Steelers sign Shayne Graham

Shayne Graham AP

The Steelers have made the official announcement that running back Jonathan Dwyer and offensive lineman Fernando Velasco are joining the team, confirming information that’s been previously reported while also adding another new face.

Pittsburgh has signed veteran kicker Shayne Graham in addition to Dwyer and Velasco. The team also announced that center Maurkice Pouncey, linebacker Larry Foote and running back LaRod Stephens-Howling have all been placed on season-ending injured reserve. All three were injured in Sunday’s loss to the Titans.

Graham’s addition is necessary because Shaun Suisham hurt his hamstring on Sunday and could miss a few weeks while he recovers. The Steelers are the 14th different team that has employed the well-traveled Graham at one point or another over the course of his career. Signing with the Steelers means that all four AFC North teams are now represented on that list.

He made 31-of-38 field goals for the Texans last season, but was cut by the Browns when they dropped to 53 players last month.

No doubt he was picked up to get all the secrets of the Cincinatti offense. Gotta think the kicking/punting game made up 75% of their offense, since signing Dalton.

Sorry this is necessary, but glad he was around to be signed.

@ravensbob … that was funny. I think you guys and the Bengals are in better shape than we are, but what a sad way to open the season for our division. I just hope someone’s there to represent when January rolls around. Guess that’s the SEC side of me. We can hate each other, but we still need to be better than everyone else ;)

Lol! Crown, your such a hoot! And so original too! By the way, Dalton & Graham were never on the same roster……but if your correct in saying he was 75% of our offense, maybe you could take some hints from him…..considering your scored a whole TWO POINTS until about 4 minutes left!
stay educated Crown, you really do make Steelernation alot easier to Mock & laugh @!

  12. dcapettini says: Sep 9, 2013 6:26 PM

Hey guys, one game. If losing the opener ruined your season, the Pats would have 2 fewer SB trophies. All that said, the Steelers really should have done something more about their O-line in the off season. With Pouncy out, we’ll be calling ‘Big Ben’ “Big Bruise” by the end of the season.I know they had cap problems, but hey, Ben is the best player they have on either side of the ball.

  13. Deb says: Sep 9, 2013 6:34 PM

    @dcapettini …

We have addressed our offensive line–unfortunately, we lost our offensive line coach to the HC position at UTEP, and the new guy put in a new system that clearly isn’t effective with our personnel. And Ben is not the best player we have on either side of the ball. Even with his career on the downswing, Troy Polamalu is the best player on the team and a sure first-ballot Hall of Famer.

Hey Bengalguy, steeler nation is easy to mock? Check the record books bud. 6 Super Bowls, 8 conference titles and 20 division titles looks a hack of a lot better than 0 Super Bowls, 2 conference titles and 7 division titles. Mock us and laugh at us if you will, but at the end of the day you’re still a bengals fan and that’s sad. I believe there was a 15 year period in there where you didn’t see the playoffs either. Bring back Boomer!!! Dalton sucks!

  16. Joemontanaflacco says: Sep 9, 2013 7:01 PM

Unless he can kick an 80 yard field goal, you’ll see him only once a game.

  17. alphawolf01 says: Sep 9, 2013 7:08 PM

Afc north is still the top division in the conference but the steelers are fading fast. Your biggest issue is Mike Tomlin. He inherited a Bill Cowher team that was stacked and any coach could win with. Now that a few years have passed and your star players are old/left he hasn’t had the foresight and talent to evaluate and prepare for this. He is the the new Norv Turner without the offense. Luckily Dick Leboeu is a genius and will keep the d as good as it can be. Until you move on from Tomlin you will continue to decay.

  18. mibengal says: Sep 9, 2013 7:14 PM

Used to like Graham until the year the Bengals franchised him for nearly 2 million and he was actually upset. Lost all respect for him after that. Since then, he’s been on 4-5 different teams and can’t seem to stick. Good luck with him Steelers.

I think the biggest reason for their fading is injuries. The Bengals fought that for years with high draft picks getting injured. As much as the Bteelers have tried to reload their o-line, injuries keep preventing it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no Squealer fan but Thomlin is NOT a bad coach. Sometimes sh*t just happens.

Just to set the record straight. Bill Cowher’s record the last season he coached (2006) was 8-8. Obviously, you a biased Tomlin hater who is misinformed.

Ravens will win this division. Bengals lost to a good but not great Bears & for team that supposedly has such a “great” defense they couldn’t get not a single sack against Jay Cuter??? Steelers scored 9 points at home in a lost against a very mediocre Titians. The Browns held the Dolphins to like 7 rushing yards at home but still found a way to lose by 2 TD’s. The Ravens went up to Denver to face Peyton Manning & a revenge hungry Bronco team. That defense still got Manning 3x & they looked like a team with a lot if new parts playing its 1st game of the season….that can be fixed by seasons end….

Hopefully Clowney drops like Jarvis did. And then focus on TE and line.

They haven’t been able to protect Ben for a few years now. My fear is that he won’t last the season. I can’t remember ever seeing a Steelers offensive line so bad. And we’ve had a few pretty bad ones. I love the Steelers but this could be a long season. People don’t like to hear this but we’ve lost our identity. Have to get back to running the ball, and defense. That’s who we are. Can’t do that until the offensive line issues are resolved. That could be a long time coming. Bengals are next. Let’s see what happens. Either way, always bleed black and gold. We will be back.

  31. jtbsteeler says: Sep 10, 2013 1:00 PM

Joemontanaflacco, it took you 4-5 days to reappear “automagically” after that National TV debacle. You went into hiding. No Steeler loss can extinguish that absolute thrashing that Peyton Manning put on your “rebuilt, will be better” defense. 7 TD passes.

You’ve slithered in here out of that hole you were hiding in.

YOur defense is 32nd and will finish in the low 20’s. Worse than last season. If I’m the Browns I would run all day. You have nothing to hang your hat on. YOur oline gave up 4 sacks, and Ray Rice is starting to get frustrated.

200+yds by Bolden, 500+ yds given up by the Raven D – Trade of the century by Ozzie Newsome

  32. stillers213 says: Sep 10, 2013 1:10 PM

Tomlin – how about trading a couple of those worthless TE’s for O-line depth? It’s not as if you had 8 months to do it already. :(

  33. scoobies05 says: Sep 10, 2013 1:41 PM

great analysis jb. now tell us once again about how great tje steelers are…wait. you cant. i will bet you the raven defense has a better ranking at the end of the season than the steeler offense and the ravens finish better than the steelers

  34. Joemontanaflacco says: Sep 10, 2013 2:27 PM

jb and VAredskinsfan are too busy making up rules for everyone else to follow. I’m sure the Steelers will finish higher in one category — they’ll have the most fans jumping up and down whenever a Raven, Bengal, or Brown suffers a painful injury.

I think it’s safe to say everyone will be doing demi plies on the Steelers’ future playoff hopes. All except Steeler fans who remain camped out at emergency rooms ready to strike up the band whenever a Raven is brought in for an MRI.

    Hey Sparky

Browns fan here; it does not take rocket scientist know that the Steelers won superbowls after the 1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 2005, 2008 seasons. The Steelers fans have every right to trumpet that they have 6 rings. If the Browns had won them I would do the same.

Bit of advice: you may want to arm yourself with the facts before opening your mouth to talk smack about a division rival unless you enjoy looking like an imbecile in this forum.

Report comment I think it’s safe to say you will be spending about 18-21 days hiding in your room this fall. Just tell mom to stock up on the ramen noodles and dr pepper. Hey Browns’ fan

I said “[y]our team doesn’t even have six rings.” So, there are players on the current Steelers’ team who played in every Superbowl? Maybe we do need a rocket scientist to explain that one since I’m sure time travel is involved.
