Seahawks survive on the road, beat Panthers 12-7

Seattle Seahawks v Carolina Panthers Getty Images

The Panthers kept giving the Seahawks chances, and finally, they took them.

A 43-yard touchdown from Russell Wilson to Jermaine Kearse was the only touchdown of the second half, helping the Seahawks to an East Coast win.

The Panthers appeared to be on their way to a potential go-ahead score, when Seahawks  safety Earl Thomas forced a DeAngelo Williams fumble late, allowing Wilson to run out the clock.

That kind of black-cat luck will only bring back bad memories for the Panthers. They’ve gotten off to 2-8 starts each of the last two seasons under coach Ron Rivera.

This won’t help, and now moves their record to 2-13 in games decided by a touchdown or less.

Wilson was a clean 25-of-33 for 320 yards, making plays at the right moments throughout the day. The Panthers gave them too many chances throughout the day, and even though both defenses played well, the Seahawks made the last two plays of the day, and that was the difference.

There’s no ugly wins in the NFL, especially on the road. 1 of 16…

The Seahawks look every bit the Super Bowl team everyone projected.

You can all laugh at that joke for a few minutes.

Wasn’t our best game, but I think we learned a lot. Heck, we are playing without our 3 star D lineman – and P.Harvin.

    Wilson is the real deal.

Not a Seahawks fan, but lol at that guy on the last article about this game talking so much smack

  7. bigbaldpapahawk says: Sep 8, 2013 3:59 PM

Tough game, great win by my beloved ‘Hawks. Carolina’s D-line looks for real. 10AM game on the east coast. Our D holds to 7 points and we walk out with a win…

I will take that every time.

  8. orivar says: Sep 8, 2013 4:01 PM

Looks like somebody who was making fun of the Seahawks has to eat crow. Just watch and enjoy the games especially if you don’t know football.

Now time to enjoy this Bills game as it is good.

  9. dukeearl says: Sep 8, 2013 4:02 PM

Could have been a different game without the 2 unsportsmanlike conduct calls against Carolina.

Glad the Seahawks pulled it out.

  10. jda129 says: Sep 8, 2013 4:03 PM

That was brutally close. Glad to see Seattle survive with a win. That Carolina front 7 is no joke and only looks to get better. Won’t be surprised to see them up in the top tier of the league in run stopping when it’s all said and done. Good luck the rest of the way Panthers’ fans.

  11. bfl8 says: Sep 8, 2013 4:05 PM

Squeaked out the win, but Seahawks will take it. O-line has got to get better protection for Wilson and better blocking for Beast Mode. Go Hawks!

Dukearl- the seahawks had way more costly penalties, the panthers Gaines about 250 total yards. They moves the ball bc of penalties Alot of the time costing the seahawks a few drives allowing the panthers to continue.

Great hard nose game, panthers will make noise in that division.

On a side not, did anyone hear the commentators, omg I have never in my life heard all game about one team. So one sides in every single play. Always ” lucky, almost, barely ”. Dude reserve your opinion for one of your best friends for private.

We seahawks fans dont need to hear alllllll game long about the panthers and your many crush and unrealistic optimism on every successful play for the seahawks… ESPECIALLY bc your the seahawks local commentator. Omg..

    Any one else see this.

Tough, hard earned win. Carolina’s d-line and lb’s are legit. It’s not easy to hold Lynch down like they did. Both teams lost a fumble in the red zone. Seattle playing early on the east coast without a handful of critical starters showed some guts in the win.

  19. jonkchar says: Sep 8, 2013 4:18 PM

Carolina is legit. Seahawks just needed the momentum they got in the second half and then its lights-out. Go ‘Hawks!

  20. whoisrdymlz says: Sep 8, 2013 4:19 PM

I’m done talking smack. Forever. Used to be fun to have a little back and forth with the opposing team’s fan base before game day. Unfortunately, the Panthers find ways to lose games that they seem to be winning. They never show up until they’re mathematically elongated from the playoffs.

    SMH.

Mark it down folks………Carolina is going to rock Seattle week 1. Seattle as a team and a city are so entrenched, so obsessed, so paranoid about San Francisco that Cam Newton is going to go ape on Seattle. Mark it folks……………45-17 Carolina.

San Francisco as a team and as city aren’t even a tenth as obsessed with Seattle as Seattle is with SF. The reason: San Francisco has ‘been there’ and knows how to act. Seattle can’t even “act” like it has been there before hence all the build up, vitriol and anxiety over SF.

Mark it…….Seattle gets throttled by Carolina opening day.

Laughed at those wannabee writers at B/R when they said seattle would blow out Carolina. I knew this would be a hard-fought game, but it’s deja vu for carolina’s offense.

  28. thebirdofprey says: Sep 8, 2013 5:07 PM

So many uninformed fans trying to bash Seattle and yet they cleaned up their play second half. Panthers front 7 is no joke, the rookie DT was hard to move and Kuechly is as good as advertised. Next game we should have Avril, Clem back in the line up. Bruce Irvin after week 4. So considering our scheme still is beat the lineman with front 4 its going to be huge for pressure. We still played solid defense from start to finish. Wilson to Baldwin looked nice..Go Hawks!

  29. blackhawks2010 says: Sep 8, 2013 5:10 PM

  30. mulehead70 says: Sep 8, 2013 5:11 PM

Panthers fans, don’t fret. Your D is the real deal…seriously. It’s just the first game of the season.

  31. seahawksbmx says: Sep 8, 2013 5:14 PM

Great win and score doesn’t matter in standings. All summer long, I feared this would be a loss. Epic battle vs. SF up next. Ticket prices already breaking regular season records and it’s WEEK 2. This is gonna be a fun season!

  32. htowntexan says: Sep 8, 2013 5:26 PM

Seattle is supposedly the best team in the league. Really? Looks like a 9 win team this year.

  33. scmems07 says: Sep 8, 2013 5:43 PM

I love it! All this talk about the shehawks power house offense and talking all this trash, they come out and put up a dud on a team that has won 20 games in 3 years and now it’s oh, good game Panthers, they have a great d, Panthers are good….what a joke. Need a list of all the excuses for the shehawks this year. So far it’s 1.Panthers have a great d and 2. Had a lot of injured players.

  34. papahawk78 says: Sep 8, 2013 5:47 PM

@htowntexan Yes, because 9 win teams typically only give up 7 points on the road.

  35. chikiboy says: Sep 8, 2013 5:49 PM

Andrew Luck has a “not-so-stellar” game against a HORRIBLE Raiders team at Home (which they very easily could have lost) and it’s “Andrew Luck gets another 4th quarter comeback”.

Russell Wilson is harassed by a good front 7 of the Carolina Panthers all game long, makes some big plays, executes a 4th quarter comeback and ends up with a very solid game statistically and it’s “Seahawks escape with a win”.

    Funny.

Carolina played a good game and the Seahawks will continue to get better as some important players return to the field.

As much as I would like to agree with that statement….. if DeAngelo doesnt lose the ball in the red zone on that last drive, these comments would likely be going in the other direction.

On the bright side, its good to see the Panther defense coming back around. That used to be their strong suit. Good things to come in the near future.

“Andrew Luck has a “not-so-stellar” game against a HORRIBLE Raiders team at Home (which they very easily could have lost) and it’s “Andrew Luck gets another 4th quarter comeback”.”

Really, not so stellar? Only missed 5 passes, 2 td’s, rushing td and another amazing comeback when the defense fails. Typical shehawks fan. Their qb gets one passing td against one of the worst pass d’s in the league and coughs the ball up on a fumble and they want to make fun of a far superior qb. Stay classy Seattle. We will be laughing all the way to your mediocre season end. keep eating the hate.

12-7 also happens to be the score by which the Packers beat the Seahawks last year. Tate didn’t catch it, no matter how many times he or Lance Easley say it was the right call, no matter how Roger Goodell wants us to interpret a simultaneous catch.

I will say the Seahawks will b around for awhile and for those hating on the Panthers we r 1 of only a few teams who avg loss is in single digits! Its just a matter of time for us to swing in the other direction. After watching the postgame interviews I see a different approach from the team and its a hunger and an extra chip on the shoulder! Ppl slept on Seattle last year coming into the season and Flacco and the Ravens da.. sure wasn’t expected to win the Super Bowl! Its a long season! Great game Seattle, hope to see u guys again soon!

I have something to say to everyone on here trashing on the Hawks. Why don’t you save that jealous ranting for a game the hawks lose. You sound like tantrum throwing children. Frankly, you sound like ignorant football trolls. Last years super bowl champs, the Baltimore Ravens, nearly lost to the Chiefs, squeaking out a stellar 9-6 victory. They also lost to the Eagles in week 2. Their season turned out pretty good. Trashing a victory does nothing but highlights how little you really know about the NFL.

    Seven frakkin’ points.

Cam Newton, less than 200 yards. Panthers less than 300 yards.

I know 98% of ‘merica is enamored with offensive football, but I think we need to give credit to the defense when credit is due.

  60. chrismatthewsucks says: Sep 9, 2013 4:13 PM

So Seattle had 5 defensive starters out (45%) they were playing 3rd stringers…, sCam was playing against 2 starters on the D Line and still had 120yds.. dude is pathetic. Pathers are lucky Sherman dropped a pick that would have gone to the house. Lucky for Panthers to stay so close.
