Clay Matthews: I’m an awesome player, not a dirty player

Getty Images

Earlier this week, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh called Packers linebacker Clay Matthews’ late hit on quarterback Colin Kaepernick a “cheap shot” and that Matthews would have to work on repairing his image as a “tough guy” for slapping 49ers tackle Joe Staley during an ensuing scuffle.

Matthews met the media on Thursday and got the expected questions about his thoughts regarding Harbaugh’s comments. Matthews avoided most of them by saying he only wanted to answer questions about this week’s game against Washington, but eventually broke down and gave a little bit more.

“I’m an awesome player, I’m not a dirty player,” Matthews said.

Matthews cited his “pretty good” resume when it came to league discipline to back up his belief and wouldn’t say whether he’d been fined by the league office, which confirms all the fines of the week on Friday. It would be a surprise if Matthews’ name wasn’t on the list, the hit was a flagrant foul whether Matthews is a dirty player or not, which would mark the third time in his career that he’s received a fine.

Watching Matthews smirk while delivering his retort will probably ruffle some feathers in San Francisco, although the lack of another regular season game between the two teams probably means things will remain at a low simmer until they meet again. If that happens to be in this year’s playoffs, there should be plenty of fireworks from both sides.

  1. No Clay, you’re an idiot who should have been fined and suspended. You have to wonder why the League office chose not to. Imagine Brady or Manning on the other end of that attack.

They almost shut the league down after Brady got touched in a preseason scrimmage.

  2. Superiority complex refers to a subconscious neurotic mechanism of compensation developed by the individual as a result of feelings of inferiority. As in Cindy ” Clay” Brady would be a figure skater without steroids….

  3. “the hit was a flagrant foul whether Matthews is a dirty player or not, which would mark the third time in his career that he’s received a fine.”

One fine was for wearing yellow shoes. The other?

Grabbing Jay Cutler’s facemask — which I think we can all agree is something no one should be fined for.

  4. “Awesome” players don’t use an open hand slap in a scuffle that they started by cheapshotting the other teams QB 5 yards out of bounds. Pretty boy chump…

  5. Never seen Matthews be dirty till that play. Yes it was intentional. I like Kap but have lost respect for Harboy for all his pre-whining before games. Why is Singletary not getting any love for building the core for that team? Didnt think he was a good coach but he did get alot of the current pieces. I lived in Bay area 86-90 and being a Cowboy fan was rough there. Mainly cause all my cousins are niners fans.

  6. Clay is a class act like his play …im a 49er fan and was not happy with clay after the hit, but the guy appoligized to kapp …it oooooovvvveeeerrrr

  8. He is far closer to being awesome, than he is to being dirty.

That play was dirty, it merited a flag, but he was commited before he knew Kaepernick was going out.

    Play to the whistle.

  9. and anyone that watched the game on Sunday would agree….he is an awesome player!

this garbage is all media driven.

can anyone name the team that has won the most football games in the NFL over the past 20 years?

if you said the Green Bay Packers, would be correct!

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

#1 he did not use an open hand slap…watch the video you clown. this is made up by Hairball

#2 Matthews left his feet while Kaep was in bounds, made contact with him 3-4 feet out of bounds. you do realize 5 yards = 15 feet right??

#3 you are obviously jealous of his good looks, fame and fortune.

#4 you would wet your pants if you called him a chump even remotely close to his face

  18. He has a super bowl ring. something that the Vikings nd 4ers cant say.

im cool with his quote. He is pretty damn good.

  19. If you watched his interview, you would see he was saying it jokingly. Chill out people. Sorry he doesn’t want to stoop to the level of the cry babies out west.

  20. Clay Matthews is a good player, but is overrated on what has been a TERRIBLE Green Bay defense for a few years now.

And that quote won’t win you over any fans, Clay. Seriously. Just like Aaron Rodgers… people will like you more if you just keep your mouth shut.

  21. Those who get riled up by his comments, congrats. You gave him what he wanted. He loves to get into people’s heads – if even in an outlandish, sometimes laughable way.

Let’s put it this way, if you’re riled up by Clay – which clearly many of you here are – then you have no life, no sense of humor, and way too much time on your hands to sit around and do nothing but WORRY and WHINE!

  22. Clay was getting badgered with stupid questions and he made a joke to get a laugh…my god…he’s one of the good guys in the league…go after someone who deserves it…Like the players who take plays off, get suspended, etc.

    49ers record under Singletary: 18-22
    2010 49ers were 6-10 (5-10 under singletary)

    Since then Harbaugh/Baalke added:
    Aldon Smith
    Colin Kaepernick
    Chris Culliver
    Kendall Hunter
    Daniel Kilgore
    Bruce Miller
    LaMichael James

They’re regular season record since then is 24-7-1
They made it to the NFC championship both years and the Super Bowl once.

Singletary was a great motivator and probably the reason Vernon Davis is who he is, BUT he was NOT a good head coach.

  24. Correction:

” I have beautiful, Goldilocks hair, not a dirty player!”

In all seriousness, as a Bears fan, I have never once thought of Clay as a dirty player. He’s one of the best LB’s in the game right now! He should never been considered dirty, that’s SUH the dirty scum of Detroit.

Suh is the dirtiest player ever to play the game, end of story!

  25. This whole Matthews-HarBAWL thing has been blown WAY out of proportion. Mostly by HarBAWL, the media, and the 40 whiner fans.

It wasn’t a dirty hit. Period. The hit Clay delivered happens almost every week and it looked worse live than on the replay, which clearly showed that Clay left his feet before Cap was out of bounds. It also shows that he didn’t clothesline him. Clay was over-agressive – YES. Dirty – No.

If you have a problem with players getting hit, then maybe you shouldn’t watch tackle football.

    Can we please move on?

  26. So awesome players get knocked on their A’s for the entire fourth quarter now?
I wonder how many of Clay’s sacks came against a porous Chicago D-line?

  27. I’m a Packer fan who thought Harbaugh blew this whole thing out of proportion. However, it’s hard to blame the continuing drama on Harbaugh when Matthews is still talking about it himself. Matthews needs to follow his coaches advice and let the issue go. It’s over. Move on. We have a similar, although less talented, team coming to Lambeau in a few days.

  28. Remember people this is the entertainment industry and fans expect a show….and what would the 9er/Packer game been without some drama from the players…Harbaugh’s stick is overdone even for Saturday Night Live. Now they have some new material:)

Youtube “ronnie lot cheap shot” and you get a video of him laying out a defenseless Mark Bavaro. That hit would get you suspended in today’s NFL, and is at least as “dirty” as Clay’s hit.

Matthew’s hit probably wouldn’t even have been called 15 years ago.

  35. I haven’t seen his hit on Kaepernick, but as a Bears fan I respect his talent and do not consider him a dirty player (unlike a certain Mr. Suh in Detroit.) That being said, Matthews had the right idea in not wanting to address the issue.

  36. Clay still dont know that the 49ers won that game. he thinks they are still playing and the packers still have a chance.. WAKE UP CLAY! the game is over..49ers WIN. Stop trying to hurt people and I will stop saying you are a dirty player.

He is really talented, but if you are awesome, you shouldn’t have to tell people.

    ==================

He doesn’t, but he was asked to the point of being unavoidable. He has a right to a defense and he’s only speaking the truth.

  38. As a 49ers fan I will say he is an awesome player and as a USC fan I will also say I like Matthews. That play though was pretty dirty, it wasn’t he just hit him or tackled him out of bounds, he wrapped him up around his neck and shoulder area and slammed him on the ground.

Still in general I would agree with him that he isn’t a dirty player. He doesn’t have a track record like a certain DT on the Lions where his peers constantly say hes dirty and he gets fined all the time. He did warrant a fine for that hit though.

  39. I think its pretty dumb for someone to say it wasn’t a dirty hit because kaep was still in bounds because he was clearly “on his way” out of bounds and had given up but clay still LAUNCHED himself at kaep and clothslined him. I know its a mans game but thats how the NFL is nowadays, hell lavonte david gave Geno Smith a love tap but because he was “on his way” out of bounds and fell over, he got fined for it.

  40. Even though I’m a Niner fan, I agree with Matthews here. The hit on Kap was out of bounds and warranted the penalty, but I think he was clearly going all out to prevent a first down rather than going for an intentionally dirty hit. It’s not like he has a history of dirty play.

  41. Kinda funny…most of you obviously have no clue what a “clothesline tackle” is. First, you need to make contact with the neck of the opposing player and that never happened. Second…a clothesline takes place when you face an opposing player. I watched Ray Nitschke and Dick Butkus perform that move many times in the early 60’s. The move was outlawed because it posed a real danger to the player being tackled. Try opening your eyes and watch the video. Clay’s upper arm gets Kaep below the shoulder pad and his forearm slaps Kaep on the upper chest. Mathews never touched Kaep’s neck. Was it a late hit?..that’s a mute point. It was obviously out of bounds and should have been flagged. Everyone whines and cries about the “Flag Football League that the NFL is driving toward. Clay is not now and never was a “dirty player” Save that crap for James Harrison and Suh(zie) from Detroit. Clay is one of the cleanest and toughest linebackers in the league.

  43. Matthews is a clean player who made a dirty play. Reason it’s newsworthy is that he called his shot in the week leading up to it.

I don’t really see why the 9ers are upset though. They scored a TD on the drive and won the game. Their QB didn’t get hurt.

  44. I love it! It’s hysterical how riled up people get over a comment made in jet. Watch his full interview and you’ll clearly see he was trying to lighten the mood. After dealing with a week’s worth of criticism from the 40 whiners, I thought he handled this brilliantly, if not hilariously!

Seriously people, get a life already and quit hanging onto every word Harbrawl spews to the masses!

Just because someone on youtube labeled it cheap shot does not mean it was. Besides, you answered it yourself. His shot during that time was legal. What Matthews did on Sunday was not.

Look, why is it hard for packers fans to accept that he delivered a cheap shot. From what I have heard, he’s even apologized. It’s quite evident what he did, especially in light of what he said before the game.

  52. the nfl is losing its edge. manufactured controversies like this are proof.

but i’m so happy it exists. why? because it completely, and i mean COMPLETELY, destroys the viewership and broadcast of baseball. did you know they still play beyond september?

  53. What a joke. Of course he is a dirty player. He said he was going to take out Colin and his only chance was when Colin was 5 yards out of bounds. He is dirty, he is not awesome, he is, in reality pathetic, an embarrassment! He deserves a fine just like Suh. He told the NFL what he was going to do.

  54. What a schmuck. Clay should just keep his stupid comments to himself and let his talking happen on the field. All this will be is bulletin board material should the 2 teams meet in the playoffs.

  55. Your a one-dimensional football player that has an unbelievable ability to rush the quarterback. Unfortunately, you can’t do much else. Your job also entitles you to stop the run. When quarterbacks set rushing records on YOUR D-line, and RB’s get clear lanes up through your gap, you need to take responsibility. Your not awesome, your overrated bro. Can’t wait for HGH testing to start.

  56. “subconscious neurotic mechanism of compensation” ?. Everyone get a grip, Matthews quotes are called HUMOR.

Must be a San Fran fan get your face out of the pillow and watch the hit The way Flapperchick
Runs who knew he was going out ?Matthews was off his feet already.

  61. He deserves to be fined for not only launching himself when Kapernick was running out of bounds, but for throwing punches afterwards.

However, he won’t get fined because he too “beloved” by the NFL because of the PR….

    What a frikkin’ joke.

  62. Harbaugh has blown this whole thing way out of proportion. Matthews wanted to send a message and mess with Kap’s and Harbaugh’s minds. It’s obvious he has achieved that. Next it’s the Seahawks’ turn.

  63. i would much rather have casey matthews on my team.

who said that ? andy reid maybe. and casey made this yr’s eagles team as a 1 yr oregon alumnus courtesy provided by the chipovich.

  64. In the early 80’s this wouldn’t have even been a penalty.

The unwritten rule was that you needed to be outside the white before they’d throw a flag for a late hit out of bounds. This meant that if you didn’t want to get hit, you ran horizontal to get out of bounds. Today, it’s get as many yards as you can and then step out of bounds at the very last second.

I’ll also say that Clay needs to stop with the flopping when he thinks he is getting held. He’s worse than Lebron.

  65. Every player in the NFL that had illegal hits were fined. Suh, David, Goldson Hall… But Mathews is clearly above them so in the NFL’s view he must be an awesome player!! Lol Stupid NFL

FACT… I’ll give you Seattle from last year but that’s about it. 9ers are good right now but are going to be faced with huge issues in the future with contracts. 9ers need to win this year or its going to be too late.

  70. On the one hand, I agree that this is overblown. I don’t think he was trying to hurt Kaepernick, just a bit of poor judgment in hat of battle. On the other hand, I fully enjoy watching many of the same anonymous Sallies shift from attack mode on Suh to Packers Defense Force mode for Clay. The irony and hypocrisy is rich indeed.

  71. Whether it was a cheap shot or not it’s football if the 40 winers don’t want there football player to get hurt put him behind a glass case for display. Keep doing ur thing clay. And that’s playing football.

  72. There is no question that he “launched” at Kapernick, leaving his feet before making contact, which is a penalty nowadays regardless of whether he was in or out of bounds when the hit took place. I’m “old-school” and it just looked like hard nosed football to me, with no “intent” to injure, so I don’t see this meaning he’s a dirty player. But “awesome”??? Regardless of the validity of steriod accusations, more longevity is required to put me in awe, which is often problematic for juicers as injurys mount up over time. I’m guessing Uncle Bruce may remain the only Matthews in the Hall of Fame.

  73. i didn’t realize niner fans could whine this long! your team is about to play the hawks in 2 days, you should start to focus your attention on them. you got the win over the pack, mathews said it was a poor decision after the game. and fans wonder why goodell is ruining football, its cuz people whine for stuff like this!

  74. by the way some one brought up ronnie lott and butkus, try looking up deacon jones he used to close line everybody on and off the field! no fines or flags. its football get over it!

  75. Kapernick was clearly going out of bounds. Matthews intentionally went up high with his hit. If he went for his legs and wrapped him up, we wouldn’t be having this conversation today.

Suh gets fined $100k for being an idiot (yes, as Lions fan, there was no need for him to make that block and he could have ran along with the OT during the pick 6), but no fine for Matthews for making a high clothesline tackle on a quarterback going out of bounds. I’d love to hear Goddell’s definition of consistency…

Beyond that, probably top 3 or 4 in the NFL.

    ——————————————————–

You HAVE to be kidding me….. This has to be a joke.

  77. There must be a lot whining 49ers fans on here making up accusations about Matthews PED use – since there’s never even been any serious assertion of this. It is just spurned lovers who would give their left nuts to have this future hall-of-famer on their own teams. Clay actually IS and awesome player, and you know it. Deal with it.

  78. I know people move on. If you saw the interview, you would know he was joking. He got penalized for the hit and we know he is not a dirty player. Next game up, time to move on.

Lets move on to most annoying coach bowl Sunday night. The battle for ego’s…..

  79. And the leader of the Forty Whiners has spoken. This coming from the guy who wouldn’t even shake his own brother’s hand after the SB last year.

Harborough is an asshat – that will never change.

As for Clay – I betcha’ when we see the Whiners in the playoffs ol’ Kaperneck won’t try a QB sneak or run to Mattews side.

    “I hear footsteps…”

  80. I wonder if Harbough thinks about deacon jones.

One of his moves was an open handed head slap that would stun the opposing player.

BTW.. Ever put on a helmet and get a head slap in the ear hole? It’s alot more head jarring than a fist.

  81. Had this been done by James Harrison, Ritchie Incognito, or Ndamukong Suh, the uproar would be deafening, and the league would be suspending someone. But since it’s golden boy Matthews, it’s supposed to be OK?

  82. The SISSY couldn’t get it done between the lines so he had to take a cheap shot. Totally classless and cowardice. That’s what they teach you at USC. I can’t wait for someone to take this moron out for good! I also wish they would have let Staley rough him up…..THAT would have been fun to watch.

  83. I don’t know, I think it is pretty tough for Clay to bitchslap a guy that probably outweighs him by 70-80 pounds!

As far as what Harbaugh, the former Chicago Bear, thinks………WHO CARES? LOL

  84. As a Packers owner I speak for all of Packer Nation when I say – who cares if he juices as long as he’s productive?

  85. seeing viking fans all in a uproar (over a 49er QB taking a hit) … smh, wasn’t Jared Allen intentionally going after Matt Schuab’s legs … I remember two shots at the guy’s knees in that game from 08 or 09…

One desperation leap to prevent Kaep from getting a first down – “HE’s DIRTy! Suspend him! This is reprehensible!”
