Range for Amendola’s return “impossible” to predict

Amendola AP

In his first game as a Patriots, the oft-injured Danny Amendola was injured again.  Though he admirably played through the groin strain suffered in Buffalo, he missed Thursday night’s game against the Jets.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network has reported that Amendola will be out at least two but as many as six weeks.  However, a source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that it’s too early to peg the limits of a potential return.

Per the source, it’s “impossible” to predict Amendola’s absence at this point, only five days removed from the injury.

Earlier this week, the Patriots used their short-term IR designation on running back Shane Vereen, which means that they’ll have to carry Amendola on the roster until he returns.  Whether that’s two, three, four, five, six, or more weeks remains to be seen.

And so we’ll have to watch this one week by week, waiting for him to return to practice, to be listed as questionable on the injury report (possibly for multiple weeks), and then to actually suit up and play.

This is what arrogance does when you start losing a step. Bill still thinks he has what it takes as a personnel man as his house of cards comes tumbling down. If he was not so arrogant, Welker would still be there and they could still move the ball no matter who was playing Tight End

Yet Skip Bayless says Amendola clear upgrade over Welker. He has them winning it all. Brady is yelling and screaming at his WR last night. Can you imagine if that would’ve been Aaron Rodgers? The whole show would be about what a terrible leader he is.

I still cant believe he returned and finished that game. Say what you want about him being injury prone (which I agree) that had to be painful to continue playing.

Whatever they gave him I need some for my Thu Night softball league.

As the experts have been saying for years, Brady is a system QB, not an elite QB. Put him on average teams and you get the result like last night…48% completion percentage.
Further proof when Cassel took over a few years ago and the system made him look good. Went to average KC team, and you see the results.
    Manning, Young, Unitas, Marino…real winners.

I don’t care what anyone says… Brady has no one to throw too. I would go as far to say, he barely has NFL level talent running routes for him. I’ve been a fan of BBs, but he really screwed up here, that was obvious and embarrassing. I’m not a pats fan, but I enjoy football and last nights game was really hard to watch. How can u not give a qb like Brady something better than that?

I love some of the idiots on this site. Brees threw 5 picks in an ugly loss last season and Peyton Manning threw 6 interceptions in a loss in 2007. Rodgers played terrible in the playoff loss to the Giants 2 years ago and if you have never seen Eli have a terrible game then you must not watch football very often. So yes, other great qb’s throw up stinkers once in awhile. The difference is that Tom Brady WON this game and didn’t give the game away like the other “elite” qb’s who never have a bad game. Another moron looking for attention with no facts to back up his point….welcome to proffotballtalk.

  21. tigerlilac says: Sep 13, 2013 1:42 PM

All of you are right. Brady’s behavior was not admirable. Of course, he is not acclimated to not playing well. He’s made it to the playoffs every year he has been a starting NFL quarterback. He is so bad this year his team is only 2 – 0 and 2 – 0 in their division. Last night he was intercepted at least zero times. He is so overrated just because he wins. And his supermodel wife is not really good-looking, they just pay her tens of millions of dollars a year to airbrush her photos.

  22. tedmurph says: Sep 13, 2013 1:43 PM

A combination of JMontana and DMarino couldn’t have looked good with what Brady had to work with last night. Even with that, if some of the long passes Brady dropped right in WRs hands had been caught, he would have had another 150 yds and a couple of TDs. The legend, winner and greatest QB of all time is still 2-0. Must kill the haters. It’ll be even more fun when Gronk, Amendola and Vereen get back, along with the improvement of the obviously talented rookie corps. They were wide open all night, against a good D. Rex even benched his 1rst rnd CB because he was getting schooled.

Sometimes I hate the ignorance of some football fans. For those who are saying Tom Brady is not elite you really need to re-think your reasoning. Every QB is going to have a bad game every now and then. As an Eagles fan I can still respect that Tom Brady is elite. Its debatable, but probably the best QB or one of the top 2 of the 2000′s.

  26. ampats says: Sep 13, 2013 1:54 PM

    2-0

Gronk, Amendola and Vereen will all be back mid season the latest. Rookies take time to develop. The defense played well and has given up 3TD’s in 2 games with 6 takeaways.

Before the sky falls, lets see how they look in another month or so.

    And they are 2-0

  33. bigbamboom1 says: Sep 13, 2013 2:04 PM

If the Patriots return to the SuperBowl and win it, It won’t be because of Amendola. He is a small ingredient that will become more important at the end of the year (playoffs) IMO. I think his injury is a blessing in disguise to the Patriots. It will force Tom Brady to be patient and fully develop the talented young combo Dobson/Thompkins/Boyce like he did with Gronkowski/Hernandez after the Moss/Welker era.

Gronk’s return over the next 2 games is much more important than the return of Amendola. His return will open up the outside for Dobson/Boyce/Thompkins to thrive. and underneath for Edelman/Vereen/Amendola to work their sauce.

But the early offensive struggles is masking the real Patriot story. Along with the most important free agent signing over the past 5 years. I’m talking about Aquib Talib. He is a game changer! He controls a whole half of the field. And his presence allows the D-Line to go beast mode and Linebackers to patrol the middle lanes more freely. Talib is the Patriot story over the first 2 games. And we need to recognize him for it. He was an inspired risk for Kraft/Belichick to take. And it is really paying off early.

Amendola is not the story right now. It is Talib and the Patriots young defense. They won the first 2 games.

But even I came around years ago to the reality that Brady is Top 10 All-Time at the position. Team alliances and rivalries are what make sports great – but when you cant admit that an opposing player is incredible (without liking him) then you are just being ridiculous.

i don’t see how anyone can blame BB for his “arrogance” and TB for being an “average system QB”.

this is clearly the result of missing players .. they had expected to have amendola, gronk, and hernandez to throw to with vareen and ridley running.

with that roster there should be no problems .. but due to injuries and murder the players remaining on the field don’t measure up .. it happens.

so this is no one’s “fault” .. its just luck. luck is a part of every game and every season .. sometimes you have good luck and sometimes you have bad luck.

It’s simple. They went 11-5 with a guy who hasn’t started since high school and finished tied for the best record in that division. And Cassel even won more games than Brady did the year after that.

What further proof is there that Brady is only good because of the system?

All intelligent football fans know Curtis Painter could win at least 10 games in that system. And put Peyton Manning on the Patriots 11 years ago and he would have at least 6 rings by now for sure, and maybe more. And there would be no need for Spygate.

Put Brady on the Colts teams in the 2000′s and they wouldn’t make the playoffs once.

You realize these numbers he’s putting up are against the Bills and the Jets right? starting 2 rookie QB’s?

These are numbers that got Tebow tossed outta the league. You think this is a 2 game fluke? You can’t run it, you cant pass it, your Def sucks, even your FG kicker shanked a gimmie last game. The only player that did anything the entire game was getting screamed at by your cry baby quarterback the entire game…good plan Tom…great leadership buddy….what a marroon

    Some NFL math:

    Tom Brady
    - Spygate
    ————
    Trent Dilfer

Should have kept Drew Bledsoe. At least with Bledsoe they legitimately won an AFC championship without Spygate, and their team was respected and liked by us football fans.

As a Rams fan, I’m a fan of Danny’s and rooting for him to do well up there, however anyone (BB included) expecting more than an injury prone, yet solid contributor at WR, when he can play, was fooling themselves.

Since you guys got burned for spygate I’m pretty sure manning has been to 2 SB’s and won 1….what did you guys do …oh ya the 18-1 choke job…..voted the best SB of all time btw….so lets not talk about chokeing ok?….here’s alittle comparison.

    Comp%64.3, Yds 462 TD 7, INT 0, Rating 141.1
After 1 game against SB Champ Ravens.

    Comp% 52.7, Yds 473, TD 3, INT 1, Rating 74.1
After 2 games against two teams starting rookie QB’s……like really…you wanna compare them….really?…Brady isn’t even close to his level……did I mention how much I’m looking forward to him throwing to welker this weekend?

  70. tedmurph says: Sep 13, 2013 4:46 PM

Despite having comparable reg season records, Brady is 17-7 in the playoffs with 3 rings, while PManning is 9-11 with 1 ring. C-H-O-K-E. Peyton’s brother has twice the sack.

Spygate is nothing but the whiney excuse for fans of teams that have been trampled by the Pats, just like Raider fans with the ‘Tuck Rule’. Get on with your lives, 3 rings are in the books, they ain’t coming down.

Edelman’s stats for week one were better than Welker’s, and Amendola’s were better.

Can’t wait to watch the Pats blow out Denver again this yr, for the 4th straight time.

  71. mightysimi says: Sep 13, 2013 4:51 PM

You guys keep going back to 3 rings but always ignore spygate. If it wasn’t an issue why 0-2 since? Because you got caught and couldn’t do it again that’s why.

And any schmoe could do what he did see Cassell, Matt.

hahahahahaa no I help you out. Spygate was a system of cheating that was brought to light by the ex-pats coach eric manginni. A system of illegal filming of Def signals, micing defencive lineman to steal offensive line audibles on the line during presseason practices with other teams, filming superbowl team walk throughs, Secondary QB helmet frequencies to the QB to keep communications upo until the snap, tapping of opponents coaches booth’s as well as dressing rooms @ home, and jamming frequencies of opponents QB communication…..but that was all…..no big deal right? It has and still goes on……This coaching staff has been fined for it…..includeing your loser OC McDoink who got caught for trying to do it in denver when he got there….the reason your team sucks is beacuse people know what’s going on and do the best to prevent the advantage as much as possible.

But it’s just an excuse we use….lol…..did you think people would just forget that all your championships are tainted and have an * besides them? just cause TB is going to the HOF doesn’t mean the rest of NFL fans have to think he deserves it.

  78. forsbergler says: Sep 13, 2013 5:36 PM

just face it…your QB sucks, your team sucks, BB scheme’s are 10 yrs out of date and don’t work anymore. This 5 yrd passing offence is the most boring offence to watch…even when it was puting up 30 points a game…..once pats fans realize the only reason there team had some success these past few years was the dual TE threat…they could run and hit big gains on PA….now…no1 is open…and brady is scared and has happy feet against the pass rush….I feel bad for him alittle bit… but then I think about it for half a second and come to my senses and hope he gets crushed by a LB and seperates a shoulder….Can we get a pats fan in here who atleast understands what made them decent the last few years please?……….It definatly wasn’t brady that’s for sure.

  79. kissbillsrings says: Sep 13, 2013 5:37 PM

Spygate…. The patriots have had consistently better record since then & made it to 2 superbowls losing both by a combined total of 7 points I believe maybe less….many franchises havent even been to a Super Bowl let alone win or lose one & this is in a salry cap era not like the old days when teams that won were bought or so roided up other teams couldn’t compete…
Brady is & will be a first ballot HOF qb without exception. Again that is reality….by mid season when football really matters the chemistry will be there and his stats will soar as he wins when it really matters…

Wow, there’s some knowledge right there. You must teach rhetoric…somewhere.

Spygate book. This guys source. Self published with author’s own money, because he couldn’t get a legitimate house to publish it. Had never written a book before, not a journalist, but had nothing better to do, since he lost his license in the financial industry. Cites no evidence or sources, other than a Vegas bookie and a fringe stat guy. Offers no proof of his ‘theories’. The premise of the book is statistically, the Pats are so good at home, they must still be cheating. We don’t know exactly what EAdams does, so it must be him. They go on to make the rest up, and even the author admits it’s just a theory.

Oh, I forgot, the author is a disgruntled fan of a rival team, either Jets or Steelers, I think.

If anyone likes those kind of books, there are a couple of other ones about the US Gov’t being behind 9/11 and Obama being born in Kenya. Check em out, they’re about as legit.

  82. darrenmnichols says: Sep 13, 2013 5:54 PM

omg, spygate people, enough. The patriots used video cameras to tape other teams walkthroughs, events that were open to anyone to see. A team could literally have two people there, with binoculars, one writing down the coaching signals. one writing down the play. This is allowed, and done. Yes, the Patriots broke the rules by video recording this instead. they were trying to cut corners, yes. But this wasn’t some sort of vast, high tech spying operation. These were events that were open for anyone to see!!! No team were actually showing off their secret plays and signals, so enough, enough, enough.

  83. kissbillsrings says: Sep 13, 2013 5:54 PM

Patriots under Tom Brady 2013…2-0…2-0 in division… Yeah I think he’s way over rated I mean why isn’t he 5-0 already this year after just 2 games? What a lousy qb!!!

BB’s out of touch? First team in the NFL to use CKelly’s fast paced offense, that everyone’s trying to copy, after going out to Oregon and consulting with him. First team to use the dual TE threat that everyone’s trying to copy. I could go on, but I don’t want to insult such a ‘knowledgable’ fan . If BB is such a dinosaur, and Brady has no talent, how did the Pats go to the SB and the AFC Championship gm the last 2 yrs? Must have been the D, right Mr. Football?

Easy, getting a good record because your devision sucks, 2 awesome TE ‘s, a lucky drop against the ravens, and beating an over rated team in the texans….that’s how…didn’t you watch it? Then proceeded to get beat by 2 better teams with 2 better QB…..yes I’d take FLACO over Brady too.

  89. brazzz01 says: Sep 13, 2013 6:16 PM

  90. tedmurph says: Sep 13, 2013 6:18 PM

  91. tedmurph says: Sep 13, 2013 6:33 PM

Pats have the best record outside their division over the last 5 yrs. Ravens WR didn’t drop the ball, he was stripped. Maybe Flacco, who you can have, shouldn’t have relied on a WR that had 4 receptions in the reg season. Brady’s too smart for that. They didn’t just beat the highly regarded Texans, they smoked them, twice. Overrated Texans beat the Broncos in Denver. You can’t get beat by 2 teams in the playoffs.

Peyton Manning in last yrs playoff loss at home:
    290 yrds, 2 INT, 3 Sacks, QBR 56.4

Fox made him take a knee instead of going for the winning score in regulation.

If this were a fight, they’d stop it.

Really the. How come a couple of years ago there was a 3 game stretch when manning was playing with 1st year guy and backups due to injury and in that 3 game stretch he threw 11 int’s.

Find the last time either manning, brees, rogers, ryan, or actual elite QB’s put up numbers this bad… let alone 2 weeks in a row. It’s simple, they don’t, that’s why they’re elite.
    ————-
Last November, Drew Brees threw 5 INT’s (with 0 TD’s) against Atlanta for a QB rating of 37.6.

Gee, I had to go back all of 5 weeks of action to find an example.

  94. billsfan1 says: Sep 13, 2013 7:03 PM

as a Bills fan, I have watched Brady for years (also a Michigan fan so it goes even further back since 01), DUde is a legend, and yeah he may not be on the level he once was, but he is better than 25 other qb’s, and on par with most of the rest.

NE looks shaky this year because of BB’s arrogance in how he builds teams. To many times has he tried to build with Danny Woodhead and not Corey Dillon. Trading Welker for Amendola was a calculated risk and in honesty, Amendola will never out produce Welker but he is a bit younger and probably a bit less costly.
TOm Brady is only one of a handful of qb’s who would be 2-0 with how shaky this offense looks. Make no mistake about it as his WR’s blow so bad that Buffalo’s WR’s look vastly superior to them.

  95. patssox says: Sep 13, 2013 7:10 PM

  96. tedmurph says: Sep 13, 2013 7:19 PM

BB’s arrogance? The Pays have had record setting offenses fotr the last 6 yrs. We’ll see with Amendola, but over the next 4 yrs, which is what BB was looking at, I would be willing to bet Amendola outproduces Welker. Even this yr, we don’t know yet. When building this team, BB thought he had Hernandez coming back and knew Gronk would be available at an early pt.

Buffalo’s WR’s look vastly superior???. In gm1, Buffs 2 leading receivers were RBs. The leading WR, SJohnson, the only proven one, had 39 yrds, after chirping before the game. The Pats had 4 guys with more receiving yrds. Please.

I dread everytime he gets the ball and drops back, it could mean a touch down.

Don’t confuse the fact he is not a great runner with being a system quarterback.

I typed it on the Jets blog, I’ll type it here too.
