Danny Amendola’s groin injury may be more significant than previously thought.

Amendola, the receiver who injured his groin in his debut with the Patriots on Sunday against the Bills, will miss tonight’s game against the Jets. And according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Amendola is expected to end up missing anywhere from two to six weeks with the injury.

If Amendola’s absence does end up stretching into the six-week range, that would be a major blow to the Patriots, who were hoping when they signed Amendola that he would be their leading receiver, as Wes Welker was last year. Amendola is a talented receiver, but the knock on him has always been that he can’t stay healthy, and the fact that he suffered a significant injury in his first game as a Patriot will lead to plenty of talk that New England should have steered clear of Amendola, given his injury history.

Amendola did look good in New England’s offense in the opener, catching 10 passes for 104 yards. But it doesn’t matter how good Amendola looks on the field if he ends up spending most of his time on the sideline.
