Mark Sanchez: “I won the competition” with Geno Smith

AP

Mark Sanchez is not the Jets’ starting quarterback, but he believes he proved in training camp and the preseason that he is the Jets’ best quarterback when healthy.

Sanchez told Rich Eisen of NFL Network that suffering a shoulder injury in the preseason is particularly tough for him because he is sure he — not Geno Smith — would have been named the starting quarterback if he were healthy.

I won the competition. There’s no doubt,” Sanchez said.

Despite reports that Sanchez will likely need season-ending shoulder surgery, Sanchez told Eisen that doctors are “pleasantly surprised” by his progress, and the plan is for Sanchez to rehab his injury and get back on the field this year.

If Smith plays well, however, Sanchez may not get back on the field no matter how well rehab of his shoulder goes. Even if Sanchez won the competition over the summer, that doesn’t mean the job will be his when he’s healthy enough to play.

  1. Won the competition, and lost the war. Deal with it Sanchez, you are all done as a starting QB in the league.

  2. Does anyone have the telephone number for Gillette Stadium?

The entire New York Jets team has been ringing Gillette Stadium door bell but no one is opening the door. Seems that nobody is home!!

You think that the Patriots slipped out of town??

  3. I won Pinellas County (FL) soccer player of the month in 4th grade — but then we moved and I never played soccer again. Thank God.

Sanchez, you should look at it the same way and move one from football and take up your first love of designing different colored headbands. It’s a noble cause and something you probably do better than play an NFL QB.

  4. Congratulations Sanchise – in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

We could also insert a “World’s Tallest Midget” joke in here too.

  5. Did his coach put Sanchez on the field as QB with 2nd and 3rd string offensive linemen to defend him? Did his coach ruin Sanchez’ chance to play this season and maybe again as Jets QB?

If the coach did it to Sanchez, won’t he do the same thing eventually to Smith?

  6. Yeah, I dont feel bad for the guy if his starter career is over. Best. Job. Ever. Massive salary (compared to most of us), less work then everyone else on the team AND great job security (back up QB’s with his kind of experience are always in high demand)!

  7. Sanchez, stop talking. Golden opportunity to distance yourself from that clownshoe organization on your own terms.

  8. So Sanchise beat put Smith, Lienfart, and Braddus Quinn.
In other words he beat out the almost dying, dying, and the dead.
    Quite an accomplishment.

  9. Yup, coaches always put the guy who wins the QB competition in at the end of the 4th quarter in a pre-season game. Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers – they all play at the end of the 4th quarter in the pre-season.

  10. Not a very classy remark by Sanchez….. Sour grapes!

I never wish a player injury, but if that’s what it took to stamp out all final remnants of the Sanchez era for the New York Jets I can only be thankful that providence has finally entered the fray & is moving us forward at the position!!

  11. How, pray tell, do you rehab a torn labrum? Constant stress from the throwing motion, and even if the gap is reduced, almost no blood supply for the cartilage. Maybe the approach is to build up the muscles to make up for the loose fit and hold the humerus in place, but doesn’t heavy new musculature risk the throwing motion, accuracy, etc.?

Drew Brees had surgery to stitch the labrum back in place and took >6 months to rehab it.

  12. I’ve never played football at any level in my life. I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. So, make me the Jets starter!

  13. @jetsjetsjetsnow – “I can only be thankful that providence has finally entered the fray & is moving us forward at the position!!”

If Geno starting is “moving us forward,” I’d really hate to see what a “step backwards” would be.

  14. When your Head Coach sends you out in the 4th quarter of a pre-season game playing with practice squad prone players and you get hurt … you really think thats starter situations?

  15. I realize he was answering a question, but why start talking like this now? Seems like a distraction for the team.

  16. See Mr Sanchez, the problem with that announcement is if you look at the the totality of the situation, there never should have Ben a COMPETITION……You my friend, had a 4 year head start, a time when any decent QB should have cemented himself and assured the franchise that at that QB position, they had no worries for a long time…….The fact that you had to COMPETE with a rookie, albeit I think, a good one,to give the GM and Head coach a warm and fuzzy about you and that boat load of money they gave proved that you had already lost the competition……

But if it helps you to sleep at night and provides a semblance of comfort, then OK, come on everybody……….1,2, 3,…..Mark won the competition……

  17. Remind him that Tyrod Taylor was to start the season for the Ravens 6 years ago – until he got sick.

    Adios Sanchez

  18. He’s right. He DID win the competition.

And the Jets are (a lucky) 1-0 instead of 0-1.

Which is why the problem isn’t so much the players as the decision makers in that organization.

  19. I’m very sorry for this fall from Grace, I hate to see him go, hope he has a jar of Vaseline ready, of course I’m a Dolphin fan, sure that Buffalo feels the same, perhaps even the Pats. Bill

  20. didn’t snachez get a go around with that model with the big chest. what’s her name. yeah he won at life.

  21. Sanchez is an immature punk who will be remembered for the Butt Fumble and cross dressing as the highlights of his time with the NYJ

  22. lets not all forget Rex Ryan is still coaching thus the possibility of Sanchez returning this year still exists. humorous as that is. I wonder if Rex will work a deal to bring mark as a camp arm at his DC job somewhere next season.

  23. Mark, you never understood as soon as they signed Geno it was over for you. In your mind you think you won the competition, but in reality you never had a chance to. The Jets were going to make a change one way or the other, they had seen enough of you, way too many mistakes. I’m sure some team will give him a chance as a back up, but his starting days are over in the NFL.

  24. The Jets don’t want you to win Mark, because it means they lost. They probably put a bounty on your shoulder so they could make sure Geno would start.

  25. What a class act his stupid head band must be cutting the circulation off to his delusional mind because they had him and his girlish figure out there in the 4th quarter of a preseason game

  26. It hardly matters if its true or not true. Bottom line is that the Jets will cut him next off season and he can join Tebow and all the other unemployed QB’s looking for their next job.

If he does get signed, it will be for minimum dollars and a back up role, at best. The Jets are a joke and his contract is Exhibit A.

  27. And I once had two rich kids plagiarise my work in College and get caught they still got work and then this epic wanker Nathan Fielding stole my charity concept and turned it into a comedy show online so he could line his pockets. Life sucks, by a league regulation helmet.

  28. Mark’s a legend in his own mind. The Jets are fortunate to be able to have Geno. The organization remains a joke, Rex telling the fans it’s day to day for Mark. I don’t understand the Rex’s infatuation with Mark.

  29. Every other team in the league is disappointed too Mark.

That they’ll have to face someone potentially better than your awful performances.

Dude you’re getting over 8 million this year, which after taxes and agent’s fees leaves you about 4 million for doing nothing much and having all your medical expenses paid for as well.

In case you can’t do the math, that’s 80 times what a person making 50k a year will make before taxes this year. For sitting on your rear end most of the year.

Get over it, retire and go enjoy your money. You can blow a million doing whatever you want and still have enough left to live in total luxury the rest of your life.

  30. Sanchez sounds like a little kid in grade school. But, But, I’m in the second grade and your in the first” Sorry dude, but the jets and their fans are wasting there time with you.

  31. How are all the ex-NFL/USC quarterbacks gonna fit in one hot tub? Man what a party that will be. And they can invite Anthony Weiner, too! Bring your phone!

  32. Does anyone happen to know the # to the Waaaaaanimal Control? This dude acts like he’s 5 years old and plays like he is 10! If they ever put Sanchez back in at QB for the Jets it will prove that management is completely clueless! I really hope this dud is done being a starting QB in the NFL! The way he pays he deserves to ride the bench! I think he would make a great backup!

  33. I know most like the hate on Sanchez, and sometime he gives good reason, but I don’t think he has gotten a really fair deal in NY. He has had different and coordinatoors, and that can’t be easy to deal with every year. The head coach doesn’t believe in offensive football, so little help there either. I think Mark will go to another team, and get a fair shot to prove how much of the problems was him, and how much was the scrub offense around him. He is no worse than some of the guys starting around the league now. Sanchez has been very professional in his handling of everything Jets related as well. Imagine a weak mind like Vince Young, he would have gone crazy and had a public outburst if he were in the same shoes.
Can still hate Mark all you want, but fact is , he deserves a second chance with a fresh team.

  34. Great comments everyone. You guys make NBC sports talk fun.

Now Sanchez, congratulations on beating out the rookie.

Your league low QBR will stay intact for another year on your resume.

    LMAO!!! Pure gold right here!

  36. Sure, Mark. All teams put their starting qbs out in the fourth qtr in a meaningless preseason game! Just keep telling yourself that.

  37. LOL, a veteran QB talking about how he beat out a rookie for the starting job. And he actually didn’t win that competition, Smith lost it by not playing well in preseason. Luckily for the Jets Sanchez got hurt so now in typical Jets fashion they’ve stumbled and bumbled into doing what they should have known to do all along, i.e. start Smith.

  38. Bet the jets wish they had kept Te-Bow now. And after tonights game between the Pats and the Jets…with both QB’s throwing tons of incompletions, (both under 50% comp.) and the Jet’s QB throwing three interceptions….I’ll just bet they BOTH wish they had kept ol Te-Bow. But Te-Bow being the good Christian that he is, would most likely take on the QB top spot on the Jets….if they could only humble themselves enough to call him. Chin up Te-Bow…..

  39. Although Mark might have a more accurate arm than Geno, (not saying much) Geno can scramble better. But the best J-e-t-s JETS JETS JETS QB during preseason was young Simms. That’s who should be starting.

  40. Too bad for Sanchez. He may have played better but Smith has more upside (in the Jets’ eyes at least) and then he got hurt in garbage time of a pre-season game.
