Jets’ Wilkerson: “We’re going to go to Foxboro and get this win”

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v New York Jets Getty Images

The Jets are two-touchdown underdogs against the Patriots on Thursday night, but Jets defensive end Mo Wilkerson likes his team’s chances.

Wilkerson told Bob Glauber of Newsday that he believes the Jets will knock off the Patriots and earn their second win of the season.

“If our game plan is as good as it was, I don’t see why we won’t be 2-0,” Wilkerson said. “I’m confident in our coaching staff to have a great game plan and us being 2-0.”

After Wilkerson said on WFAN that “We’re going to go to Foxboro and get this win. . . . We’re going to be 2-0,” several media outlets characterized him as guaranteeing victory. But Wilkerson said he wasn’t going so far as to pull a Joe Namath.

“I’m not saying I’m guaranteeing it, but I’m saying if we do our jobs and follow our game plan, I don’t see why we wouldn’t be 2-0,” Wilkerson said. “We had a good game plan in the first game and we won, so why wouldn’t I feel that way for this game? I’m here with these guys every day and I see all the hard work that myself and everybody else on this team is putting in. We can be a dominant defense.”

So Wilkerson isn’t guaranteeing a win, he’s just saying the Jets will win.

We had a good game plan in the first game and we won, so why wouldn’t I feel that way for this game?

You won because of a questionable call.

Too late, its already on the Pat’s locker room Bulletin Board.

So…. the coaches game-planned for a last second FG?

  4. floridaslonechargersfan says: Sep 10, 2013 11:12 AM

Why does it seem like teams always say this before playing New England? They will inevitably lose and then we get to hear about the Patriots using this quote as motivation. It’s annoying.

Now I hate the Jets more and have absolutely no respect for them.

  9. kev86 says: Sep 10, 2013 11:16 AM

It would be a major upset. Not understanding the need to talk like that with a rookie QB making his first road start. Dumb.

Love when a player has the balls to step up and say this. Now you just have to go do it.

  15. all4patriots says: Sep 10, 2013 11:19 AM

And last week some moron Bills receiver declared that there was no one on the Patriots who could guard him,

then he ended up w 3 catches for 39 yards and a key 4th quarter drop on 3rd down.

    These clowns just never learn.

  16. Nic says: Sep 10, 2013 11:19 AM

    I love the game planning:

    1. Hang your WR’s out to dry on slant routes and draw the 15 yd personal foul for hitting too hard.

    2. Scramble Geno towards the sidelines, if the defenders let up on him, cut back upfield for 7 more yds and the first down. If they push you out of bounds, crumble like a soggy graham cracker.

  19. Nic says: Sep 10, 2013 11:21 AM

All joking aside, I hope the Jets win, that way Bucs fans can feel like their team’s loss wasn’t “skyway bridge” worthy…

  20. truninerfan49 says: Sep 10, 2013 11:22 AM

There is a better chance of Gisele leaving Brady for me than the Jets going 2-0.

  21. enzo1030 says: Sep 10, 2013 11:22 AM

A Patriots team with no receivers or running backs, a sub-par secondary, and struggled against the Bills.

I wouldn’t exactly call it a “longshot” for the Jets to steal a win. Wilk and the rest of the D-Line is going to knock Brady all day, while hoping his no-name receivers get open

  22. gbrown23 says: Sep 10, 2013 11:23 AM

He was asked by the reporter specifically if they would be 2-0, wtf is he supposed to say?

  23. Nofoolnodrool says: Sep 10, 2013 11:23 AM

Is this guy related to joeflaccomontana…..what an idiot. The Pats don’t talk trash like the Jets and Ravens….they just make you eat your words.

  24. nunpuncher says: Sep 10, 2013 11:23 AM

In other words Wilkerson is banking on 1 really stupid penalty to win the game. Not likely to happen two weeks in a row.

  25. 40easter says: Sep 10, 2013 11:23 AM

So basically, he said he was confident that they could win.

And with that info you figured it would be a good idea to create an article title that was both untrue and redundant.

I hope you guys don’t introduce yourselves to people as journalists.

  26. dsigrey says: Sep 10, 2013 11:24 AM

So the game plan was to have a great linebacker for the other team make a dumb mistake so you can kick a field goal to win the game??? Brilliant! Josh Freeman is not Tom Brady…

  27. jetsmmt says: Sep 10, 2013 11:27 AM

I see nothing wrong about what he said. The media is twisting his words.

  28. micknangold says: Sep 10, 2013 11:28 AM

Yeah, saying you’re gonna win is crazy, right? It’s almost like these guys are competitive and want to, and think they will, win every game they play. How whacky is that?

If Big Mo and the rest of the defense is as dominant this game as they was in the first, the Jets have a shot. Remember that but for a Stephen Hill drop the Jets would have beaten the Pats in NE last year. I think they’ll probably lose, but I don’t think it’s out of the question they pull off an upset.

And if you think the Jets only won because of the late call, you most likely ONLY saw that single play on ESPN or NFLN. I’m a fan, I watched the whole game – the Bucs couldn’t do a thing on offense. They had a single impressive drive. Their other TD was a gimme after a Geno Smith fumble. The Jets completely shut down Doug Martin – he had one solid run the whole game. The offense played pretty well considering our lack of talent, and every other play someone came out of the game because Goldson was killing people out there. Yeah, the late hit helped them, no doubt – but it was a 2 point game at that point and they still could have got into field goal range and out of bounds on the next play.

  29. gottem13x says: Sep 10, 2013 11:28 AM

I’m sure this will get blown out of proportion because it is the Jets but I have nothing wrong with it. What would any player on any team be playing for if they said “we are going up to Foxborough, to get the crap kicked out of us” Raiders and Bills were both two score dogs and both games came down to last minute drives. It’s the NFL, anything can happen…

  30. southpaw2k says: Sep 10, 2013 11:28 AM

Hey, if Devin McCourty commits a personal foul for unnecessary roughness late in the game against Geno Smith like Lavonte David did, allowing the Jets to kick a game-winning field goal, then yeah, the Jets have a chance to win Thursday night and be 2-0.

Oh wait, that implies the Jets would be down by fewer than 3 points at the end of the game. Never mind.

  31. heisthejuan says: Sep 10, 2013 11:29 AM

The first Pats/Jets game has been hard fought every year since Rex arrived. Both teams have issues, so it should be another close one.

  32. jwcarlson says: Sep 10, 2013 11:30 AM

Patriots looked very beatable on Sunday. Jets level beatable… I highly doubt it.

The only thing the Jets are doing by winning is dropping farther down the 2014 Draft Board. That is not a playoff team.

  33. kgun80 says: Sep 10, 2013 11:31 AM

I would have laughed this off a week ago. But watching the mighty NE Patriots almost lose to my Bills showed a lot.
Their receiving options are mid range at best. Their D is maybe a little above average. Amendola just can’t stay on the field. I don’t see them gashing the Jets like they did the young Bills D in the run game. They barely beat the Bills and they were down thier two best players in the defensive backfield( Byrd and Gilmore). I wouldn’t pick the Jets to win but I wouldn’t be shocked if they do beat the Pats.

  34. the8man says: Sep 10, 2013 11:34 AM

A win? I dunno. But the spread seems kind of high. I don’t know how you give any NFL team 13 or 14 points.

So that’s what it takes to get half the action on the Jets?

  35. weepingjebus says: Sep 10, 2013 11:35 AM

The Jets continue to break my heart. They somehow found a way to keep Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez together. And now they won’t play Sanchez! It’s like breaking up Abbott and Costello. This crime against national comedy must not stand.

  36. lombardisshineinfoxborough says: Sep 10, 2013 11:35 AM

I for one do not understand why the Pats are so heavily favored. I hate the big mouth jets as much as anybody, but they’ve got some good young players on defense and a QB that looks decent, albeit after only one game. Add in the fact that the Pats will be without Gronk, possibly Amendola and their young receivers looked lost at times on Sunday, and I expect this to be a tough game.

  37. 69finfan says: Sep 10, 2013 11:36 AM

Having a good game plan and executing it are obviously 2 extremely different things, but good luck there Mo.

  38. browns627 says: Sep 10, 2013 11:37 AM

if i played for the jets i would beat wilkersons a$$# for saying that…. just what you want to do, give BB more of reason to work late and add to his game plan.

  39. chargerdillon says: Sep 10, 2013 11:39 AM

You can steal one from the Bucs, that’s understandable to believe.

You won’t steal a win from Brady and Bellicheck. You’re going to have to earn that one, and that aint happening

  40. browns627 says: Sep 10, 2013 11:40 AM

  41. mistrezzrachael says: Sep 10, 2013 11:43 AM

Again…the jets..the armpit of the NFL…do SOMETHING…and then open their mouths like they are NFL’s elite….when reality is they are a bottom 5 alltime franchise.

Can they win?? Sure, but NE would have to mess up badly, anyone can win. Though w/jets..last 45 years they’ve been extremely loud doormats.

    Wilkerson..do SOMETHING, win something..before you chirp…Damn parasites.

Happy 45th anniversary jet fans..and watch it last ALOT longer.

  42. jbaxt says: Sep 10, 2013 11:46 AM

I didn’t see one quote in the article with him saying; “we will be 2-0″. He says we should be, if we play like we can, if the coaches prepare, not once we WILL. Go ahead and add that he’s white with a Hispanic father. I hate the media!

  43. wbkev24 says: Sep 10, 2013 11:46 AM

  46. micknangold says: Sep 10, 2013 11:47 AM

At this point in his career, I doubt Belichick needs any outside motivation. He might use it to motivate his players, but him personally? He’ll put the work in no matter what. He has too much respect for the game not to. I still hate him though.

  50. brokentreehousemusic says: Sep 10, 2013 11:54 AM

If the Pats have ever been vulnerable, it’s right this moment. Short week, tons of injuries, rookies, and an ugly win against Buffalo that got a key starter benched.

That said, the Jets will find a way to lose.

  51. habsfanatic says: Sep 10, 2013 11:55 AM

I like the confidence out of Wilkerson but anyone who watched the first game saw that the Bucs were completely disorganized on offense, with serious frustration evident among players and coaches… the Jets really had no business winning that game and there’s no way the Pats will play that way at home.

  52. azarkhan says: Sep 10, 2013 11:55 AM

  55. hehateme2 says: Sep 10, 2013 11:58 AM

I’m fine with a Jets win. Whatever. It would be entertaining to say the least.

However, I’m going to need Brady to go ahead and get 300 yards and a couple of TD’s.

  60. chiadam says: Sep 10, 2013 12:06 PM

Of course they can win. Anyone can win any game they play. This is the new NFL, where the Lombardi goes to the team that stinks the least at the right time (see: Ravens, Baltimore).

  61. skiier4384 says: Sep 10, 2013 12:06 PM

    Jets 14, Patriots 17

Patriots are the better team, but the Jets have an underrated defense (though their offense obviously is horrible). I’m looking around at the objective sites PFP, F Outsiders, and they all think the Jets have a top 5 defense. We’ll see though, they spent a lot of picks on the defense since the Sanchez pick in 2009 and they still might be a little too young. Not expecting much this year, but I think there’s some upside to their team.

  62. albanyjints says: Sep 10, 2013 12:07 PM

  66. svn2011 says: Sep 10, 2013 12:17 PM

Iam a pats fan and this is so trivial. Media just makes a big deal about nothing.

  67. bullcharger says: Sep 10, 2013 12:20 PM

The Bills are better than people think… Their defense is actually good and Manuel had a good first start. They will surprise some teams. The Patriots still should have beat them by at least 14. 3 uncharacteristic turnovers. The Patriots were the only team (as of yesterday) to lose the turnover battle yet win their game in week 1. It’s not easy to do.

The Patriots certainly are vulnerable this week now. Vereen is out, Gronk unlikely to play, Amendola really should sit, Sudfeld has a hamstring, Ridley is fumbling. It’s not goint to be a pretty game.

That said, it doesn’t really matter if the patriots lose to the Jets much. Winning 6 games in the division is not important, only winning 4 and getting the division title. The Jets have a chance this week, but when the Patriots get healthy, and the rookies get some experience there will be no chance.

  68. wbkev24 says: Sep 10, 2013 12:26 PM

  69. fanfrommontreal says: Sep 10, 2013 12:31 PM

  70. carterious1 says: Sep 10, 2013 12:31 PM

People who say it was a questionable call have no idea what they are talking about. The player doesn’t have to be physically out of bounds for it to be a late hit. Geno had no intention on gaining more yards and was pulling up out of bounds when he got pushed. It was a no brainer call to me. If that was any other QB like Brady or Brees the call wouldn’t even be questioned, but since its the Jets everyone is up in arms. Get over it. They won and and about 99% of the trolls on the site can’t accept it.

    Few things about this…

    1. “We had a good game plan in the first game and we won…”

That’s terrible. You got lucky because a very good linebacker had a moment of stupidity.

    2. The Pats obviously weren’t clicking on offense last week, why would that change over a short week with only a walkthrough? Especially if Amendola isn’t able to play.

  77. ejudge44 says: Sep 10, 2013 1:04 PM

  78. farvegnugen says: Sep 10, 2013 1:04 PM

Even the title of this dumb article misrepresents what Wilkerson said.

“If our game plan is as good as it was, I don’t see why we won’t be 2-0.” is vastly different than “We will beat the Patriots and be 2-0″.

  82. iamapatsfan says: Sep 10, 2013 1:09 PM

Son of a… accidently hit submit, sorry for the extra post.

    3. The media is twisting his words for obvious reason. Most people see this as a sleeper of a Thursday night game, but the NFL obviously wants to drum it up, so twist words to make it seem more rivalrous than most think.

However, most thought the Buffalo game would be a cakewalk, and it took a last gasp FG. Rex’s D is always good, and with the Pats O not near where it has been, maybe that’ll be enough to keep the Jets in the game. Just have to hope (for Pats fans) that the NE Defense will be able to stop Geno Smith. Oh, and not have 3 turnovers on Offense.

And finally, what the heck else is he going to say? “No, the Patriots have been so strong for so long, we just write this one off and move onto next week, at least until Brady retires…” Stupid media.

  85. kgun80 says: Sep 10, 2013 1:14 PM

    @bullcharger

I agree the Bills are better then people think. The Pats would have lost if the refs didn’t provide little nudges to put them over the top. 2 drive killing penalties for illegal hands to the face against o linemen. One was a phantom call.. And the other was a defensive player blitzing who tried to get under the online men on an edge move. Deny it all you like Pats fans but I have never seen a team get more favorable timely calls from the refs.
This is for all the NE fans saying the Jets won because of a bad call(it was the correct call)…. So what?! You have been making a living off the Refs for a decade.

  86. newjerseygiants says: Sep 10, 2013 1:16 PM

There’s a reason you never hear the Patriots talk about how they’re planning on winning a game…great teams let their play do the talking; teams like the Jets feel the need to talk because they can’t play up to that level…and the Patriots don’t need any “bulletin board material”; no team should need any more motivation to go out and win a game

The only reason you win this game is because you can cheat at home and your playing a crappy rookie QB. You still will probably need some help to win it is the sad thing.

I like and understand a player getting excited about a win, but come on! The Jets player have made themselves the athletic equivalent of Cowboys fans in they run their mouths and suffer for it. Just play some football guys!

If intimidation is your game plan, then you need a better one.

That organization is an embarrassment to the NFL.

    Which team?

Love when a player has the balls to step up and say this.

It doesn’t take balls to open your mouth before you even step on the field. Anyone can do that.

Even without Amendola and Vereen, (and likely not Gronk either) the Pats will still probably persevere – if nothing more than on the basis of QB’ing and HC’ing.

Now on the other hand, if the Fins had the same jets horseshoe up their butt up in Foxboro on Oct 27, I’d put their chances of coming out on top at better than 60%

  100. tindeaux says: Sep 10, 2013 3:04 PM

this guy fits well with rex ryan. talking a bunch of smack and showed nothing on the field.
at some point, they need to learn that talk is cheap. just play!

Guess Rex is a great coach. How the heck do you game plan that the other team’s defense will make a dunderhead play, giving their kicker an extra 15 yds to make a FG? And why would you want to game plan that the kicker needs to make a FG to win a game anyway?

    LMAO

  104. throwinbows7 says: Sep 10, 2013 3:49 PM

This is a new season. Patriots should be the favorite but lets not forget that the Jets usually play the Pats tough in Foxboro. Ryan has done well versus Brady (Playoff win @ foxboro, OT loss last year, etc.) and the Pats are limited on offensive weapons. Jets catching Pats at the right time.

  105. furnhole says: Sep 10, 2013 3:56 PM

The only reason, and I mean ONLY REASON the Jets won that game was because of an idiotic play by Ladonte David that handed them the game. The Pats will crush the Jets.

To the guy who said Wilkerson hasn’t produced on the field – he was rated the 2nd best 3-4 lineman in the league last year. Good call though.

To those who took the time to create account handles with anti-Jets names – wow your lives suck.

Should be a good game. Brady is still among the best, but what better time for the Jets to get the Pats – early in the season (less time for NE to find its offensive identity and less film on Geno), no Gronkowski, no Vereen, possibly no Amendola. Perhaps this has an impact?

  108. andrederay says: Sep 10, 2013 7:16 PM

Slow your roll Wilkerson, you nearly lost the game against a mediocre Tampa team. And the Bills were not able to close out the win in a close game over the Pats and the Bills are better than the Jets. And don’t you realize when you create bulletin board material for New England they win almost 99% of the time.
