Titans take it to the Steelers in Pittsburgh

Tennessee Titans v Pitsburgh Steelers Getty Images

The Titans had the ugliest start to the season you’ll ever see on Sunday in Pittsburgh, as returner Darius Reynaud picked up the opening kickoff at the 1-yard line and then kneeled into the end zone for a safety. But after that, it was the Steelers who were ugly.

Pittsburgh took a 2-0 lead on Reynaud’s bonehead play, but it was all Titans from then on, as the Steelers’ offense was horrendous and the Titans won 16-9.

The Steelers lost center Maurkice Pouncey to an early knee injury, and their offense was terrible all game. Ben Roethlisberger threw for just 191 yards on 21-of-33 passing, and his first touchdown pass didn’t come until late in the fourth quarter, when the game was all but over.

Tennessee’s offense wasn’t anything to write home about, either: Jake Locker went 11-for-20 for 125 yards, while Chris Johnson picked up just 70 yards on 25 carries. But the Titans had no interceptions and no fumbles, while the Steelers had one of each, and Tennessee did enough to win an ugly game.

For the Titans, this win wasn’t particularly impressive, but they’ll gladly take a 1-0 start to the season. The Steelers need to fix their offense in a hurry.

Ben has no chance of making it a full season taking that kind of a beating. He looks older and slower these days, and it’s only week 1. The Titans were flying around the ball all day, and whatever the Steelers averaged on the ground was paltry. The Steelers are void of any play makers at the skill positions, and their fans booed them and started clearing out in the third quarter. Probably to watch the Pirates who put up more offense.

The same ‘fans’ who never miss an opportunity to tell you about all of their rings.

I can’t remember the last time the entire AFC North went winless in the opening week if ever.

As a Steelers fan, I thought the most insulting thing was my team posting this message on Facebook when we were losing 16-2:

“Congrats to Big Ben for surpassing 30,000 career passing yards!”

Seriously? Does the Steelers organization think we care that Roethlisberger is setting personal records when the team hasn’t scored a single offensive point on an opening day following a no-win preseason after going 8-8? What’s happened to these guys? What’s happened to “The standard is the standard”? I can handle losing games, but total organizational cluelessness is discouraging.

  16. halftermguv says: Sep 8, 2013 4:17 PM

Hats off to Tennessee, their run game was very good today.

Steelers had their chances; on the opening play (after the safety) Sanders drops a deep ball and later Dwyer fumbles running in for a TD.

Radio broadcast noted that Steelers defense looked gassed late in the 2nd quarter. No excuse for the opening game.

Best thing you can say as a Steeler fan is the entire division lost. Offense was horrible. Yet again, NO runnung game and no protection for Ben. You can put Brady, Peyton, any other QB behind that aweful OL and they would do nothing. Not to excuse Ben but he was harrassed all game. They better find someone that can RUN the ball wirh some consistency and give Ben a break. Hope Pouncy can come back. Only one game, but what a stinker on offense.

  34. southernpatriots says: Sep 8, 2013 4:54 PM

I haven’t had an opportunity to watch the Steelers in awhile now, but what I saw of them today, did not look good. If Ben was a young man, it would be hard on him to continue through the season to take such a pounding. The Steelers looked slow and/or tired. They need some help.

My Saints beat the Dirty Birds….again. Somehow we found our defense for the final Falcons’ play to intercept in the end zone. Bend, bend, but don’t break.

  35. Deb says: Sep 8, 2013 5:00 PM

    @Great Caesar’s Ghost …

Some teams have more championships, but no team has more Super Bowl wins. And yes, it is an achievement worth celebrating. Four Super Bowl wins were a lot of comfort during the 26-year wait for number five. I’m sure six would be a lot of comfort if we had to wait another 26 years for the seventh. You’ll find real Steelers fans are loyal and patient.

Besides, those rings must be powerful. Just look at how much bitterness they manage to spark among fans of other teams LOL

  36. steelers88 says: Sep 8, 2013 5:02 PM

  44. jmblosser82 says: Sep 8, 2013 5:20 PM

I wouldn’t say they were dominated, altho I live in a different market and didn’t see the game. But the defense held strong, Ben had a decent game…no run game or pass blocking. The raven fans on the other hand talked up their team as the best defense ever assembled, the super elite passer in Flacco, and the best RB tandem in the league, the defense gave up 7 TD passes and that offense clearly disappeared in the second half again.

It’s always a great day when the Pittsburgh Steelers lose – and knowing that their pathetic and league most disgusting fans will have shame to endure for a week is even better – they’ll be crying their eyes out in their urine yellow towels.

Just remember Steeler’s fans – the Titans suck. And you just lost to them – and remember the Redskins dismantled your offensive line in the preseason like you had 10 year old girls playing.

I sense that the Steelers will be experiencing a long season and with just a bit more karma payback could be looking at hte first pick overall in the draft.

King if double standards Raven fans are. Your fan base said it doesn’t matter if you lose by 5 or 20, still only 1 loss. Pittsburgh has no playmakers. Well to be blunt your team sucked on the whole. Your backs averaged less the 3 YPC, Flacco managed 10 points in each half, Broncos gifted them 7 by a muffed punt. You defense could’ve gave up 50+ points, The only thing that saved the game clinching pick 6 was an idiot. Your monstrous defense with the mighty pass rush gave up 7 pass TDs. This national viewing for a team all if raven nation said was going to repeat is shameful.
Ben on the other had an average game, there was very little blocking and no run game. The defense held strong giving up only 1 TD. Give Ben a line that can block a little better, a healthy Heath, and that offense will be better.

Whoever said Haley needs the boot, your an idiot. Yea the offense managed 7 points, but the line is like Swiss cheese and the RBs managed 30 yards. They need a new RB coach, new RB, and a new line coach.

Guys and gals its week 1 and the steelers are in the same place the rest if the north is, 1st.

You didn’t even see the Steelers game … because you “live in a different market.” That’s hilarious…
This decline started in 2011, and there’s no end in sight. Roethlisberger had a line last season that could “block a little better,” and he also had Heath Miller for 15 games, all of which added up to an 8-8 record and a 22nd-ranked scoring offense against the weakest schedule in the league.
This team is poorly coached and thin on depth in several key areas, all of which means the Steelers are in for a rough next few seasons.

This entire team is a nothing. That’s the bad news. The good news is they are tied for first place.

Anyhow, more of the same. Tomorrow, their defense could be rated one of the best in the NFL. That’s the illusion. The reality is they are a toothless lion. Zero turnovers. Average-good defenses force punts. Great defenses get turnovers. Their defense is average. Don’t let the rankings fool you.

The Steelers offense is terrible. Two turnovers. Both Ben’s fault. Can’t hand the ball off into the RBs chest and you can’t throw ints.

Titans won the way you win in the NFL. Points off of turnovers. That was the difference in the game…just like it is in almost every game.

I watched every game last 2 seasons, Sunday ticket is great. Don’t have directtv in my temporary residence until I get my house built. Just because the line only gave up 37 sacks last year does not mean they were good at blocking, the run game was horrid, looks to be worse this year. Ben missed 3 games, they lost 2 of them. The defense gave up the lead in 2 of the 3 first away games. Your ravens started 9-2 and nearly crapped the bed and nearly made the playoffs and several bad calls and horrible plays later your team used up all their luck and won the SB. Your team will not repeat, I am not even convinced they will make the playoffs. Steelers will be in the hunt for a wildcard spot but it will be a cold day in hell before then win the SB this year.
Your old washed up WR that your godly GM let go for next to nothing, that allowed your team to sign defensive players that vastly improve your defense that were historically bad Thursday, caught 13 passes for 208 yards and a TD, my teams receiver had 1 catch for 13 yards that they didn’t miss. Heath will be back healthy and strong like he’s always been.

Average age on the Steelers’s active roster is below that of both teams who played for the SB last year and a sizable chunk of others that were in the 2012 playoffs. The team has serious issues, but being old isn’t one of them. If you’re going to sputter out garbage simply because you read other people saying it and don’t want to put into the effort forth to think for yourself, at least make sure that said garbage has some factual basis.

How many yards rushing did the Steelers have today, and what was the YPC? Oh that was also Ben’s fault, right citizen/bobz? Today, Tom Brady couldn’t have won the game with the way the OL and RBs played. Grad or Landry? Oh come on. Did you watch the game at all? The whole offense, the coaching, stunk. Not just Ben.

  81. 1mommicked1 says: Sep 8, 2013 8:56 PM

I am a steelers fan, but some of the bone-headed personnel moves are coming back to haunt us. also, the team needs to learn to get rid of hobbled players.

Roethlisberger missed three and a half games last season and the Steelers won two of them. They were 6-6 with him and 2-2 without him. Why must you Roethlisberger Apologists embellish? Keep it real.

    southcarolinamike:
The Steelers’ defense allowed 14 points today, and that should be good enough to win ANY NFL game. His a lesson in football 101: Offenses are paid to score and defenses are paid to prevent scores. If the defense has to win each and every game, why pay a QB $100 million?

Read what I posted. I said the TEAM is in decline. Has been in decline since 2011. Roethlisberger couldn’t score with better teams, so he certainly isn’t going to score with this team… He’s the worst red-zone QB in the league. Has been since 2008.

    @jmblosser82 …

bobzilla can be aggravating at times, but he is a lifelong Steelers fan, not a Ravens fan. As bad as things are right now, there’s no sense fighting among ourselves.

jm, the offense was a mess today. I disagree with bob on what Ben brings to the team and has meant to the team. But I agree that Ben has not fully lived up to his potential since the playoff run leading to SBXL. Since SBXLIII, his mistakes have significantly outnumbered his flashes of brilliance. I thought Haley’s offense might make a difference. After today, I’m questioning everyone from Art II down that isn’t on LeBeau’s staff. It’s beginning to feel a lot like 1986.

  85. jmblosser82 says: Sep 8, 2013 9:38 PM

Bobzilla, every member of raven nation wants to blame Ben for everything. Yea he had a $100 million contract, but that was over 8 years not the over payment of $120 million over 6 years for your QB. A QB who is very inconsistent, who looked horrid against a defense that was without the 3 best players from last season, 1 due to injury, 1 due to suspension, and 1 who is on your team, who was very quiet after all the hype from your fellow idiotic fan buddies. Ben hasn’t had a running game since the year aft Bettis retired. Mendenhall had flashes, I think back to back 1000 yard seasons, but when you play 16 games that’s unacceptable. Ben just started his 10th season, crossed the 30000 yard career mark, that’s with missing 16 or so games over his career. He missed 3 1/2 games last year and still had as good or better numbers then your golden child. How did he do Thursday night? That’s right about 180 garbage time yards with a garbage time TD. He played well in e first, he helped put 10 points on the bored and walker helped put 7 more on there for ya. Second half when the game still mattered he managed anger 3. Yea Ben put 7 up, may have been garbage time, but he had 40 yards rushing to help him out. He can not do everything on offense, not one in steeler nation claimed that, but he is the teams best chance in winning. Flacco is hailed as the second coming in Baltimore, all of raven nation was just fine with trading away Boldin, Pitta injury you all till felt fine. Aftert the preseason blow out of the Bucs you was ready to crown me as repeaters, he came out to start the season how he ended last year, disappeared when it mattered.

  86. scoobies05 says: Sep 8, 2013 9:46 PM

jm…the ravens got whooped this week and boldin was a beast today. no questioning either of those things. now quit making excuses and doing your what ifs, especially about last year. thats over and whether the ravens were one punt return away or not, they won it all. as for this year, after one week both our teams looked bad. but the ravens can score points so my money is on them to have a better season this year

  87. jmblosser82 says: Sep 8, 2013 9:55 PM

The poor line is not excuss, the anemic run game is not an excuss, they are facts. I am not overreacting about with week 1 performance, but between the 2 defenses, the ravens have a lot more work to do, of the 2 offenecses, Pittsburgh has a bit more work to do. Ben may have bad red zone numbers but he has no run game to take any of the pressure off. You put Ben on your team, Baltimore would have more rings, you put Joe on Pittsburgh, he’d be out of the league by now.

  88. stoogy says: Sep 8, 2013 10:06 PM

Looks like they might be in the running for the number one pick in april. Maybe then they can draft a franshise QB. Steelers look like they are one of the worst teams in the NFL. Even the bills, Raiders and Jets look better then them. The Jags should give the steelers a run for the number one pick though.

    Some questions:
Do they ever fire a coach at the beginning of the season?

Is Haley’s ‘plan’ too difficult for all to learn?

    Would the Steelers replace Roethlisberger?

Are the Steelers doing a running game or a passing game?

bob, I agree 14 points is enough to win any NFL game. However, we have seen this from the Steelers defense as recently as last year. Whether it is a high scoring game or a low scoring game, they don’t get turnovers so they don’t impact game in meaningful ways. Games are won and lost on turnover margin as it is the single largest predictor of whether or not one team scores more than another. Points off of turnovers are everything and the defense doesn’t create them. Facts are facts and they created ZERO turnovers yesterday.

Good question about why the Steelers pay Ben $100 million. I’m not sure why a franchise who insists on fielding a team designed to play in the 1980s would pay any QB $100 million. This franchise from ownership on down to the players on the field isn’t making very good decisions.

If turnovers are the single largest predictor of wins, the loss yesterday can only be placed squarely on the QB’s shoulders because both turnovers were his fault. The facts are the facts. He handed the ball off in the RBs chest instead of his belly causing a fumble. He threw an int in a situation where the defense did nothing special and worst of all, TN scored off of the turnover.

If the Steelers are going to do any better than 6-10 this season (I’m being generous), they need to do better than trade punts. The defense has to create turnovers and the offense has to score off of them. God forbid if NFL.com published anything useful to look at like “average starting position”, but I would be willing to bet the Steelers had a far worse average starting position than TN. Trading punts worked in the 1990s, which is what the Steelers organization wants and has built this team to do, but it doesn’t work in 2013.

Ravens scored 17 points in the first half Thursday. That would have been more than enough to bury the Steelers today. So funny that Steelers’ fans were so full of glee Thursday and tonight have their mouths full of crow. These fans are the laughingstock of the NFL. I know I can’t stop laughing at them.

    @madeline2009 …

No one has forgotten that the 49ers and Cowboys each have five Super Bowls and that the 49ers especially are again contending. What those teams have done or may do doesn’t diminish what the Steelers have accomplished.

Coaches have been fired at varying points in a season, but the Steelers don’t typically operate that way. However, anything is possible.

No, Haley’s plan is not too difficult to learn.

Replace Roethlisberger with what? Gradkowski might mix things up a bit, but if he were good enough to be a starter in the NFL, he’d be a starter in the NFL. Landry Jones is a rookie and unlikely to fare better behind that pathetic line than someone of Ben’s experience and mobility. Replacing Ben wouldn’t fix the offense.

Successful teams balance the running and passing games. It’s difficult to succeed without a ground game.

What a pathetic performance by the Steelers! All the Steelers fans that couldn’t shut up about the Ravens loss but let’s look at the difference: first, we were forced to open on the road against arguably the best team in the nfl. We were in control of the game the entire first half. The Ravens can pretty much blame their loss on a handful of players that suck n have no buisness on a nfl roster at this point. The Steelers however wer just pathetic. Terrible in every aspect of the game. This coming from a team that FAILED to make the playoffs, even in a bad year for the AFC. You lost to the Titans for christs sake! THE TITANS!! Even with your lame ass “we sucked last year schedule” you’ll still suck this year! Steeler fans r a joke. Next time wait to see what your team does b4 u have a orgasm n go online to comment about it just cause the CHAMPS lost a tough week one game!!!

Any quarterback who has thrown for over 30,000 yards but has just 192 career TD passes, that QB is fortunate to have played on a defensive-minded team. Simple math.
You people have cried for the past nine seasons about lousy offensive lines. Don’t look now, but Mike Tomlin has finally given you an O-line worthy of your tears.

    Jimmy:
I can honestly say that I don’t spend a great deal of time thinking about the Ravens. Frankly, I couldn’t care less about them. Sorry to crush your ego.
