Panthers bring back Fua, doubling their ’11 draft class

The Panthers spent their first two draft picks on defensive tackles this season, and the first time they had an opening, they brought back one of the guys who was displaced by the influx of talent.

The Panthers placed guard Garry Williams on injured reserve Wednesday, and filled his roster spot with defensive tackle Sione Fua.

The former third-rounder was part of the Panthers’ final cuts, and when he was released, he left quarterback Cam Newton as the only member of their 2011 draft class on the active roster.

Fua will go into what has become a deep rotation at the position, with veteran Dwan Edwards, rookies Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short and journeyman Colin Cole. The Panthers didn’t need to replace with another offensive lineman, since they were carrying 10 to begin with.

This is why teams remain in the cellar when they can’t evaluate and/or develop their talent. Having only one player remain in a very recent draft is just embarrassing.

I would have preferred Nate Clements or Brandon Lloyd.

For those who rip the Panthers for their ’11 draft class (myself included), keep in mind that this is why Marty Hurney, our old GM, was fired last year. With Gettlemen, this will change. So far, I think our ’13 draft class is solid. Give it time. You can’t immediately fix 10+ years of mistakes by a dumbass GM.

Why Marty Hurney is on his couch.

Actually it’s fairly common for all NFL teams to turnover players quickly and have few from a draft class two years ago. It’s the nature of the beast.
