Arians: Peterson vs. Megatron is best corner covering best receiver

Detroit Lions v Arizona Cardinals Getty Images

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians says the NFL’s two best players at their respective positions will be going head to head on Sunday when the Lions come to town.

Arians said today that he considers his own cornerback, Patrick Peterson, to be the best in the NFL, and he considers Lions receiver Calvin Johnson to be the best in the NFL.

According to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic, Arians described the matchup as “probably, in my opinion, the best corner in the league is going against the best receiver in the league. Do we want to leave him out there one-on-one all day? No. But that’s going to happen. He’s going to have to win his share of the battles.”

Larry Fitzgerald may not feel great about his coach calling someone else the NFL’s best receiver, and Darrelle Revis and Richard Sherman are among the cornerbacks who might argue about Peterson being the best. But Peterson covering Megatron is undoubtedly one of the best individual matchups we can see in the NFL, on this Sunday or on any Sunday.

I think it is real interesting that Charles Tillman doesn’t get mentioned as possibly the best corner n the league.

    True that

  4. topcommenter says: Sep 11, 2013 6:28 PM

    Peterson the best CB?

I want some of whatever he’s smoking!

  5. rufusporter says: Sep 11, 2013 6:28 PM

More like the 5th or 6th best cb but who can blame a coach for trying to pump up his players.

  6. seatownballers says: Sep 11, 2013 6:29 PM

Megatron is better. He’ll score on him

  7. logicalvoicesays says: Sep 11, 2013 6:29 PM

Top 5 WRs in Professional Football : Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Pierre Garcon, Steve Smith and Leonard Hankerson.
Top 5 CBs in Professional Football : Patrick Peterson, DeAngelo Hall, Jenoris Jenkins, Josh Wilson and Revis. In that order.

Speaking as a Lions fan, Patrick Peterson is indeed better than Richard Sherman, maybe Revis. He did really well against Megatron last year although he got away with an egregious hold/pass interference on his INT. No complaints though, Megatron will get another crack at him Sunday. Can’t wait.

  9. gwhempel says: Sep 11, 2013 6:35 PM

$20 says Richard Sherman says something incredibly stupid regarding this within the next 24 hours that will once again make me double check that he actually graduated from Stanford.

  10. tommyc0606 says: Sep 11, 2013 6:39 PM

i hope they leave peterson on CJ 1 on 1 so calvin could have a fantasy day

  11. zinn22 says: Sep 11, 2013 6:49 PM

Revis vs. Calvin in 2010 1 reception 13 yards.

Revis removed Calvin form the game covering him solo. The big difference with Revis is he takes on other teams best receiver with no help. Other CBs generally cover the nmber 2 and then double team guys like Calvin. Maybe Arizona will put Peterson on Calvin but he most likely will get safety help. Lets see how Peterson fairs.

Four catches for 37 yards,,,,Vikings always muzzle him. Do that and you can talk….

  13. deezenucks says: Sep 11, 2013 6:50 PM

Logical your homer-ness never ceases to amaze me. Hankerson! Two garbage time prevent d scores lol! I think Aj Green would like a word, and I can think of at least 5 more I’d put ahead of garçon even.

  14. bigbrad184 says: Sep 11, 2013 6:54 PM

Not when Peterson is covering Crabtree. In 2 games last year Crabs had 13 catches for 244 yards and 4 touchdowns.

  15. erock27 says: Sep 11, 2013 6:57 PM

    joe haden

  16. rhymenosaurus says: Sep 11, 2013 6:58 PM

I am shocked that what’s-his-face listed two Redskins in both his top 5 WR and top 5 CB lists. Shocked, I tell you.

I imagine his top 5 Centers list goes: Will Montgomery, Mike Pouncey, Kory Lichtensteiger, Max Unger and Alfred Morris.

  17. beardinals says: Sep 11, 2013 7:00 PM

As a Cardinals fan, PP has a ways to go. Did a pretty good job on Megatron last year though.

  18. erock27 says: Sep 11, 2013 7:01 PM

revis sherman joe haden peterson . in that order

  19. sweetnlow44 says: Sep 11, 2013 7:08 PM

Peterson is NOT better than Sherman. Give me a break. He may be a better athlete, but he doesn’t have the instincts that Sherman does.

  20. aldavis4president says: Sep 11, 2013 7:10 PM

Megatron, aj green, fitz, bmarsh and Andre Johnson .
Revis Peterson Sherman J.Hayden and Leon hall. In that order. You can make a case for dez and Julio but not quite yet. And same with Brandon flowers or Finnegan, but I dnt like either of them so no.

  21. orivar says: Sep 11, 2013 7:10 PM

“Megatron is better. He’ll score on him”

Who hasn’t been scored on though? It’s impossible to shut somebody down forever.

  22. torontofalcon says: Sep 11, 2013 7:13 PM

Patrick Peterson is easily the best CB, he just doesn’t get recognized because he didn’t play in a big market like Revis and he doesn’t have a big mouth like Sherman

  23. tinbender2000 says: Sep 11, 2013 7:13 PM

I started thinking logical wouldn’t know a football if it hit him in the head. Then I thought … that would explain a lot!

  24. ivanpavlov0000 says: Sep 11, 2013 7:13 PM

It’s a team sport. The only matchup that actually matters is the scoreboard.

The rules make it hard to do one on one (single man) coverage on any of the elite wide receivers. Peterson can’t cover Johnson one on one, but no one in the NFL can cover Johnson one on one.

  25. tangledupinblue12 says: Sep 11, 2013 7:14 PM

AJ Green really chewed Charles Tillman up last week (outside of the two interceptions), but I would easily put Tillman in the top 5 corners in the league. He absolutely owned and shut down Megatron last year, and I don’t say that as a Bears homer; look it up.

  26. khmerson562 says: Sep 11, 2013 7:15 PM

Mo Claiborne vs Dez Bryant is best corner vs Wr

  27. GenXJay says: Sep 11, 2013 7:18 PM

because megatron dominated last week right?

  28. tbizell says: Sep 11, 2013 7:18 PM

Leonard Hankerson isn’t even top 20 and DHall
is washed up. U must be crazy to think hankerson is better than either Julio Jones or A.J. Green. Those guys are the future of the league.

  29. expertop says: Sep 11, 2013 7:28 PM

Ever see Peterson’s attempts at tackling A.D.? Check youtube. It’s hilarious.

  30. steelers4385 says: Sep 11, 2013 7:35 PM

I just remember peterson getting stiff armed to the ground last year. Calvin cant throw the ball to himself. He will tear up peterson

  31. aaroncurryisbust says: Sep 11, 2013 7:36 PM

Patrick Peterson isn’t even the best CB in his own division #FACT #59-0 #GTFO

  32. dtownsportslions says: Sep 11, 2013 7:36 PM

Charles Tillman does the best job on Calvin and this is coming from a Lions fan. If you don’t put a safety on top of CJ, he will burn you no matter who you are.

  33. oldcat157 says: Sep 11, 2013 7:36 PM

The better strategy for the Cards is to put Peterson on the WR2 and double Calvin all day.

  34. texanfan53 says: Sep 11, 2013 7:41 PM

Only one corner single handedly shut down Calvin Johnson ……Kareem Jackson.

    #FACT

  35. ziggyjackson says: Sep 11, 2013 7:48 PM

    Leonard Hankerson this guy said!

  36. robgilman says: Sep 11, 2013 7:55 PM

    no pressure

  37. stabbymike says: Sep 11, 2013 7:59 PM

No doubt Megatron is the best receiver in the NFL & Peterson makes an argument as one of the best corners, but there are a few guys who are vying for that spot. In my opinion the best corner is Charles Tillman. After that Peterson and then Darelle Revis and Richard Sherman. The only reason Tillman and Peterson arent mentioned as the top corners is because Tillman is quite humble and people think of Peterson as more of a return man. Until Revis proves he can return to his old form and Sherman finally shuts up will i consider them the top corners.

  38. sportymorty22 says: Sep 11, 2013 8:08 PM

Peterson is definitely not the best corner. Sherman or Revis for sure. I will agree with the fact that CJ is the best WR.

  39. Bearfan54 says: Sep 11, 2013 8:26 PM

Charles Tillman already has 2 picks!! Week 1 ! He’s just getting started, plus no one I mean NO ONE strips the ball like Tillman either. Best in the league.

  40. nghtrder169 says: Sep 11, 2013 8:27 PM

Megaton is the best WR….BUT Revis is the best corner…. When Revis faced him (1on1) Megatron had 1 catch for what 8yards… And Revis has done that to a lot of WR, more than any other CB & it’s not even close

  41. gochargersgo says: Sep 11, 2013 8:34 PM

Howd that work out last year when he dog walked that fool all over the field?

  42. dobberdubinsky says: Sep 11, 2013 8:41 PM

Peterson is one of the most over-rated players in the league…..Megatron will torch him.

  43. justsomerandomguy24 says: Sep 11, 2013 8:49 PM

None of those top corners is head and shoulders above the rest, so someone could claim any one of Peterson, Revis, Haden, Sherman are the best, and it wouldn’t be anything to laugh at. Peterson may or may not be the best, but he is probably the most physically gifted.

  44. juniversal says: Sep 11, 2013 8:50 PM

I think Joe Haden is probably the best corner nobody talks about. And that’s coming from a Bengals fan.

  45. tjmac95 says: Sep 11, 2013 8:57 PM

Andre Johnson, Calvin Jonson, Larry Fitzgerald, AJ Green, and Julio Jones are the top 5 WRs in the game, and Revis, Tilman, Sherman, Peterson, and Cromartie are top 5 corners

  46. mikeyz6 says: Sep 11, 2013 9:03 PM

darrelle revis actually shut calvin johnson down… when the jets played the lions a couple years ago… calvin johnson 1 reception 13 yards..

  47. tjmac95 says: Sep 11, 2013 9:12 PM

And Kareem Jackson and Darrell Revis are the only 2 corners i have ever seen to completely shut down Calvin Johnson!!

  48. schaub2dreallday says: Sep 11, 2013 9:29 PM

And all you Tillman fans, he just learned to play CB at 33, lil late huh?

  49. boyshole25 says: Sep 11, 2013 9:31 PM

Peanut Tillman an joe Haden would like a word

  50. boyshole25 says: Sep 11, 2013 9:36 PM

Substitute Carlos Rogers for cromartie tjmac and your list in perfect
    IMO

  51. dmaq1 says: Sep 11, 2013 9:53 PM

Revis is still the man. Sherman is better than Peterson too

  52. tigerman3 says: Sep 11, 2013 10:15 PM

I’m a Lions fan and Love Calvin but the best CB in the NFL against him is The Ref Saying he Did Not Complete the process of the catch. Hey Calvin you wanna be a Supertsar? don’t let go of the the dang ball till after the refs signal TD.

  53. mydogsnameisvick says: Sep 11, 2013 10:16 PM

Charles Tillman is the best corner in football, hands down.
Creates the most turnovers, shuts down Megatron. Look it up.

  54. nyjetsfan08 says: Sep 11, 2013 10:28 PM

when ur coach game plans by putting ur cb on the opponent’s best wr and leaves him alone bc he knows one side of the field is covered and qbs dont throw to him, then u can make a case that it’s Peterson or whoever. There’s a reason y revis gets compared to deon sanders except revis is more physical and tackles. revis is the only shut down corner in the game. he creates a phantom pass rush bc the qb avoids throwing to him. when ur cb can do that, let me know.

Maybe the best receiver against the best punt returner. But definitely NOT the best corner.

  57. jayinem says: Sep 12, 2013 12:26 AM

I’m assuming Arians didn’t watch Hartline torch Petersen last year.

  58. gmsingh says: Sep 12, 2013 8:13 AM

Peterson clearly isn’t the best CB, but Arians is doing a good job towards the title of mouthiest coach in the league. Jim Harbaugh still has him beat, of course.

  59. djjackson81 says: Sep 12, 2013 6:38 PM

Of course Arians is gonna say Peterson is the best it his CB get over it. What bothers me is Arians saying Calvin is the best Wide Out that’s disrespectful to his own WO Fitz.
