumbles. Seattle barely beat them last season too and we took it to you guys 42-13 you remember that one? A win is a win. They have an extremely good front 7 and its on the road. Without 3 of our starters on defense we allowed Newton to throw for 125 yards. Wilson threw for over 300 yards. Its not like we struggled. Carolina could end up being a 10-6 team this year and we can look back and say we beat them on the road. Also, your defense was absolutely shredded today. Enjoy this win buddy, because you dang well know your team is going to get destroyed next week. Kaepernick will not be able to hear anything at all LOL its going to be so funny. Boldin doesn’t stand a chance against Browner either. Seriously though, enjoy this win. Next week will not be pretty for you guys.

First of all…hats off to the 49ers and their . Well deserved win.

Secondly…to all the Viking trolls on this thread talking smack…you have to be absolutely joking. What a pathetic bunch. I mean, you DO realize you lost to the Lions today, don’t you?
    —–
Half the nfl lost today, including the packers. Deal with it.

Not sure if Kaep is better than Rodgers but he still might wear that Niner shirt under his pads. The Packers are no joke, this was two elite teams pounding it out. Great game, I’m glad the Niners won but Packers shouldn’t hang their heads after this one. Very physical game and no one got seriously hurt, that’s a plus for both sides.

  152. chi01town says: Sep 9, 2013 1:04 AM

Who died and made Rodgers the best QB in the league? As Long as Tom Brady, Payton Manning, and Drew Brees is in the NFL all 3 of them is better than Rodgers. Packers fans think Brett Farve just left and gave Rodgers the crown but he cant give Rodgers a crown he never had.

  153. shaggytoodle says: Sep 9, 2013 1:06 AM

Well played game by SF, I am glad GB didn’t quit especially on the D which a lot people thought they would have.

There were windows in zone coverage Kaepernick hung in the pocket and looked like a classic QB that was quite impressive getting the ball to Boldin and Davis.

I hope the next game is just as good but with a different outcome.

  154. beyonderhawk says: Sep 9, 2013 1:35 AM

Yeh big deal 49ers you beat a team with a week secondary! Lets see you come pick on a real defense next week up in Seattle! We will show you who the real bully is……. Lets see kapernick throw for 400 yards against us!!!! You mean more like 3 or 4 int!!!! Can’t wait to punch the 49ers and whinner hardbaugh in the mouth and break the Nfls hearth!! it’s a NEW DAY NEW TRAILS ARE BLAZING!!! iTS our turn you guys got fat while everybody starved……..

  155. Dogsweat says: Sep 9, 2013 1:45 AM

Kap owns Rodgers? Wilson owns Kap and the 49ers. Kap looked like a lost kid looking for his Mom in a mall- up in Seattle last year.

PS- You lost the Super Bowl last Year.

And oh by the way 49ers, please stomp the Seahawks next week.

    *******
Ha! It’s a coincidence that you posted what you did, and 2013 is the 40th anniversary of Aerosmith’s “Dream On”!

  157. donsjohnson says: Sep 9, 2013 1:55 AM

I’m a fan of neither team, but I watched the game and have to say it was a great game. Kudos to both teams for going almost down to the wire. I must say, the Niners looked a little better–the Packers secondary looked lost all day and couldn’t stop Boldin whatsoever. That was the difference. Nevertheless, fwiw, there’s something to those Packers….if they can gel a little bit more over the course of the season, I think they’d be a legitimate contender just as much as the Niners/Seattle/Denver, etc. Heck, a rematch against the Niners in the playoffs might be even more entertaining than this one was.

Lastly, given I’m kind of new here, can someone please tell me what’s up with these Vikings fans posting trash here? I mean, they lost their first game today and like my own team (Chargers), have never won a Super Bowl. I don’t get it…other than that it’s laughably pathetic. But whatever…

  158. stillapackfan says: Sep 9, 2013 2:10 AM

It was a good game, no excuses. It was only the first game of the season not the demise of a team. Let’s do as the teams do and move on to our next opponents.

  159. MyClassyTeam says: Sep 9, 2013 4:33 AM

Hard fought 9er/GB game. So glad we won 49er fans please don’t act classless, like Seattle’s fan base. The 49er’s and GB’s fan base know what it’s like to win SB’s where seattle doesn’t. If anyone noticed at end of game Clay Mattews and Kaep were talking to each other. I do think Rogers is a great QB that has won a SB and I hope Kaep can help us win #6 So stay classy 49er fans.

  160. deltaoracle says: Sep 9, 2013 3:43 PM

Good game; hope to have another one with them with a different outcome. If Packers can keep playing stout vs. the run and get Burnett and Heyward back in the DB, they’ll be good. A little surprised many SF fans have to act like they’ve never won one before, but I get excited when the Pack wins too.
