Lions survive mistakes to beat Vikings

Minnesota Vikings v Detroit Lions Getty Images

The Detroit Lions made a whole lot of mistakes and had a whole lot of bad breaks on Sunday. But they still managed to win.

In a weird game at Ford Field, the Vikings took an early lead while the Lions couldn’t get out of their own way. Among the early mistakes the Lions made:

– Leaving the middle of the field wide open for Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who had an easy 78-yard touchdown run on his first carry.

– Bobbling the snap on what should have been a chip-shot field goal, resulting in an impressive early drive yielding no points.

– A completely unnecessary personal foul on Ndamukong Suh negated a pick-six by Detroit’s defense.

– Lions cornerback Bill Bentley dropped an interception when he was in position for a pick-six.

The good news for the Lions was that after all those early mistakes, they trailed only 14-6. And once they stopped making all those mistakes, they dominated the rest of the game, winning 34-24.

New Lions running back Reggie Bush looks like the perfect fit in Detroit’s offense. Bush caught four passes for 101 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown on which he looked as fast as ever. Bush also gained 90 rushing yards.

Peterson wasn’t a factor after that initial touchdown, gaining just 15 yards on 17 carries the rest of the game. The Lions’ defensive tackles, Suh and Nick Fairley, both had very strong games — other than Suh’s bonehead personal foul.

The biggest question facing the Lions going forward is whether they can avoid those mistakes. When they’re not shooting themselves in the foot, they’re an impressive football team. But they can’t afford to start every game shooting themselves in the foot, the way they did today.

The Lions showed a lot of grit today with everything that happened in this game!

  6. jcbadger34 says: Sep 8, 2013 4:34 PM

Hey Adrian, only 2407 yards to go!

Hey Greg, how’s Christian Ponder’s “leadership” working out for you. You missing “that guy” in Green Bay yet?

    4-12 season for the Vikes.

  7. sikoix says: Sep 8, 2013 4:34 PM

Reggie Bush had a great game. Outside of one play, Vikings really never got anything going on the ground. Simpson had a surprisingly good game for a vet a lot of people thought would be cut in training camp. Ponder looks awful. These are my first impressions as a Viking fan. Lion fans might have more to look forward to this year than expected.

  8. trannesotabiqueens says: Sep 8, 2013 4:35 PM

Biqueens are a joke. By far the worst team in the division. Ponder is terrible. Don’t even get me started on greg jennings. Just wow… Mark Sanchez will look nice in purple next year. Take that to the bank.

  9. contra74 says: Sep 8, 2013 4:35 PM

Ugh those defensive penalties killed it for the Vikings. Good game Detroit. You’ve got something good going with bush and fauria.

  10. eightandeightlions says: Sep 8, 2013 4:35 PM

While Suh holding a players only meeting to discuss how lack of discipline hurts the team was admirable, it was too bad he wasn’t listening to himself.

    This is absolutely hilarious..

Week one of Greg Jennings’ Super Bowl odyssey! Here we go!

  12. harrywarden15 says: Sep 8, 2013 4:37 PM

Sorry but Ponder is awful and the sooner the Vikings switch to Cassel or Bethel-Thompson (my preference because Cassel has shown that he’s not that good either) the better. Feel sorry for Peterson who has no chance when there is little passing threat.

  13. vavikingfan says: Sep 8, 2013 4:37 PM

    We have Ponder

  14. taintedsaints2009 says: Sep 8, 2013 4:40 PM

Horrible defense and horrible offensive line. Matt kahlil looks terrible. Ponder is just sloppy and inaccurate. Three interceptioms and a fumble. most teams would be very angry with that kind of performance but the vikings are getting used to pick six ponder doing that. Looked just like the pre season. Might be time to bring kluwe back since Locke was pretty bad. Besides one fluke play, the Vikings were downright awful and don’t show any signs of being a competitive team. 3-13 with their schedule. Trade Jared Allen and Kevin Williams for picks, and get ready for the clowney saga, Viking fans.

  15. gb4mn0 says: Sep 8, 2013 4:41 PM

The lavender larry’s clearly showed they are the team to beat…… Can’t wait to read all the delusional excuses the purple toads can conjure up to explain this embarrassing loss away. I wonder if Jennings still feels the same about Ponder now? HA HA HA!

  16. hatesycophants says: Sep 8, 2013 4:41 PM

I don’t care how you attempt to characterize it, and the Lions clearly made some mistakes, they dominated the Vikings for 3 quarters.

    Win.

  17. warhammer420 says: Sep 8, 2013 4:42 PM

It wasn’t pretty, but the Lions pulled out the W! Bush looked impressive. He’s gonna be a major weapon for the Lions.

  18. thepvyharvin says: Sep 8, 2013 4:43 PM

First…Packer knobs just go watch your team get smeared in SF…no wonder all fans hate you…

Congrats Lions, I think your team is moving up with Bush,Dline and big,or huge receivers…

Vikings are a good team that is missing a key piece to the puzzle..a QB. I’m officially declaring Ponder a backup quality QB…

  19. nflfollower says: Sep 8, 2013 4:43 PM

There were lots of Vikings fans talking pregame about all those offensive weapons and how were the lions going to stop them? Turns out stopping AP was more than enough. What was it after that first gimme run? 17 carries for 15 yards or something like that? The rest of the offense was invisible. Looks like another year where it’s AP or nothing for MN.

  20. donl517 says: Sep 8, 2013 4:44 PM

The personal foul on Suh was a bit ticky tacky, but the rules are the rules, lets see if they call it that way all year.

  24. rockbottom37 says: Sep 8, 2013 4:56 PM

  25. brewdogg says: Sep 8, 2013 4:57 PM

Hats off to the Lions, they made the Vikings D look like a Pop Warner team today. Bush looks like a great addition. The DL did a great job of living in the Vikings backfield and keeping Peterson from getting going. Good luck until we see you at the dome!

  28. ivanpavlov0000 says: Sep 8, 2013 5:05 PM

The personal foul on Suh was a low block on the return. I was surprised it was a foul. In the highlights one of the announcers said something about a new rule? But … if it’s a new rule, then it’s a total bonehead penalty that shouldn’t have happened. Defense may need to learn how to block.

All questions about Reggie Bush were answered. He’s got wheels. Stats show the Lions ran the ball effectively, which they didn’t do last year.

Slow day for Calvin Johnson. Must be the post-Madden jinx! Obviously the Vikings paid dearly for focusing all of their attention on him.

  29. rockbottom37 says: Sep 8, 2013 5:05 PM

So, back to the game. I think it bodes well for the Lions that the offense did so well while Johnson was a relative non-factor. Perhaps that was a result of the Vikings trying to take him out, but regardless, if the Lions can make teams truly pay for that tactic on a regular basis, I like the possibilities for the offense.

But, according to this thread, the Lions just won the Super Bowl.

Seriously though, tip of the hat to the Lions. I wouldn’t say they dominated, though. It was a 3 point game until a botched hand off followed by a questionable roughing the passer call. No excuses. Play calling was vanilla. Musgrave is doing Ponder no favors. Simpson looked good but need more Patterson and Rudolph. It’s gonna be a tough division this year, but it’s a long season.

Hey Vike fans before we start blaming Ponder, start blaming that offensive line. Every quarterback in this league will look bad with the very little protection they would get from this line. They can not pass block to save their lives. Their run blocking is their strength, but even that was poor today.

HUGE missed holding call on the Vikes during that run, the upfield WR was hanging onto the DB’s arm while AP ran past.

  62. Frazier28/7 says: Sep 8, 2013 9:13 PM

Ugly game that was won by the team who played better. Lions made their mistakes and made the most of the Vikings mistakes. It’s pretty easy to win though when your offense starting average is position is inside the enemies 50 yard line.

Terrible punting, terrible playcalling, terrible tackling, terrible o-line play and terrible Ponder.

The team looked nothing like the team that finished ’12 and a lot like them team from ’11.

Ponder is going to get Leslie Frazier fired.

  63. whatjusthapped says: Sep 8, 2013 10:06 PM

I hate to laugh during the pre season where there were a lot of Viking fans predicting that Ponder will have his break out season.

They were right, Ponder did make a break but it is straight downhill. The team has too much talent to wait on Ponder. I am not a big believer in Cassell but seriously, how much worse could it be?

  64. Born: 1961 Titles seen: 0 says: Sep 8, 2013 10:35 PM

  66. wiseguy12 says: Sep 8, 2013 11:22 PM

I am now ready to acknowledge what the rest of the world as known for the past 2 years. Ponder will not develop into a successful starting QB in the NFL. He is not an inconsistent passer, he is an inaccurate passer. He continues to make the same mistakes in judgment that have plagued him in the past. Experience has not taught him much of anything. You cannot rely on AP carrying the offense on his back for the entire season and the receivers should not be asked to consistently make great catches on poorly thrown balls. Lobbing the ball into the air while running backwards is never a good idea. He will start next week against a proven defense in Chicago and it could get real ugly real fast.
If Fraiser waits until the Vikes are 0-4 to act it will be a long season in Minnesota.

  67. jollyjoker2 says: Sep 8, 2013 11:28 PM

ponder was supposed to move it up a notch this year…apparently he is topped out and will always be 3rd tier qb….. The Vikes will play well at home and beat some people. could be a long year. A few injuries and this team will be in a deep hole.

  68. vikesfansteve says: Sep 9, 2013 12:50 AM

Reminds me of Chilly’s pre Favre teams. Good running game hindered by run, run, pass play calling in a league that uses the pass to set up the run. The same porous defense that can’t stop the pass at all but now they can’t stop the run either. The only times Detroit was stopped is when they dropped a pass otherwise it was an offensive display against a way overmatched defense. That will change when Williams returns but still that was ugly. As far as a non existent Rudolph and Jennings that was all due to Musgrave and another terrible game play calling. Too many first downs running to Peterson. Ponder was beyond terrible. Spielman will of course never acknowledge it but they over reached for Ponder and he has quality backup talent but he is not nearly accurate enough for today’s NFL. A cannon arm isn’t needed as much as an accurate thrower. Look at Peyton Manning. Even if the Vikings start 0-3 they still can win 10 games. It’s obvious though that Ponders play as much as the Swiss cheese D cost the game. How long before the Vikings admit to the failed experiment and end the torture. Tjac is better than Ponder. That is a disheartening statement.

  69. thetruthcampaign says: Sep 9, 2013 2:28 AM

The first half was looking awfully familiar and frustrating to Lion’s nation, including a Pettigrew drop and fumble and TD’s called back. While Suh didn’t need to throw that block, I didn’t think it looked like from behind or thrown lower than the hip. The only word I could use about that half was “curse”. I’m glad they overcame. This is the team we expected last season. Bush and Bell are unstoppable. I liked the plays they were running with those guys. The holes were gigantic for those 2.

Yes the o-line did not look good, but there are about 25 (or more) other QBs in the league that would not continue to make the same boneheaded decisions Ponder makes over and over. He’s inaccurate and can’t seem to throw the ball away. Remember when we drafted him and we were told how he may not be the most talented but he sure was intelligent. The not the most talented part seems to fit but I sure haven’t seen the intelligence. Year three is getting too far along to play so inconsistently.

Maybe this is the year the Lions put it together and win the division. There is certainly enough talent on that roster to be a playoff team. I would be happy for the Detroit fans if that happens. As far as the Vikings go, it’s just one weak… er week. I hope they can get the offensive line squared away for Chicago next week. If they can get the running game going, there’ll still be some hope for this season. If not, well at least the draft will be exciting! Skol!

Another hapless and tasteless season is in store for the bewildered Viking fan base.
