Rex Ryan: I never said Sanchez won the competition

Rex Ryan, Mark Sanchez AP

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez says he won the quarterback competition with Geno Smith, and only a shoulder injury prevented him from remaining the team’s starting quarterback. But the man who had final say on who won the quarterback competition didn’t see it that way.

Jets coach Rex Ryan told reporters today that he never declared Sanchez the winner.

“Well, I never said he won the competition. I didn’t say that,” Ryan said.

Ryan was asked if Sanchez’s comments run counter to the company line.

“That’s his opinion,” Ryan said. “And it’s not about a company line. Apparently if that’s what he said, that’s his opinion. Again, there is the ongoing competition if you will.”

Ryan said he still hopes Sanchez’s shoulder rehabilitation goes well enough for Sanchez to be cleared to play this year. Even if there’s no guarantee that Ryan will actually put Sanchez on the field.

    Does it really matter? Either way this team isn’t contending anytime soon. However I think Geno is more an answer than Sanchez, not a Jets fan btw.

    Rex is right on. That was my thought the first time I saw the Sanchez quote. Thanks for the confirmation Rex.

    I gotta say, I loved Rex’s post game comments last night. Especially the bit about the end of the game. “I guess we were the only ones involved.”

    Crazy thought here. But does anyone believe Rex Ryan purposely put Mark Sanchez in at garbage time to set him up for injury and pave the way for Geno Smith? I’m starting to believe this becoming more than a circus, and this is going to be a long season for the Jets.

    Can’t wait for Sanchez’s response which is bound to make things more clear. Are we in the middle of a walk in the park, or a civil war? The answer will reveal itself very soon.

    Grow a set. Your plan was obvious. You like Sanchez over Geno. After Geno had 3 picks in the preseason you wanted Sanchez in the game to prove to everyone he was better. He got injured forcing you to change your plan and now you have to start Geno.

    At least the Jaguar coaching staff had the moral fortitude to declare a clear winner in their QB competition, even though the winner was injured at the time. They had nothing to gain by making a firm commitment, other than the respect of the players on the team.

    Proof that I.Q. points drop heavily with some people when they jump onto the internet. Sanchez isn’t an elite, franchise QB. He’s average…not all that good but certainly not trash. Totally ridiculous to refer to him as “garbage”. Show some class.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    Not really. It’s fun to bash him because it is easy to do (slide school, hot dog, underage girls, booger incident, GQ spread, butt-fumble, etc.) but he has talent. He is not a thinker like Peyton. Sanchez is a reactionary QB. He makes poor decisions because he isn’t really a student of the game but that can change. Give him a decent running game and a stout defense and he is quite capable. He made some incredible plays in multiple comeback wins. He does not have the personality to lead in NYC and honestly that team is full of bombastic buffoons. Put him in Minnesota to compete with Ponder and you would see a very different Sanchez (and probably Ponder too)
  40. sweetnlow44 says: Sep 13, 2013 10:34 PM
    Smith is horrible, but they need to end the relationship with Sanchez and move on. They’ve turned into a complete joke and it’s gotta be miserable to be a fan of that dysfunctional team.
    Definition of competition in the Free Dictionary. A test of skill or ability. Henceforth, according to the definition there was no competition to begin with. Skill and ability need to be involved for said competition to take place. Get your story straight Rex. Had you said on-going comedic competition, you would have been more accurate. Mark Sanchez is hilarious. He’s got the ability and skill to make us all laugh so lets not build him up to be something he’s not.
  46. Deb says: Sep 13, 2013 10:48 PM
    Based on what Sanchez has accomplished in the last couple of seasons, I think Rex would have been wise to keep Greg McElroy around as the #2 behind Geno. Despite all the hoopla about the competition between Tebow and Sanchez last year, Greg was the guy who finally got points on the board in preseason.
  47. sschmiggles says: Sep 13, 2013 10:49 PM
    Not even close imo. Smith is no Peyton, but he’s better than Sanchez. And he isn’t a whining self centered prima donna either. At least Smith has poise and toughness.
  48. braddavery says: Sep 13, 2013 10:52 PM
    Well, in this case Rex was probably right. If he had decided Sanchez was the starter, he wouldn’t have played him during garbage time in that last preseason game risking injury.
    The bigger problem is based on the preseason performances. You gotta wonder why the heck Rex did not name Sanchez starter. Sanchez was not great, but he wasn’t as awful as Geno.
    in this day and age, doesn’t a head coach of a prominent sports team in a giant media market have a pr department that can help him prepare for such a question?
    the question coming was obvious; ‘well he said he won the competition rex, is that right?’ (from a relentless barrage of reporters’ questions, who think it actually matters for some reason). deflecting ever so slightly he says ‘i didn’t say that.’
    better answer; ‘that’s irrelevant, next’
    he’s too open and honest to handle those questions himself.
  97. 1historian says: Sep 14, 2013 8:36 AM
    Even tho Smith threw 3 picks Thursday he looked darn good for a rookie and IMO the job is his to lose. He kept his poise (unlike Brady) and he is going to get better every week.
    Sanchez should get shoulder surgery right now and next year go looking for another place to play, because IMO he’s lost the job in NY and he might do a lot better starting off somewhere else. New York is not the place for him.
  98. patriots123456 says: Sep 14, 2013 9:08 AM
All the talk and all the hype was all “smoke and mirrors”. Fact: the only team that was dumb enough to waste a high round pick on geno smith was the Jets.
