Report: Mark Sanchez has labral tear, surgery likely

Mark Sanchez AP

After a dismal performance from Geno Smith in the New York Jets’ third preseason game against the New York Giants, it seemed as though Mark Sanchez was destined to win the Jets starting quarterback job. That was right up until Sanchez injured his shoulder in garbage time in the fourth quarter playing behind a reserve offensive line.

Smith won the job and Sanchez has been out ever since. Now Sanchez may be facing surgery to repair his injured shoulder.

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com, Dr. James Andrews has diagnosed a labral tear in Sanchez’s throwing shoulder that will likely require surgery. Sanchez is apparently still mulling the decision over of whether to have surgery or attempt to rehab the shoulder. Surgery will likely end Sanchez’s season.

Even if he elects to rehab the shoulder, surgery could still become a necessity. Sanchez told Mortensen via text that “If I needed surgery right now, I never would have left Andrews’ office. I would’ve stayed and got the surgery.”

However, it certainly appears to be setting up as a completely lost season for Sanchez. Even if he can play through the injury, the Jets are now committed to Smith as their starter.

Addition by subtraction? But then again, I don’t think Geno is good

All part of their plan, management couldn’t be happier with that outcome I’m sure. Now Rex can use a rookie qb as a scapegoat for the failed season.

He’s actually having robot transformation surgery in hopes of being a successful NFL QB. Doctors are saying there is a .9% chance it works.

Watch Sanchez get the surgery, get cut, come back stronger than before and burn the Jets next season…

Poor guy. What way to end such a crazy 4 years with the jets. They absolutely did him no favors. In fact, they completely screwed him.

I had high hopes for this kid. Good luck, Mark. It wasn’t meant to be here with the jets.

  12. jetsflyinghigh says: Sep 12, 2013 12:45 AM

i know a lot of people bash on sanchez, and rightfully so. however, what a sad way for the sanchez era to end. he’s always seemed like a nice, genuine dude and as a jets fan in their mid 20’s, he’s brought me the best memories of this team. i’ll never forget those playoff runs and wish him the best in his recovery and hope he can come back strong.

  13. brenenostler says: Sep 12, 2013 12:46 AM

Man I feel for him. He would have won the competition. But whether he has the surgery or not, Sanchez’s career in NY is over.

  20. drelms says: Sep 12, 2013 12:59 AM

Too bad for all of you Jets fans I guess you may realize now that you are not going to get anywhere with the Coach you currently have.

Ryan put your quarterback at risk by putting him in a meaningless game and with a 2nd string line no less. He should be freakin ashamed of himself.

Instead of threatening to coach the NE Patriots coach in the face maybe he should do himself, literally.

  21. drelms says: Sep 12, 2013 1:00 AM

  25. nfl4days says: Sep 12, 2013 1:03 AM

Jokes aside, you never wanna see a guy get injured, and the way it happened leaves a bad taste in my mouth. What was Rex hoping to accomplish by sending him out there in the 4th Qt? Complete disrespect on top of getting him injured.

  26. scottydo16 says: Sep 12, 2013 1:04 AM

  27. hidden202 says: Sep 12, 2013 1:04 AM

I know a bunch of butt jokes are coming but on a serious note

I hope Sanchez has a successful surgery and finds a backup job somewhere in the NFL after his rehab. His chapter in the Jets book has officially close since he’s going to get cut after this season.

    Good Luck Mark.

  28. chingonrungame says: Sep 12, 2013 1:22 AM

Surgery= free agent next year. Jets days will be over.

  29. jetfanatic says: Sep 12, 2013 1:22 AM

It was looking to be a completely lost season for Sanchez before the injury.

  30. curtispaintersbackup says: Sep 12, 2013 1:27 AM

The Jets should release him at the end of the year. Let him go and compete for a job elsewhere. He would make for a top 5 back up in the league if nothing else.

  31. packerswin96 says: Sep 12, 2013 1:40 AM

    Way to go Rex!

  32. enzo1030 says: Sep 12, 2013 1:48 AM

Only prolonging the inevitable surgery. He should just get it done now and be ready to compete somewhere next season.

Hate to see Sanchez’ Jets tenure end this way. Guy can step it up in the playoffs, but just couldn’t be consistent enough in the regular season.

Hope to see him do well somewhere else.

  33. arrogantnation says: Sep 12, 2013 1:55 AM

Hope he has a full recovery!

  34. filmex2000 says: Sep 12, 2013 2:01 AM

Rex’s massive ego buried Tim Tebow on the bench last season, even when the team was circling the drain, because Rex could stand more losses but he couldn’t bear the thought of being second guessed should Tebow actually produce victories.

Now he finishes off Sanchez for the year by having him mop-up in the fourth quarter behind backups only to get squished.

Rex the QB career killer. It’s going to be fun watching his head explode when Geno invariably goes down with an injury. Who is next up so Rex can play pull the wings off the fly ?

  35. klecko says: Sep 12, 2013 2:13 AM

Please tell me he’ll never take the field as a Jet again… Pretty please…

  36. sharkt says: Sep 12, 2013 2:32 AM

  37. drohanimal says: Sep 12, 2013 2:33 AM

  40. cpo187 says: Sep 12, 2013 2:47 AM

Looks like Sanchez and Tebow will both be playing for the same team again soon.

  41. blancodiablo says: Sep 12, 2013 3:56 AM

    Which means goodnight Rex

  42. zeke2517 says: Sep 12, 2013 4:22 AM

Say what you will about Sanchez, but this is a pretty raw deal.

But on a different note I’m not sure I’d find myself texting these animals if given the choice.

  43. osovol says: Sep 12, 2013 4:26 AM

I wish injury on any player (even Mark Sanchez,) but the silver lining on this one is that Geno Smith can get guaranteed starts to show what he can do. NYJ fans (much like my fellow Browns fans) seem like the type that would quickly call for the hook if Smith was to falter in a couple games. At least this way we can all actually see what Geno Smith is capable of, because I don’t see anyone calling for McElroy if he has a bad game tomorrow.

  44. vegaskid21 says: Sep 12, 2013 4:56 AM

Ironic how it worked out this way, instead of Sanchez making 8 million a year, on the bench.

  45. bringbackkosar says: Sep 12, 2013 5:00 AM

Well that’s one way to solve the QB dilemma. Way to go Rex, brilliant coaching move there in preseason. J-E-T-S

    LOL

  49. bostonstandup says: Sep 12, 2013 6:00 AM

Sanchez having season ending surgery could be a blessing in disguise for the Jets. Now if they could do the same for the rest to the rest of the team and get an entire new look they might actually have a chance of winning a few games. Oh right, then there’s that coach of theirs…

  50. thetruthcampaign says: Sep 12, 2013 6:07 AM

Funny how Geno Smith wins a game, and now Sanchez needs surgery. They never actually have to say “We choose Geno or that other guy” now.

  51. ebr362 says: Sep 12, 2013 6:15 AM

  52. clowntown1 says: Sep 12, 2013 6:15 AM

The crazy thing is a torn muscle in his shoulder doesn’t make him any worse of a qb than he already was….he is that bad. Buttfumble.

  53. jimthebuilder27 says: Sep 12, 2013 6:19 AM

Oh well. He’s still getting 8 million to sit and heal. He and his agent should send a thank you card to former GM Mike Tannenbaum for giving him that stupid contract!

  54. jacksonjames4 says: Sep 12, 2013 6:24 AM

Yeah suuuuure. I have a feeling that if Geno had a real bad game the headline would be a little different

  55. lemmetalkwouldya says: Sep 12, 2013 6:41 AM

A “lost season” for Mark Sanchez is when he actually has to play in a game.

  56. souldogdave says: Sep 12, 2013 6:45 AM

    Convenient, eh?

  57. hansenbrothers says: Sep 12, 2013 6:46 AM

Conspiracy theory: the jets trotted Sanchez out there in the hopes of getting him hurt, so they could start geno with no questions asked.

  58. vmkstar99 says: Sep 12, 2013 6:46 AM

And nothing of value was lost.

  59. zipnyc says: Sep 12, 2013 6:47 AM

Sanchez wasn’t winning the QB competition at all. Neither QB was. That game was Geno’s turn to start, which is why Sanchez was still in the game as the backup. This isn’t rocket science. Of course, that won’t stop the idiotic circus comments or the Rex bashing. Nor will Coughlin get bashed even though he elected to kick a field goal and send the game to overtime at the end.

  60. dpdonny says: Sep 12, 2013 6:48 AM

The decision to put Mark in that game at the point resulting in a season ending injury will close forever the door to HC opps for Rex.

  61. paulbdotcom says: Sep 12, 2013 6:54 AM

Your 2013 NY Jets ladies and gentlemen!

  75. brownsclown says: Sep 12, 2013 8:03 AM

The good news is that the JETS have Braddua Quinn, a QB who can throw the ball from the Meadowlands to Times Square. The bad new is with Quinn’s accuracy the ball would land somewhere in Rhode Island. But JETS fans, never fear–Rex can coach Quinn up and get a least one win!

  76. gmsingh says: Sep 12, 2013 8:05 AM

Rex Ryan *really* needs to be fired at this point.

  77. sbmcintosh36 says: Sep 12, 2013 8:05 AM

Never like to see players injured, but this could be a good turn of events for the Jets.

    1. They’ll now get a full season to evaluate Geno without all the media controversy surrounding Sanchez.

    2. Insurance may cover some of Sanchez’ salary should he decide to have surgery.

    3. After cutting Sanchez and Holmes next off season, the Jets will have a pile of money, and draft picks to keep building the team.

Still cant see how Rex is the head coach. Gets his starting QB crushed in garbage time of pre season and is now expected to win with a rookie. Maybe that was his plan all along, to get another year and blame it on his QB situation.

  89. all4patriots says: Sep 12, 2013 9:38 AM
